I think that'd be cool, but while they use mostly Chevy drivetrains and passenger car (Caprice/Impala) steering columns and things, I don't think Checkers are the easiest to find or super cheap...HOWEVER...there's something like this...

Razz

Matt I think he wanted a different project cus the impala wouldn't turn like he wants, so I'm not sure if a box caprice/impala taxi is for him....me however Twisted Evil
I also think the checker would be AWESOME but more of a straight line car ya know?

I love the wrx with a passion! That thing is NUTS! I like the idea a lot, especially if it gets turbo power again! I'd also do the 240 because I like those better than some of the BMWs mentioned but those might be more comfy Wink

The best idea is narrow it down for the sporty cars you'd like.

-240
-wrx
-bwm(s) and more???

That's prob. the original engine. It's a Marathon though, contrary to common belief you could go out and buy a Checker. lol. There was one sitting in a garage in my neighborhood when I was little, I don't know what ever happened to it. It had a million banana boxes piled all over it.

I think I am pretty well set on the WRX, I know I can grab a roller for cheap money and better yet, a 2.5 RS complete for cheap money and have stuff to sell to make some money back. I am pretty familiar with the car, as I had one for years. I think it's were my head is... Sure would be a challenge, but I'm in no rush

Yes, a Checker is on my Bucket list, because, like you said...Who does that?! but not for this project.

So you're plan is to do the same as that video, RWD WRX?

I would think its pretty straight forward once you got the 4wd shit out of the way and fab'd some mounts. I'd do it if i had any money left. lol

Yah, I think so. I just love the WRX as a whole, but I love RWD and I love V8 TQ. It just makes sense. I am reading up on rear end options. The guy whos videos are above blew up the stock wrx rear axle in no time flat. There is some easy upgrades out there, (STI units) but I'm not sure how they would handle ALL of the power from the motor, not just half from an AWD car...

The research has begun. I will be telling my mechanic buddies to keep their eyes peeled for rollers or cheap 2.5 cars (That goes for you guys too!). Im probably nuts for trying this, but I really love the build process and figuring out how to get around issues as much, maybe more, that the driving part. It's like a big puzzle to keep me occupied....that costs a crapload of money...lol

If it ends up being even half as easy to do as this guy claims it is, I will try to make the crossmember a manufacturable unit and maybe sell some...

Looks like I better keep my eyes peeled for a wrecked LS1 T56 F-body too.... I better start parting some shit out for cash.

Doug

STI built rearend should be able to handle the LS1 power no problam. Unless your going to run 500hp, which in my opinion is nuts, stock 350 will make that car a rocket.
Check out some of the rally car sites, there has to be a kit out there to beef up the stock rearend for power.
And while i'm thinking about it, what about a 12 bolt chevy/9 inch ford? Cut the tubes down for the width, and put a bubble in the top for clearance. lol

This has me intrigued like you. Maybe i'll wait till your done and buy yours. lol

I'd be looking for something that would resemble a stock rear end setup, because I want to keep as much of the handling characteristics of the WRX as possible. Ill be throwing enough of it off with the heavier motor and no AWD, so I would want to keep the rest as close as possible. I don't see this car ever needing more than a lightly cammed LS1 to be stupid fast. The problem I have with the R180 STI rear is that even when an STI is pushing 300+ TQ the rear is only taking half of it because it's all wheel drive.

Im reading up on a few guys who have converted a stock or modded WRX to RWD and seeing what is working for them. I'm thinking the R180 STI rear will do the job with a stock LS1, but any mods may take it to the max... still researching

Doug

Yeah, except the STI rear end only ever sees 150hp-200tq at a time due to the AWD setup (up to 65% of 300tq)

in fact, this same guy with the WRX LS1:

The stock R160 rear end is not very stout
You'll want an R200

yup, I believe he ended up going to a R180. I have been looking into the R200, which is a pretty decent amount of work to make fit back there, and of course, custom axles. If I remember correctly, he is also running toward 400 lbs or torque on that beast. I would be going stock or lightly cammed LS1, which wont be AS bad...

I am trying to see just how feasible the R200 would be and just how much modification it would take... I just fear that all the custom parts would end up costing as much as the motor...so Id love to see if an R180 would end up doing the job.

Doug

Well it looks like were going to be a subie forum again! But this time its even better! I can't wait to see a build thread started Doug. This thing will be insane. But don't forget to finish the impala too!

I like glen's idea of a 12 bolt/9 inch, who cares as long as it still looks mostly stock right?
