Since I had the rear wheels off the OCC to clean and paint stuff, I went looking for a frame stamp and this I what I found.

The "area 51" stamp Laughing

On outer side of both rear frame rails behind centerline of rear axle.

No, sorry, wrong again. That is not a marking of any kind.

What you need is this:

It unlocks the Wagon-go-fast-mode. OCC only. That's why.

Its not the go fast mod....its the sport handling mode.

Problem is, they're all shipped in comfy couch mode & then the mechanism rusts solid....stuck forever.

I hauled cars when i was younger 3 car truck 6car trailer with stinger 5th wheel,.
there were different tie down hooks all one ring,

It could also be a spot where the assembly train was hooked into,. to carry it on the assembly line,.

I can see that line of thinking, Nick... But why would all these marking be in the same spot, but different if it were just a tool attachment spot? And these markings are too small for tow hook spots.

Yeah. I can't imagine GM taking the time to stamp each car with a different, unique marking if it's just for a tow strap.

Well they do punch holes in the frames for tow hooks for transport, and the holes do look remarkably like the one pictured. My best guess anyway,.especially from the description where it is, back of centrelin rear axle ,. perhaps scps wasn't looking in the exact same spot,.

I,m not sure where the "unique" part comes from,

Nick

Because each car has different markings in that location. Some dont even have a stamp at all.

Start about 3/4 down on page 2, goes to page 3

The frame stamps vary between 9C1, civi sedans, wagons, and Taxis.

Im jumping in late ..... but nick is right....... the holes are not always in the same spot either. They are not for towing, but for strapping the vehicles down in the train cars during shipping. They bounce and roll less if you pull down by the pillars vs the bumpers or axles.

.... Thats what Ive been told from doing new vehicle check ins..... and towing cars the past few months I noticed this. Every car beside VW products have some holes in the frame for tie'ing down wit the T hooks Nick posted, or J hook if its a smaller hole. .......

Some cars don't even have holes, that's what I think is causing the discussion

Also, my VW has tie down holes, one behind the left air dam, and a tie down loop on the right rear lower bumper. Wink

Thanks for the link,. interesting read,. but the marks discussed were not the same spot i think,.

I wonder if the marks in the other thread might have been so assmbly workers knew what suspension'rear end combinations had to go with which frame,.i.e drum brakes soft springs shocks etc,, disc brakes hard springs firm shocks?

I,ve had 4 1a2 wagons and when i had the frame off one i scrapped, the springs, shocks, and rearend were all the same as a civvie as far as i could tell,.when i pull my wagons out of the trailer in a week or so,. it,s definitely something i will be interested in checking, as long as i can get a good pic and reference point to where i should be looking,.

In the parts manual for 94-96 there are

6 front springs listed for Civis (53 N/M)
7 front springs listed for Civis (77 N/M)
4 front springs listed for 9C1 (?? N/M) different part numbers from the civis
5 front springs listed for wagons (77 N/M) which are the same part numbers as the civi 77 N/M

If the frames are stamped for suspension types it's still not enough to know which springs to use, maybe only the spring rate group.

I think we need to see a non-B4U stamp.

Triangles for B4U and SS (77)
Crosses for 9C1 (??)
UFOs for wagons (77)
??? for non-B4U (53)

P.S. There are three sets of rear spring numbers; sedan18 N/M, sedan 27 N/M and wagon 37 M/N. No mention of 9C1but RPO on SPIDs I found online put them in the 27 N/M group.

Triangles on SS and Non-B4U civilians (91-93), European Export cars (91-93)
Crosses on 9C1 (94-96)
NO Markings on Chevy Wagons, both civilian and 1A2 (91-93)
UFOs on OCCS

is what I come up with.

Haven't had time to check the 9C6.

1A2 Suspension is more or less a civilian setup, coded F40 (as opposed to the 9C1's 7B3), at least on my car.

According to the Compnine VIN breakdown of my '93 wagon, out of the 10,546 wagons that year, every single one has the F40 RPO code.

"F40 SUSPENSION,HEAVY DUTY,FRONT AND REAR HVY DUTY SUSP(F40) 10,546"

Got the SS to blame for that, I guess. Which reminds me - we haven't seen any LTZ frame stamps yet.
