PostSubject: Dogs are truly man's best friend   Dogs are truly man's best friend EmptyTue Apr 21, 2009 12:02 pm

I often look into my dog's eyes and wonder what they are thinking. Max, my short haired Jack Russel has been with me for ten years and two marriages. He has been there through the good times and the bad. Jake has been with us now since December or so. He is a wire hair Jack Russel and pound for pound, one of the strongest dogs I have ever seen. Both are like little children, and Phyllis and myself just love them to death. We can go out for the day, or a couple seconds. Either way they are glad to have us home. They are the smartest dogs, and they show it. Being out of work, I have gotten a chance to spend some extra time with the little guys, and enjoy my time with them.

Post pics and a story of your pets or pets you have had in the past.

Here is a few of the boys.

Oh no, an entire thread about how smart your dogs are Rolling Eyes. I will admit that they are very friendly when company comes over. I should post pics of Laura's cat fetching his squirrel toy so you can see a real dog in action Laughing

Well I have no access to photobucket anymore so I have no idea what pics of my dog these are, somehow my ISP here in the desert feels that photobucket is some sort of pornographic site and they blocked it.

I lifted these pics from another post on another forum so I know they are of my Jack Russel.

My dog is amazing, she recognizes me on the webcam and welcomes me home every time I am away from the house. On longer trips such as this she will be glued to my side for about two days even sleeping with me. Usually she sleeps with us anyway but when I am gone she is even more affectionate. She seems to realize how good she has it in our house, being a rescue dog that was tied up outside for about 2 years before we got her seems to have shown her both sides of human treatment. I would love to keep her around forever as she is truly the perfect dog, (Bill knows what I am talking about) I have never seen a dog that is so loyal, smart, resourceful, protective, the list goes on as to her attributes. She is loved, cared for, and protected just like my child.

She is truely a beautiful dog Ray. I have seen pics of her before. Both of mine were rescued as well, so to speak. Max's original owners got a divorce, and nither one could take care of him correctly, so they opted to give him up for his own good. Jake's family moved into an apartment and could not take him. Both have always had the good life.

About a week ago, my wife's nephew came home from wrestling match in New Jersey, and was showing my wife a move he put on one of his opponents. He grabbed her around the neck, and both jake and max, (who had been laying on the couch) came running into the kitchen barking and biting, and they both got their licks in until he let go of her neck. They are very protective along with being loving. He did not get mad, and understood. He even gave them a treat for protecting his aunt.

PostSubject: Re: Dogs are truly man's best friend   Dogs are truly man's best friend EmptyTue Apr 21, 2009 3:30 pm

Growing up I always wanted a dog; more than anything else. My dad would never let us have anything more than a hamster though. He would say, "we don't have the yard for a dog, yada yada." Those of you who have seen my yard know that's BS... but nonetheless he just wouldn't have it.

I moved to Colorado after high school and got to live with my brothers dog and it was awesome. One weekend we wen't camping in North Dakota. All of a sudden this dog popped out of the woods with a bird in it's mouth. It was the coolest looking dog I'd ever seen.

Well that dog didn't leave our camp. What's more, the following morning he followed us as we hiked out of the woods.

As we got in the car and drove away, he ran down the road after us. I couldn't stand it anymore. We stopped the car, picked her up, and brought her with us back to Colorado.

We named her Lollygagher.

Dogs are truly man's best friend 469442027_l

She was barely over thirty pounds when we found her. I took her to get shots, got her fixed, and started feeding her good food. She put on another 15 pounds and then stayed pretty constant at around 45lbs. That's the weight you see her in that pic, so you can imagine how famished she was when we found her.

Dogs are truly man's best friend 469442432_l-1

That dog became so loyal; you could tell she knew we saved her. She was a lone spirit though. It took a while for her to learn to get along with my brothers dog. Interestingly though, she got along great with the kittens. Although, she probably would have eaten them had I not kept her fed. It was funny though, you couldn't get near that dog while she was eating, or playing with a bone, or she would flip out and growl. Can't really blame her though. God knows how long she lived in the wild.

This is her with with my brothers dog.

Dogs are truly man's best friend 469441658_l]

Well, when I moved back home my father refused to let me bring the dog. So I left her with my brother. Not two weeks had gone by before my brother called and told me that she had been hit by a car and they had to put her to sleep. I was so devastated.

About a year later, my brother moved back home too. Guess what? My dad let him bring his dog. Not long after that, my brother decided to move to Malaysia. He left the dog with my mother, and my dad has finally learned to love having a dog in his life.

It doesn't hurt that Kehla is one of the most well behaved dogs I've ever seen.

Dogs are truly man's best friend IMG_0377-1

I live on a main road in a relatively large town. Kehla never wears a leash. When we go for walks she just glues herself to my side. She won't cross a street, or even step into a street, without my permission. She won't jump in a car, jump on a person, or even go through a doorway into or out of a house, without my permission. We leave a big bowl of food out, and she portions it herself. She never goes bathroom inside, never barks unless someone knocks on the door, and never runs away even though we leave her outside in an unfenced yard for hours at a time. Even if she runs full speed after a squirrel, all I need to do I yell her name and she'll stop dead in her tracks.

