That was a great article, Brian! Looks like you guys had fun! If I hadn't had a Christening to go to, I definitely would have come up and hung out!

Once the Caprice project is done, I am going to turn my guns on the wrecker. I think it would be boss with a little 4-53t in it.

On Monday, I am taking Buford to the chassis dyno. Want to see what kind of snot the thing is actually making. Results forthcoming!

That will be a pretty shocking number, even on a dyno jet dyno. That would mean, in theory that the q-jet equipped engine was making 270+ hp!

Not saying you are wrong, but that would be a jaw dropping number.

Ok, I'll guess too Very Happy

I say 142 to the wheels (about 180-185 at the crank)

I think with 270 crank HP Buford would be in the 14's Wink

But.... For a 4000 lb car to run a 15.9 at 90mph, it'd have to be making that kind of power. Ridiculous as it may seem, physics is physics... Wink

Yeah, it sure was interesting!

If you guys have not seen the full write up (with dyno graphs!) here it is...

http://bangshift.com/blog/project-buford-t-justice-hits-the-dyno-and-goes-kablooey-carnage-inside.html

-------

On another note, when I take this car apart, does anyone want sway bars, springs, etc? The stuff is all ancient, but if you want 9C1 stuff, it is yours for free. Also, not sure if anyone wants it or not but the car has dual exhaust on it from the manifolds back. One of the mufflers got taco'd by the driveshaft but the lead pipes from the exhaust manifolds to the mufflers could be helpful to anyone looking to put duals on their car. The system is bent so both pipes come through the hump on the passenger side and then spread back out again. I am sure the studs are going to snap off they will probably get cut off, so you'd need to do some welding to really use them. If anyone wants, they are freebies once I get them off the car.

I am going to be keeping most of the stuff on the motor aside from exhaust manifolds and other small bits. Accessory drive and other major parts are not leaving my icy junk-lovin' grip!

Hey I'll take the sway bars! bounce

The exhaust isn't something I'd need that much though. Save anything that doesn't look too broken and you don't want and you can treat my trunk like a dumpster when I go home Smile

EDIT: I also just read the article...HOLY CRAP! That must have been shocking to see. Very good thing no one was hurt, especially Travis inside the car! That's nuts!

Guys, does anyone know of any driveshafts that internchange with an '87 four door?

In order to keep the car rolling for the time being, I am jamming a trans into it. If I cannot find an '87 four door drive shaft, is there anyone else out there that fits?

Does anyone have an extra one or a shaft that they are selling?

Thanks!

I have one you can grab, but I don't think I can get it out yet as I don't want tranny fluid leaking all over the yard I have it stored at. Dogs and cats may think it looks yummy.

BUT Any two door or four door box drive shaft should work. They are both the same exact wheelbase so that 84 at Everett's would have a shaft you can use.

Thanks for the tip off 84! You guys are life savers, for sure! The torque converter, gasket, and filter are supposed to arrive tomorrow. Going to swap that stuff on to the new trans and then start prepping the blowed up unit for removal.

Oh, and all these boxes arrived yesterday. Anyone heard of this company before? Arrow

I love the Hotckis suspension in these cars. I had the springs and bars in my 96 Fleetwood, 95 Impala SS and my Roadie has the Vogtland springs, which are the same as the Hotchkis...

Anyways... Rockin! I love that stuff! Very Happy

Excellent! Anytime is a good time for upgrades! I havnt tried hotchkis products yet. I've used eibach, wasn't pleased, and suspension techniques, not bad. Aside from 9c1 springs, I havnt found anything comfy. I've got z28 springs to put in as boojum has recently done to his new SS. Can't wait to see more of this beast of a box to unfold!

Thanks guys!

What's cool is that the project has gotten a bunch of attention and the stuff I am posting on BangShift is getting great traffic. I really think that these cars are among the next "thing" that will happen in the hobby.

84 - like I said before, anything you want off this car, you can have. I am planning on installing this stuff in about two weeks, so you can then have the bars and springs from my car if you want them. The good news is that I will honestly report on how well this stuff works or not so you know if it is a good direction to go in.

I am excited to get the suspension wheels and tires on the car. It should look gnarly all hunkered down, especially with the new meats on the corners.

I like how that sounds! I'd like to know when you're going to really thrash on the car ahead of time so I can make a plan to get out there and watch it all happen if possible. Obviously the build interests me a lot! I would love all of the stuff you discard lol! And, yes, I would like to know what you think of the Hotchkiss stuff from a drivers perspective.

