| Was poking around the wagon this weekend and took a peek at the trans dipstick, fluid is really getting due for a change. I have a new filter and gasket. I've never flushed this car before so I have a couple questions. On the pan gasket do I just use the gasket or should I put on some Ultra Black too? Also. I know the pan is about 3.5-4 quarts. But is there a specific brand of fluid I should use? No additives, that's just for the rear end correct? | |

| I always use just the gasket, no silicone. And I'm a silicone junkie (refrain from any boobie jokes please ) Swap the filter and make sure you torque down the pan bolts in INCH POUNDS.... ask me how I know Use regular Dextron III. | |

| Make sure you don't double up the o-rings on the filter neck, too. And your tranny is a 700r4, btw. | |

| Your tranny is in fact a 4L60. Or 7004R if you must. I am not sure how top secret it is, and I will be corrected if it is top secret, but use "F type" tranny fluid. It has the same modifiers, and viscosity as Dextron, but without the detergents that can damage old seals. I used it with good results on the ZR2 after talking with Al. And with the tranny cold, I filled it to half way from the cold line to the hot line. This will not hurt the tranny. Don't bother with a flush. Get a new filter. Make sure it has a rubber gasket, and not a cork. Change it as you would, and replace lost fluid with 5 quarts of F type. Drive the car making sure you go in all gears including reverse. Give it a couple days if you like. Drop the pan, and empty it. Now reinstall, and top off again with 5 fresh quarts of F type. You can use any brand fluid. Walmart or Autozone. It does not matter. I did this and was able to save a bad transmission. Some may disagree, but it worked. | |

Correct bolt torque applied in two steps plus rubber or rubberized gasket equals perfect seal WITHOUT any additional sealer. Use Transjel or something like that to hold the gasket in place during assembly if you absolutely have to.

| When using rubber gaskets all I do is coat the gasket with ATF before installing it. If you really want to get it clean you can try flushing it using the instructions on the SS forum. It's easy with a helper and gets more of the fluid out making the pan drop easier. http://www.impalassforum.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?p=2193123 | |

I'm going to give this a shot. I bought Type F... the Ford fluid? And thats safe to run in there? As it were Walmart didnt even have any Dexron anyways. - SPCS wrote:

Correct bolt torque applied in two steps plus rubber or rubberized gasket equals perfect seal WITHOUT any additional sealer. Use Transjel or something like that to hold the gasket in place during assembly if you absolutely have to. Yes, I learned that one when I did a flush on my '95 Grand Am. Gasket blew out after a month I was also taught to go every other bolt when putting the pan back up. Torque them about 70% then go around and do them to spec.

| Another thing to watch out for. Lay a straight edge across your trans pan gasket surface, after you've gotten it nice and clean. A previous installer may have over-torqued the attachment bolts and caused the area around the bolt hole/s in the sheet metal pan to go "out of flat", it will look like a low-profile "volcano". This occurrs due to the relatively high compressibility of the gasket. So, to correct this condition; I lay the pan across a flat block of wood, locate a ball-peen hammer (round-end) into the raised-up bolt hole, then carefully tap down with a heavier mallet to get the "volcano" to lay-down & disappear. You can verify a good straightening job by laying the pan across a piece of plate glass to make sure there are no offending air gaps. Sometimes the hole will end up tilted over, I use a long tapered drift gently bottomed out in the hole, then I can re-tilt the hole back straight. Details, details, details, the devils abode! Use patience and the pan won't leak. Everybody has their own preferences on what gasket and/or sealant to apply. The important thing is checking for geometric flatness, achieving mating surface cleanliness and employing proper fastener torquing procedures. | |
