PostSubject: WTB and need advice   Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:18 pm

I want to buy a posi rear end with some decent gears (3.08-3.73) in great shape. Bigger the Gears the better

I want to buy a set of headers with emissions.
Ideally I would like to buy tri-y's with the hookups to the stock exhaust system and cutouts. Clear Image?

BOTH have to have an easy install process! (easy= no fitment issues! and done with all hand tools in my driveway)

Now for the advice section....

1. How much should I pay for a rear end in great shape? And if I got the same cars PCM can I just use it instead of sending mine out to be reprogrammed for the speedo (even if its a caprice, impala, fleetwood pcm)?

2. How much should I pay for the headers in good shape? Any known alternatives that fit my criteria besides clear image Tri-Y's?

This stuff is going to go on my 96 RMS that I drive Daily so the rear cant be junk and the headers cant be ready to rot out!
I do not care at all if they are pretty or not!

I have paid $300 for a complete G80 3.23 rearend.

For bolt in direct fit headers, you have choices. But some of those choices are expensive.

Is 300 a quote "going rate" for a stock rear or is it that pricey because it has a 3.23? Also I am fine with buying a rear end that somebody has done a gear swap on successfully.

I have found a few junk yard 3.08 rears in junk yards but im just worried that the posi will be blown out on it. Someone once told me if you spin one wheel and the other turns with it then the posi is solid.... any truth to this?

As far as headers go Im looking for sound when i open the cutouts.... I am not trying to make this car fast. Just a simple DD, burnout machine, that can be stockish quiet with the cutouts closed and hell on earth with them open. So I guess I want a few names of different headers that will fit in the car without any modifications to anything more than the plug wires (keeps the egr and air cause im to lazy to pull it out of a car that is never going to be fast or look good anyways). AND most of all what do those headers typically sell for on here used. I saw Crovo got tri ys for 500 recently is this about standard or do I have any cheaper options and how much are the cheaper options.

A way to test a posi is to hold one side and try to turn the other. If it turns easily then its toast.

Yes, Posi spins both tires. When its shot your back to 1 tire (the pass side)

http://badass-of-ne.forumotion.com/t985-header-suggestions-anyone

If you just want noise (or quiet) why not leave it stock & put the cutouts in the exisitng?
Under the hood wont draw as much attention but doesnt sound like you care.

$300 is a stock price (+/-) unless you stumble upon 3.42's or 3.73 (doubtful)
Start spending on gears & posi unit installed & your to $1000 before you know it

GasTT- How easy is easy lol?

boojum- Anyone please correct me if I am wrong but dont Roadie tow packs have 2.96 gears?

sdstick- I am sorry I should have been more clear haha. I must sound pretty stupid but what I was trying to ask is if the axle is lifted off the ground (both wheels suspended and unhindered) if you spin one wheel on one side should the other wheel spin in conjunction if the posi is working properly and not spin if the posi is not working properly.... or blown. I know that a posi spins both tires lol but its my fault for wording the question poorly.

Also I had not really considered just getting a cutout on the stock exhaust. What diameter exactly is the stock exhaust? Any real difference in sound between headers to cutouts and stock manifolds to cutouts? I have had my 96 Formula open headers a few times and it was absolutely earth shattering lol at least for my neighborhood! I put pacesetter long tubes on her with an off road y pipe and a magnaflow in the end but the open headers were fun for a few rides. I would want it to sound just how the bird sounded with the cutouts open and be as close to stock sounding with them closed.

Come on, I know there is more insight hear. Questions relisted below.

1. Any way to tell if a junkyard rear end has a blown posi without doing a burnout or taking the cover off?

2. Going rate for a good used posi rear end around here?

3. Can I use the PCM from the same car that I got the axel (regardless of what b body it comes from) to avoid mailing out my PCM for a speedo recalculation?

4. Googled roadmaster stock exhaust diameter but got nothing. Can some one just tell me or should I google Impala stock exaust cutouts because I think they are the same if memory serves?

1. Any way to tell if a junkyard rear end has a blown posi without doing a burnout or taking the cover off?already answered.... Lift the axle from the ground, both wheels should turn same direction, If they turn opposite it's a limited slip. Hold one side and it should be hard to turn the other. If it moves with ease it's junk.

2. Going rate for a good used posi rear end around here?$100 and blow for crap, 100+ for something good.... You get what you pay for

3. Can I use the PCM from the same car that I got the axel (regardless of what b body it comes from) to avoid mailing out my PCM for a speedo recalculation?pcm's are interchangeable, however 94/95 is different from 96/97 and you'd have to make sure you have the same engine setup... Don't put a l99 pcm into an lt1 car, don't put a PCM from a car with mechanical fan into a car that has dual electric fans.... D-body PCM wl give smoother shifts etc etc.

4. Googled roadmaster stock exhaust diameter but got nothing. Can some one just tell me or should I google Impala stock exaust cutouts because I think they are the same if memory serves?stock exhaust is 2"

I've never swapped pcm's but I would assume it's not a good idea. There would be no set point for the second fan. However I could be wrong. If all your worried about is speedo I wouldn't even bother. My 92 is way off and it's factory gears and whatnot. I just keep up with traffic.... Then again my wagon is usually low to the ground so I'm doing 30-40mph anyway.

Indy is right.
Run the stock PCM (and/or take your spare & send it out for programming)
Use your GPS for mph until you run into someone that can correct for gear/tire combo

Ok I will probably just do a core exchange with pcm for less like I did with the bird. Although if anyone knows of a better company to get it from shoot a name at me because I have not been very happy with pcm for less the last couple times I have used them.

On a side note, does anyone know where you can find 2" exhaust cutouts for the stock exhaust. Did a google search and the smallest I came across was a 2 and a 1/4 incher.

Your lucky to find 2.25" the ones I have are 2.5"

Get a flange the same size as the cutout, then a piece of pipe that will fit over the flange and cutout. Braze it to the cutout and weld the flange to the other end. Then braze a reducing pipe to the other side of the cutout and weld to the 2" intermediate pipe.

Thanks everybody! I am going to try the cutout fab if I can find a buddy with some welding skills and a welder for that matter lol. I am going to try to keep up to date on any rear ends for sale here and if I do not find anything before summer I will probably buy a new eaton and gears. I have a friend who did his own in his mustang and truck. Both came out great! No slap or noise of any sort but he is a lot more handy than I am. Lastly I will try Alex next time for my PCM needs.

Thanks again for the help.
