PostSubject: Coolant temp sensor WTF?   Coolant temp sensor WTF? EmptyMon Feb 27, 2012 4:08 pm

Ok I waited the new member 7 days to post pics of this.
Before I put my ss on the road I was going thru it just checking everything out and I noticed the cooling fans were not turning on so I started diagnosing them
1. The fuses are good.
2. The relays are functioning.
3. The wiring seems ok.
4. I powered the fans from an outside power source, the motors work.
5. I check the coolant temp sensor and find this.... The guy before me snapped it in half then, instead of replacing it he epoxies it back together. Who does that???
The new sensor was about fifteen bucks c'mon Really!?!?!

So needless to say I replaced it and fans both work fine. It's scary what people do to save a few bucks.

When I got it the kid (guy really) claimed he was a mechanic. Now I really was a mechanic for about 13 years off an on and I would never do something so stupid.

hahaha yea i have a title vins match but it was a huge ordeal thats why i only ended up paying 600 for it.It took him 2 and a half months to get the title to me due to his gf re-registering the caprice and getting a duplicate title for the truck she was supposed to put the caprices plates on. In the end i made out though

Thats good, because I would have been too sketched out to deal with that and would have called it off.

he gave me all my money back except for 350 untill he had the title because he said if there were any issues he was going to just scrap it and we agreed the 350 would be around what he would get so there wasnt much to lose other thain i already had ordered smoked headlights and the fiberglass bumper haha it just sucked cause i already had the car and was in love with it but couldnt drive it for 2 months

There's your first problem. Just because you work at Jiffy Lube does not mean you're a mechanic. Like the time they put 10W40 in my 3.1L Pontiac and told me thats OEM affraid

That's why I tell them the problem, mostly because if I bring it somewhere its too cold for the driveway or I fudge up big time Razz

Or 5W30 in my '69 Thunderbird. I was wondering why the oil pressure gauge was on L when I left...

Being educated in automive and diesel/industrial technology I LOVE how some guys at shops try to b/s me and I have to call their card just because they lie through their teeth sometimes. Its one thing to up sell some crap to a woman in a prius, but when I come in an obvious, somewhat modded car, and half the shop knows me already, and the new guy tries schooling me on different types of oil and what my car "needs", I cant contain myself hahaha. My car doesnt need high mileage synthetic oil when my engine only has 43k miles on it! Im sure I dont need a new belt when it was changed about 600 miles ago. Or I can get better gas mileage if I change my air filter which is cleaned every month. If I was concerned about gas mileage, I can assure you I would not be driving this car.

I know hes just doing his job, and a good job most of them do, its the guys in this article that makes me a little uneasy te even have my tires changed. I went for an allignment one time and they said I was all set, everything was setup to factory specs. I leave and let the wheel go and it pulls extreme to the right now. I get home and there are no shims in the control arms whatsoever. I went back, had a talk with the manager, got my money back and took their # off my phone. I did the work at school and I'll tell you what, what a PITA it is to do a "proper" allignment on these cars Laughing.

Rant over cheers

I have a friend like that too. Spends his winters inside his 3 bay, hand built garage at his house building/restoring everything. Theres no pride loss if someone else does your repairs. I could care less if someone thought less of me as a "car guy" cuz I dont feel like doing something or its beyond my skill level, yea, I could learn it, or I could save the un necessary headache and just pay out a little to have it done right. Just my opinion. Im no Mickey Thompson here. Im not looking to re invent the wheel, just keep my car running and looking good is all Very Happy

exactly there are times when its better to just spend a little money. its usually in the winter anyways , way to cold to lay on the pavement for long periods of time

Same here, Sometimes it's just easier paying some one than laying on your back in your driveway in the middle of Febuary at night. Situations like that I gladly pay the 45 bucks labour with a smile.

I personally like driving cars a lot more than having to repair them...I don't mind maintaining my own stuff but when you've got no place to work, or have to lie on your back on broken hottop with pieces of crushed stone poking you in the shoulder blade/getting into the rags you are using while trying to do an oil change and not get grit into your crankcase somehow...it's better to pay someone else with a set up work area to do it, lol

My days of having a shop work on my cars for anything I can do myself are done. A few years back I use to have a meineke I worked next to change the oil on my sebring mainly because it was easy and I worked crazy hours that left me no time to do it myself. That all ended when I decided to change my own oil one weekend only to find they drain plug was put in with an impact gun. It was so tight I stripped the head off it. I took it in there to get the oil changed the next day (mistake I know). Once I got home I got under it to make sure it wasn't impossibly tight again. What I did find was the plug only in about half way, not even hand tight! Shocked Shocked . The next day I spoke to the manager about this, got a refund and never went back.
The only exception to this is the really crappy jobs I don't want to do I have a trusted friend do the work. He works cheap on the side and does a damn good job.
