PostSubject: Redneck Engineering brings you... BODY WORK!    Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:23 pm

So my miata came with a huge dent in the passenger rear quarter. A friend of mine suggested a BRILLIANT way to try and fix it. So I tried it today. Wink And this is relevant, because you can use it on ANY car! Razz

This is what I started with:

And the day I bought it - only close-up I had!

So you ready for this? Get a basketball. And do this to it:

Have yourself one of these ready:

And then do this:

Hit it with this:

Tap outside with hammer. Deflate. Move. Repeat. Deflate. Move. Repeat. Etc, etc, etc.

Here it is in progress and after about an hour of messing around on the last one:

It actually looks better in person right now than the pics show. I don't know if it looks better than it did when I started, but it definitely looks... different. lol. It will need some filler when I'm done. But that's ok, cuz I'm going to paint it anyways....

I need to hit Modell's and get me a couple different sized balls to get into the smaller areas. And no, a kids kick-type ball won't work. They explode. Ask me how I know? "Wow Wow Wubzy" will never be the same. lol! Just don't tell my 3 year old daughter what I did to her ball!

Anyways, now I may hit Harbor Freight and get some cheap bodyworking tools. I think I'm getting the hang of it!

Oh, and I may or may not have moved the inner trunk support a bit too. Hopefully the battery will fit back in there! But at least now I can get my arm and hands up into the fender where I couldn't at first. I can just use my BFH to readjust it when I'm all done.

Stay tuned. There's more to come. Wink

Cool. Very interesting idea... It makes you wonder how the first guy came up with the idea to do it.

I think you are over thinking it though. Just drive the thing. The dent brings a, be it just a sniff, air of masculinity.

So a soccer ball should be tough enough for the next size down
After that I have no clue
Why dont you take it to the dent wizards, pay $100 & have it better then anything you'll ever do?

BTW....Whats with the bacon?

So disappointing Steve. Surprised
You save $100, and bang a dent out of a car with a basket ball and compressed air. That is why. How cool is that? cheers

Sould it matter that the ball is bigger than the car?Razz

BTW....Bacon taste good.Very Happy

I liked the dent. Sad It added character. And the way you drive it at the autocross people would have assumed you did it. pale Might cost you a ride in the V to keep me from telling Bella about wow wow wubzy. And bacon is the candy of meat, by the way.

LOL. I honestly liked that dent as you know, because it looked HILARIOUS. The appearance of it made you puzzled..."How the hell did that happen?"

But wow, that's pretty ingenious. I thought you were gonna use something like dry ice or a plunger when I saw the thread title...the only things I've ever gotten dents out with were suction cups, and that made me feel wicked smaht.

My body work guy did that with a football in a door, popped that dent right out. Never would have thought about that for a 1/4 panel though. Nice work.

Bacon is better than caviar.

Sorry. The fresh grated dirt and road cone gave it away.
