| I was driving along East St. in Tewksbury today when I hit a rather large canyon in the road, sort of near where Demoulas and RimPro are. Long story short, guy I work with was driving behind me a few minutes later and informed me that my exhaust system was dangling about 1" from the pavement... The tailpipe and resonator apparently were rusted at the muffler, which I found weird since when I got this car, the muffler and everything behind it looked kinda new. Anyway, I figure this is as good enough of a reason to do something "cool" with the exhaust on this car. I think I can drive it for now the way it is, it's not super loud because the muffler is still there. Is there a bolt on catback SI/DO system out there for the TBI cars? I don't want anything crazy, just one muffler, two tailpipes, sounds good, nice tone, not droning or nauseating/police attracting, you know? My car has the one metal heat shield going around the poly gas tank. Do I need to get the driver's side one off of a LT1 car or something? If so does anyone have one they could bring to the meet? I kind of want to do the thing as soon as possible, so I'm wondering if I can get away with just putting the shield on later if at all possible. I'm thinking of just taking it to an exhaust shop maybe Crovo's guy in NH or if I don't have time I may at least get a price from Lou's. They are right up the street from me (the "good" one). Someone I know just got something done there kind of cheap, and my dad got one done too, catback duals on my old truck, looks good. I'm just not a fan of them is all. I'm also split on exit location. I may do angle cut tips out behind the rear wheels on the diagonal, so I don't have to worry about tailpipes scraping on the ground pulling out of driveways, especially if I ever lower the car. | |

| I'm going to thread jack only because my car is in the same boat. I think one good pothole from becoming a pile of scrap metal on the street As for the heat shields, i'm not sure if sedans are the same, but the wagons have one on the passenger side and one on the front of the gas tank. I have an extra passenger side one if you'd like it. | |

| My car has one shield, (it's a little loose actually, don't know if it's supposed to be like that), for the pass side only. I remember seeing someone's car, probs Doug's LSX car, with two shields and was like "Oh...uh...I don't have that..." If I could get away with the exhaust not melting the tank I'd get the exhaust done first and take this car to the meet in March, then try to get a shield and put it on at my convenience, you know? After a quick look, I don't see any sort of bolt-on catback for non-LT1ish cars... | |

| Vatozone sells each individual exhaust component, including bends for the TBI's. if you have access to a welder, you could always go that route | |

| Only LT1 cars had the dual heat sheilds. The heat sheilds are only for preventing explosions during collisions; you wont melt the gas tank in day to day driving.
There was info on the old forum about the optimal way to do single exhaust on a TBI.
Basically you want a 9C1 Y-Pipe, and then run 3" pipes all the way back. I believe there is some specific Walker part numbers that will bolt right up. You can also get the 9C1 Y-Pipe and then just get a custom shop to do it. Whatever muffler you choose will make the biggest difference in terms of sound...

| I was hoping to just leave the 305's Y-pipe and the cat that's on there, I don't know the condition of the cat where the exhaust connects to it though... What is diff. about the 9c1 y-pipe? Is it a bigger diameter? | |

| Not sure about TBI 9C1's, but the LT1 9C1 is true duals. Also, I dont think the heat shield really matters. My L99 came with single exhaust, and when it rusted in half, I replaced it with a stock true duals setup from an SS I had in the basement. Its been on there for almost 2 years now, no difference from not having a heat shield. Tho, I did have to make hangers cuz they weren't there as it was a single exhaust car. | |

| Hearing about the hangers and stuff makes me want to just have a shop fab one up for me, SI/DO style. I kinda feel that would be the cheapest route, I want to say Lou's charged my dad 300-350 for 3" pipe from cat, SI/DO (prob house brand, don't know what it is but it sounds good like a Flowmaster 50), and 2 tailpipes with stainless angle cut and rolled end tips. I actually still have the old stainless roll cut tips from the truck, just remembered that! | |

| Its a little bit of coin to have a shop due it, but they "usually" know what they are doing as its their specialty. When I do exhaust, I'm definitely going to bring it to a shop. There's no shame in that. | |

| I'll stop at Lou's tomorrow after work and do some recon. I know what not to let anyone do now, like in 05 when they kept my old cat converter. I think my car's cat is still good though. The system they just did on my old truck for my father looks nice. I really would like to have this done by the meet next month, so I can clean up the car and bring that. I'll take the '74 to the next event, I still need the hood removed and welded and a couple other things like the sound system installed somehow. | |

| TBI 9C1 has the 3" Y-Pipe. No other TBI cars had that. It's the main restriction so the 3" single pipe wouldn't help much without replacing the Y pipe.
As far as true duals, just remember that regardless of whether you use an Imp SS exhaust or a custom job, you'll need to notch or replace the crossmember.

