Fuel pump issues Empty
PostSubject: Fuel pump issues   Fuel pump issues EmptyMon Apr 16, 2012 11:22 pm

My Caprice has been having fuel delivery issues. I can turn a wrench and I'm pretty handy under the hood, BUT, diagnostics are not my strong suit and I'd appreciate a little help from you guys.

Here are the symptoms.

- 99.9% of the time I get no self prime from the pump
- after sitting a while the car will fire up
- if I shut it off, sometimes it won't fire up again
- sometimes motor stumbles with opening the throttle, in park

Facts

- fuel in the tank
- pump runs using test lead
- pump is brand new, just installed yesterday
- trunk ground, and coil grounds are good
- swapped PCM with known good and no change
- swapped FP relay with known good and no change
- FP fuse is good

Possibilities

- fuel pump wiring
- oil pressure switch no good (guage pins when running, wiring diagram suggests the two are somehow linked)

What do you guys think?

Have you checked the pressure yet? Did you replace the hose from the pump to the top of the sending unit? Those things are known to crack.

Have not checked pressure yet. There is pressure at the valve in back of fuel rail.

When the car does run, the fuel pump stays on and it runs fine.

I know nothing of the link to the oil pressure switch.
But i do know that when i refurbed my fuel system. = New pump and good used sending unit , I tried to reuse old wirng and when installied it looked fine .But ended up with starting issues.
New harness and it starts and runs fine now.

I did replace that hose and clamped it in place Dave. Thanks Mark. I just might get a new sending unit and upgraded harnesses.

If your sending unit isn't too rusty etc .I'd reuse it .They're awfully expensive.
I got lucky and found one from an SS with 10.000 miles that was being scrapped .
Wirng harness is pretty cheap.Just make sure the connections are tight .

It is a bit rusty. But, it works. I found this topic on ISSF about rebuilding your sending unit. Might give it a shot.

Yea that's a nice writeup.
I love the part about using Ketchup to remove corrision .LOL
I'm pretty sure my problem was the bulkhead connection.

Start with soldering the connections as in that write up and see if that helps. Is it a delco pump?