If I get my frame at home before the next two weeks and you still need a drive shaft I will gladly donate it to this project! Like I said, I can't have tranny fluid all over someone else's yard Embarassed

Be advised: A 9C1 with an 8.5" rear axle requires a shorter driveshaft than a civilian 7.5" or 7 5/8" ring geared car.
This is due to the larger diameter ring gear placing the longer pinion and yoke further away from the rear axle centerline.

I would convert to Spicer 1350 style U-joints now, on both the pinion and trans yokes BEFORE installing the big block.
The later 8.5" has a stronger 30 vs. the earlier 28 splines in your axle shaft/side gear fitment.
Going only by my rapidly fading memory, the axle spline upgrade was implemented around 1988-89.

Don't forget to install a quality safety loop, the one from Clear Image (C.I.A.-Dan) is a good value for your needs.

Hey guys, been way too long since I stopped in. Sorry 'bout that!

Since I last dropped by, I stuck a new (used) transmission in the car to get it up and running again, popped a junkyard d-shaft in, and was beating around in it with the kids. I finally got all the suspension parts and pieces, wheels, etc, in and have been getting after it over the last few days. It is a bear of a job in the driveway on your back but I am happy with the progress thus far. I should be finishing up the rear suspension tomorrow, and moving to the front soon thereafter. It has been a long time since I last blew apart a crusty 1980s GM product and it sucks about as bad as I remember it sucking before. HA!

Once I am done with the front suspension, I'll have the following parts that anyone here can have as freebies -

Oil cooler adapter and lines (the cooling unit itself rusted on this car so it is no good. The lines and stuff are good.
Rear sway bar (bolts sheared off when removing so you'll need new hardware)
Front sway bar (end links are shot to pieces)
Upper and lower rear control arms (not sure why anyone would want them, but they are yours!)
Front springs
Rear Springs
2 15" steel 5x5 wheels (I am keeping two for drag slicks)

Once the small block comes out, I will have another list of stuff. Smile

I am super excited to see and feel the differences when all of the new suspension parts are on the car. The wheels will be Cragar Soft 8s (17x9) and the tires are brand new pieces to the market. Mickey Thompson is coming out with an ultra high performance tire called the Street Comp and they are hitting shelves in September. MT is sending a set along in the next week or two. I am really interested in putting these tires through the paces on an auto-x.

l've been watching the progress unfold with the basement transmission and such, can't wait for the real crazy stuff to happen here...

Someone might want those control arms to run the stock rear bar, they'll have the mounting holes fore the brackets in them and whatnot.

Hey guys,

Progress is being made. Rear suspension is in and done, front of car is blown apart now. The steering (inner/outer tie rods) were totally shot to pieces. One of the front shocks came out of the car in two pieces, the driver's side front spring was broken and has been for some time by the looks of it, and the ball joints were all junk as well. Let's not even talk of the control arm bushings...egads!

Hopefully tomorrow I will have the new lower ball joints pressed in, the new control arm bushings pressed in, and get to putting the car back together. I am aiming to have it done before the tires show up so I can get them mounted and on the car asap.

Here's a quick photo of the rear. The big sway bar is pretty cool looking...in my opinion anyway.

Funny, I was just wondering the other day about you. Smile

Glad you're making progress! And nice of you to offer up the stuff you're pulling off. Way to go, man!

It's gonna look killer dropped on the Soft 8's! Very Happy

Is it odd to have found both front springs on this thing to be broken in the exact same place when I pulled them out? Seems weird to me and probably an indication that this thing took its lumps during the days it served the PA state police. Both springs were broken half way up the bottom coil in the lower control arm. They have been broken for some time as the areas where the breaks are show lots of rust and junk in them.

It was kind of shocking to see just how shot the front end of the car was as it really didn't drive all that bad. The ball joints are all floppy and I the inner and outer tie rods were on the verge of falling apart. Embarassed

My progress was stuffed today when I disassembled the control arms and found that the cross shafts are not suitable for reuse. The surfaces where the bushings ride on both ends of both shafts are too gnarled and crappy to justify reusing. I don't want to put nice new parts on crap. I ordered a set of the Moog offset cross shafts from Advance auto, so I have until Tuesday to get my lower ball joints installed, the lower bushings pressed in, and some degreasing work done under the front of the car. I was hoping to have it tied up today but no such luck. I'll be at the drag strip all weekend announcing, so that's that until next week!

Glad to see you are chippin' away on the Boxy project.

