Tire recomendations Empty
PostSubject: Tire recomendations   Tire recomendations EmptyMon Mar 12, 2012 12:43 pm

It's time for a new set of skins for the wife's car, 2006 Subaru Legacy. She runs studded snows in the winter, so I am just looking for some recommendations for a nice all-around summer tire, not all season. Primarily paved roads, and this is not a sports car, your typical wife car.

I obviously don't want to spend more than I have to, but price will not stop me from buying the best tire suited for her needs. I should note that low road noise goes a long way, the last ones we had were very loud.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Doug

My friend ran Continental ContiPro Contacts on his Forester and he loved them. I also had them on my VW when I got them. Great tread life, minimal noise and good wet and snow traction. He now has Goodyear Tripple Treads and loves those too. But he told me he'll go back to the Contis again.

What's the size she needs?

Tire-Rack has great customer reviews, so typically you can get a good idea of what people like.

I am in love with the GoodYear Assurance Triple-Tread, but it is an all-season tire. There are no downsides other than it might not be AS sticky as a pure summer tire. The grip in rain is incredible though, and road noise is not an issue.

I find it the opposite. You need to take those reviews with a huge grain of salt. TR has some of the biggest idiots posting reviews. One post I remember "I don't like these tires, they are very loud on a grooved road that is about to be paved" Well no shit you bimbo, any car/tire will be loud Rolling Eyes

Well obviously you can't just read one review and call it quits...

But for the most part if you do your due dilligance, the reviews help avoid the real crap tires. They also give you a decent idea of what other people are happy with.

Well duh. But there is a lot of BS to sift thru. I use the 1.0-10 ratings that TR gives the tires first then read the reviews. Gives a better picture than some idiot who runs ultra skinny tires on his truck and complains of a harsh ride so he gives a tire a 3.

I am with fisher on this Doug. get on Tirerack, and choose the type of tire and the size you want. Then once you have a compiled list set your price low to high, and starting at the least expensive, check customer review. Phyllis was able to find a great tire that was as good if not better than more expensive tires. Even if you don't buy from them, this is a great tool.

My wife has Kelly Chargers on her Subaru Legacy Outback wagon. We like them. I have run Kelly Chargers in the past on other cars and liked them.

I also agree with sifting through the reviews on the Rack. It's how I ended up with my General Exclaim UHP's on the Marshmallow. And I NEVER would have tried Generals before reading them.

What tire size does it have?

Do you plan on keeping the car?

What's your budget... do you want a low end, mid range or high end tire? You certainly get what you pay for when it comes to tires. The more expensive tires will wear better, be more quiet, and more comfortable. IE, Michelin's are the absolute best.

It's my job to find the perfect tire for somebody's car.

I hear you guys on the reviews, and I have done some research there, but it is so overwhelming with all the options out there. I'd love to get a couple recommendations and search from there. Plus, I know people who write reviews for a living on sites like that...lets leave it at that...

Exactly what I wanted to hear. I thought there was someone on here who did this for a living, just couldn't remember who.

The car is ours for the long haul, no plans to sell it. I believe it is a 215/50/17. I would like to spend somewhere between $120-160 a tire, but it's been years since I have bought passenger car tires so I could be out to lunch on pricing, the right tire is worth spending money on and I'm not cheap on stuff like this.

I'm pretty open to suggestions.

Thanks,

Doug

We actually chose the BF goodrich traction T/A based on the reviews from Tire rack back in 05. Since then I have used them, Pyllis has had three sets, and her mother is on her second set. We love them, and the reviews were dead on at the time. I am not sure why, but BFG no longer makes them in the sizes they used to.
Since they no longer make the BF goodrich traction T/A, I switched my wife over to the General Altimax RT. The reviews sold us on them too. And she has had a chance to drive them in all road conditions. And again, they are live up to the reviews.

Try these.

Tires have gone up like crazy over the past few years. just like the gas prices due to them being petroleum based.

Ill post some options for you in a little bit.
