PostSubject: rear gear question for impala ss axel   Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:49 pm

So I called randys ring and pinion just a moment ago to buy a set of 4.11 gears. The cheap set is not designed for an abs reluctor and I understand that will keep my abs from working. My issue is that the salesman said that the impala and caprice speedometer is run off this same thing and if i got this set without an abs reluctor the speedometer will not work at all (he didnt mean it would need to be reprogramed... i made sure). I have never heard this before so Im guessing he has no idea what he is talking about. But I know you guys would know for sure so can anone confirm my suspicion of his lack of knowledge? Has anyone ever heard of or experienced a speedometer flat out not working at all after a gear change of any kind?

I'm with you.
The speedo works off the pcm which works with the VSS mounted on the transmission

Yup, speedo is all thru the trans and PCM.

ABS reluctor is just for the ABS, but the gear sets are different for an ABS equipped car.

There is a portion of the pinion gear that is thicker to retain the ABS reluctor.

You can use a regular gear set, without the reluctor, but you won't have any ABS, and the light will be on as soon as you roll, from lack of wheel speed input.

im fine with no abs. I will just get the light tuned out when I get the pcm programmed for the 4.11s. So v8killer your saying any gear set for the 8.5 30 spline axel will work?

Yes, as long as you have gears made for your series carrier, or just swapping the carrier intact with the ring gear already on it.

The spline's should'nt matter unless you are swapping the whole carrier (the ring gear is removeable)
