| MDZ, this will be right up your alley! A friend of my fathers has a (iirc) '78 350 block stamped 3970010. He is willing to let it go for very very cheap... like $50 or something, supposedly it was a backup or a replacement for his Camaro, but the car is gone so the motor needs to go too. Anyways, I got to talking with my father who used to build motors "back in the day" and said that this would be easy for him to build and do the swap. My concern, however is that it being a '78 block that stuff like knock sensors, and all the electronic sensors like the coolant temp and oil/fuel pressure on the side of the block won't fit. Also, since I use the Caprice as a DD/work vehicle I still would like to keep it stock as possible. Would this block be able to accommodate "modern" equipment without needing any major machine work? | |

| No, the knock sensors would have no place to go, and two piece rear main seal leak as does the old style valve covers. You are better off with a 87 and up block and heads. |

| I have a LT1 block that I'd sell for $50. Less than 100K, only under water once. | |

| - Everything depends on what you want to end up with. For example: using the same computer, opti-spark, OEM harness, OBD1/2, etc., or, , , Old school simplicity; Stand alone distributor (HEI), 4bbl carb, 4 into 1 headers, std water pump, one wire alternator, etc., and ALL very easy to do, when converting in that direction, or, , , Something "in-between". Reverse cool heads and a specially modified block (if 010) is doable, although a TON of work and money, thus not what you would want to do here. Knock sensors with 1/4" pipe threads actually would screw directly into the two side coolant drain holes centered above the oil pan rails on the 010 block. And two piece rear main seals are very good, and you have to really miss something obvious to have a newly installed 2-Piece rear main seal leak! I see combining an "010" block with a 383 crank (3.750"), L31 heads, simple 4bbl carb, HEI, retro-hyd-roller cam as being VERY SIMPLE, RELIABLE, AFFORDABLE, and FAST! You will need a conversion flywheel as well, but items such as these are small potatoes, and usually need to be bought new anyway, due to age and use/abuse issues. - | |