Sorry for the long post.

This is Sasha she is seven year old Old English Mastiff, Yes she does drool, only when your eating in front of her and after she drinks water, but shes great. Mastiffs are not very active, i have to force to go on walks, and she knows comfort.
She weights 165lb, I have her on a diet. She is great with kids, my 3 and 5 year olds are always jumping on her.

PostSubject: Jake's story!   Dogs are truly man's best friend EmptyTue Apr 21, 2009 9:26 pm

Several months ago we had to put our dog Maggie down, as we had her operated on 4 times for cancer and it wasn't going to get better. That was not an easy day. I've reached a point in my life, newly retired, our last daughter, Julie was off to UNH to study engineering, nothing to stop me from doing what I want, so to speak. We always had dogs but I just didn't think it was the right time for me to get another. Julie and my wife Diane felt differently.

One day while reading the newspaper I saw a picture of "Bruce" at the local shelter. I said to myself, that is a good looking dog, about 2 years old. So I decided to go look at him. I could tell he had a good disposition and would make someone a good pet; but he was big. In the next week my wife and daughter looked at him. They both liked him. I was still not convinced. After several weeks of "pressure" I called the shelter and asked if he was still there, they said he was. I told them to give him a bath and wrap him up and I'll be down to get him.

The first thing I did was change his name to Jake as Bruce is not a name for a Boxer. I couldn't believe how happy he was on the ride home. He follows me all day long and cries like a baby if he is not with me. I'm glad I got him, he is a great companion. Funny thing after a few days at the house, you would have thought he lived there his whole life.

You don't know what they understand, but I do know that he was thankful the day I brough him home and out of the cage he was in at the shelter. Now he spreads out on the whole couch and not too happy when someone else tries to sit down.

As I said he follows me around all day long, one day I was getting the riot act read to me for something I did or did not do by the Mrs., well ole Jake didn't like that. He didn't growl but he barked at her. He got an extra biscuit that day from me.

Thats a great story, I don't know what i would do with out a dog. I have always had a dog, my mastiff is seven now and my wife and i have been thinking about getting another.

It's her turn to pick what kind of dog, she has grown up with german shepards all her life. She's not sure what to get. Mastiffs don't live to long, i believe their life expectancy is 8 to 10 years. Mastiffs and shepards are like night and day, My wife is thinking about a cane corso/mastiff mix it's called a Giant Maso. The maso is more active than a mastiff. The mastif is a VERY VERY LAZY DOG.... She's like a huge teddy bear...

For a dog with such a reputation for being super hyperactive they seem to lay around the house a lot, at least my JRT does. We often refer to Sadie as the cat dog, I think she will give a cat it's run for the money when it comes to napping through out the day and finding sun spots to sleep in too.

They sleep alot, but they play alot. Both can stay with or out run the cat. Max (the short hair, older one) can al least keep up. He once ran down a rabbit. Jake (the younger one) can out run the cat, and winds up flying past, over or into the cat while chasing her.
They both think it is nap time if my wife sits down. We also call Max "CAT DOG". Of course we use the Batman theme when we do it. Rolling Eyes

Well Sadie has shown a rooster it's demise and she was better at eliminating rodents at the farm then all the cats put together in the past, so she is no slouch when it comes to speed or agility when it is needed. Of course she is retired from all of that now so I guess she is using her retirement to the fullest of her capabilities, can't say that I blame her. I would sleep whenever I felt like it and follow my wife around the house all day and everyday if I could too.

Dogs are truly man's best friend S6300017

in 2004 we decided that our oldest daughter could have a pet. for most
kids any pet will do, a dog, cat, fish, bird, but not our daughter it
was to be a pug or nothing,I started searching for one and then
realized how expensive they were, so I placed an ad in the uncle
henrys, saying that my daughter really wanted a pug, but we had little
money and were looking for an inexpensive one.
we recieved a call from a lady in Alton new hampshire, she said she would
like to talk to my daughter and see if the ad was for real. when my
daughter was on the phone i realized she started to cry, then she
started saying thank you, this kind person had talked to her husband
before she called and decided to make my daughters dream come true.
she then mailed my daughter photos of all the puppies and let her pick
the one she wanted. then she sent photos to us weekly and also sent
her books and magazines about pugs, and also the milo and otis movie.
then the day came to go get him. we visited them and the puppies
parents, and then came the time to leave, she gave my daughter her
puppy and a crate to bring him home in, my daughter gave the money she
had saved which was less than $100. when they were in the car she
secretly gave me back the money and asked me to use it for dog things
for his new home. she then told me that their daughter had died in a
fire a few months before, her daughter loved pugs too and the pugs they had were her
dogs. she had a dream to become a vet someday. These people had just
lost their daughter and they were making my daughters dream come true.
I will never forget these people for their kindness and the gift they
gave us.

Signal,

I have a daughter and while Sadie is not "hers" she is the primary care taker for the dog for the most part, she also wants to be a vet and has a deep compassion towards all animals so your story was tugging at my heart strings just a little. I know you and your family will find another Pug and while it will not be Hemi it will be special in it's own way.