| Yeah, I knew about the crossmember, I'm really not looking to get into the car that much at this time...just figured that since the exhaust needs attention, I might as well do something non-stock in place of what fell off, you know? Will the 9c1 y-pipe bolt exactly in place of the stock one so it could be done some other time? I'm figuring that if I did that, I'd have to replace the cat as well and then it would turn into a whole 500 dollar exhaust system which I'm definitely not doing, lol... | |

| After some browsing, I may actually look into that crossover pipe and a cat...but if I were to use Lou's they seem like the kind of place that won't let you bring parts to them. We'll see. | |

| i just removed the exhaust off the 91. 9c1 y pipe, 3" magnaflow cat, 3" intermediate pipe, summit welded race muffler, dumped before the axle. i also have all the hangers. and good manifold donuts. 9c1 pipe is direct bolt on. all the peices where bought new 4 years ago. i painted it all with hi temp paint, so it still looks good.
if your interested make an offer. i can take some pics if your interested.

| yea lous is terrible back when i was in school my mom decided to surprise me and have duels put on my s10 blazer long story short she spent $500 and they didnt even replace the cat that was clogged and included a "new" one in the price but they just rammed a screw driver or some shit through it.i was pumped when i first saw it then about 2 weeks later it already had an exhaust leak so i grabbed the paper work and almost shit myself.i only paid 450 for the damn blazer. I ended up gettin the money for the "new" cat back but over all was a bad experience. what are you lookin to do/spend in the long run? my friends boss lets him do side jobs outta the Meineke he works at after hours he just did from the manifolds back duel exhaust on one of our friends 93 roadmasters im not possitive but im pretty sure he only paid like 230-50 to have it bent up and welded in only this was he supplied his own mufflers ill give him a call and check it out. he does basicly anything for dirt cheap my last camaro he did all 4 ball joints for $200 and was done in a couple hours.i just didnt want to do them at the time | |

| So my dad told me he paid 400 bucks for the exhaust on the Blazer, F- Lou's, lol. The muffler they used has only been on there a couple of months and already looks like the Titanic. The Caprice has a book value of like 2 grand, if I have that kind of money to be spending it's going to the truck or the Impala! lol
I would like some tailpipes going out the back somewhere and a muffler that's not super loud, because I just can't handle constant drone of any kind, especially since the muffler will be under the back floor of the pass. compartment, I WILL puke for sure.
Last night I had to get the loose part of the exh. out by breaking out the Sawzall so I could get the resonator out and some of the tailpipe, then snake the piece that goes up over the axle to the muffler back down underneath from the muffler area. It's very odd because the resonator is excellent, and the intermediate pipe looks new, it's still shiny! The tailpipe was even good except for the part that rusted up where it curves into the muffler.
I may just buy a new stock tailpipe/muffler and try to get the resonator off the old one, might be the cheapest way out. Or just drive it with no tailpipe!
Anthony PM sent on your exhaust there

| Matt, if the stock setup from the box will work you can have it for ten bucks. It was throaty when I was getting on it lol. Almost all cat back is new stock style pipes. Cats junk though lol. | |

| Ahh haha, we'll see. I just have NOOOO IDEA what I am going to do about this yet.
I wanted to show up to the meet with the Caprice and be like "hey look at this" over something on the car...but I don't know. Might take the Impala...but I still need to get the hood hinge issue resolved and I don't like driving it far in case something happens, and the car sucks to drive with no working sound system!

| If it's sound you want I'm your guy lol. Wired up many a stereo AND have experience wiring and "amping" original 60's/70's radios. I also could help with welding up an exhaust on the 93. Id also like to take a look at your hinge. can it be welded/patched?

| I can try to find time to come out (rare for spare time, trust me), and cut that part out. And add new metal in it. Put it back on, mark the hole, remove the hood again and drill and tap to hole to match the bolt. You can tape some cardboard to the paint to prevent burning and damage. I tape up my windows everytime I'm welding doors or in close proximity. Either that or if the impala can make it to Webster, ma you can bring it here and i can do it here where all the tools are.

I'm wondering if like thicker steel could be welded in the spot where the sheetmetal went bad so it could be drilled and tapped? Who knows. I'm sure the car would make it out there, I drove it a lot since this problem occurred!

| Email me some pics when you can get some. I don't see why it couldn't. If it can't we can use sheet metal and weld a nut to the other side and make it so the bolt oed throug the metal and into the nut behind it. You have all kinds of options. It's just metal | |