Looks like the car is still fun to tool around in and with the proposed changes, should be kick ass!

Did the effing Hulk own this car at one point? If so did he try to change the rear shocks and realized how much it sucks? Because by that picture that's what it looks like!

Long time no post, fellas!

Whole suspension is on the car. Waiting on the tires to show up, but even on the junk rubber HOLY HELL is is awesome to drive. Corners very flat and it desperately needs the good tires, which should be here in a week or so. I'll get it lined up with the new tires on it. Have truck center caps, sourced the right lug nuts and lug nut covers, so I'm ready to go when the Mickeys show up.

The installation of the rat motor in the car is delayed, so I have cooked up a story idea for BangShift which should be entertaining and pretty informative at the same time. Also, if any of you dudes would like to be a part of the fun, the more the merrier. (Some backstory) I have been working at, racing at, and generally being a part of New England Dragway for about 16 of my 32 years. It is my second home. Saying that, I'll roll on.

Basically, the story is going to be an engine upgrade feature using the currently tired 350 that resides in the car. I am going to install an MSD ignition (dist, box, coil, and wires), a Holley 650 carb, a Weiand street warrior intake, Flowtech headers, and a Comp Thumpr cam (along with new springs, valve seals, etc). The twist? This will all be done in the pits at new england dragway starting on Friday night and ending on Sunday afternoon. We'll make runs after every upgrade to see what the performance gain was and the move onto the next one. The second twist? I'll be sleeping in the car and am trying to do this without ever actually leaving the grounds of the drag strip until I leave for home on Sunday afternoon. Sure, it sounds like the worst idea ever, but man, it will make a hella cool story.

The plan is to do this at some point in October. I'll keep you guys posted so if you want to come up and be a part of this idiocy, yell insults, or simply mock me in public, you'll be able to.

That sounds awesome! Definitely keep us posted!

On a side note, did I see pics of your dyno mishap in Hot Rod or Car Craft? I forget which mag I was looking at, but the pics and story certainly looked like yours!

Bill, yeah that was my blowed up junk. I texted Freiburger when it happened and he told me to zip something up for the "Breaking News" section the redesigned mag now has. I have been writing a bunch of stuff for them that will be coming out over the next few issues. The issue in January has a mondo feature that I'll keep you posted on.

Love that car Arrow

DF still has the F-Bomb and they have been working on it. Fuel system issues plagued the car the few times it hit the strip. Believe it or not, I have driven the F-Bomb. In the June 2008 Issue of Hot Rod, there was a story called "Road Thrash" and in it, there were 7 very different cars all taken on a road trip. I was part of that trip and got to drive them all, F-Bomb included. The waste gate knobs were cranked down so it was making about 900 of the 1500hp it could make at full tilt, but it was still a hoot to drive...and then some. It laid lots of rubber at 80mph on the highway when the pedal was laid flat. You can google search the story and find a bunch of You Tube videos on it. I am the guy in the Green Red Sox hat. If you have the issue, I was driving the lead car in the cover photo. It was the best day at work ever. Smile

The inside baseball of that story is:

A: The Charger with the Hemi ran pretty bad all day because at anything but full throttle the carbs were loading up a ton.

B: The Torino was crappy to drive because the floors had been raised up and the pedals were hinged at the bottom making it an ergonomic nightmare.

C: The Flashback Mustang hauled lots of ass but had a clutch pedal that picked up very high and that was super difficult for guys to figure out

D: An unnamed journalist nearly ripped the oil pan off the F-Bomb by running over train tracks at like 100mph

E: The hot rod you see in the video with the Wayne cross flow head on it was scary as all hell to drive. It has a straight front axle and suicide spring. It hunted all over the place. I drove it for like 50 miles on the highway and was white knuckled the whole time. Death was pretty close in that car.

F: It is late and I gotta sleep, but there are lots more good stories about that day. Smile

In this photo I am in the GTO

In this photo I am in the Mustang

In this photo I am peeing my pants doing a burnout in the Flashback Mustang. (Randy Lorentzen shot this and it ran in the mag)

The more I am thinking about this, I just wanted to say that I'm not trying to "big time" anyone or come off as the coolest guy in school. The "I did this" stuff was probably over the top and I just didn't want to it seem like I'm a dink walking around with my chest puffed out. Sorry if my last post came off that way as it was not my intention.

Whatever, dink. Razz

*jealous*

Seriously though, way cool. That sounds like it was a lot of fun! It would be awesome to hear the inside stories of the hilarity that never made it into the mags... Wink
