PassKey II Empty

PassKey II system acting up on my '96 Roadie. Just lookin' for free advice. Intermittently, it won't recognize the key (Either one) and goes into its 3 minute lockdown, then resets. Then you try again. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. If it starts, there's no more problems during operation until the next time. I've read a whole bunch of stuff online. Seems like the two small wires coming from the ignition lock cylinder are the usual suspects. May look at that tomorrow if I feel energetic. Has anyone out there built the circuit that "newrockies.com" sells to bypass the system? He claims that it goes beyond merely substituting the appropriate resistor in the circuit. As per usual, I'm lookin' for the easy/cheap way out.

Been there done that. My 95 did this to me several times. 96 uses the same system. So get out the OHM meter. Take the key and put the terminals on the resistor pellet. This will give you your value. Head on over to RadioHack and buy some resistors. Problem solved.

Read this article on the Yahoo forum.

This is how I got around this issue.

Worked like a charm.

Another good article.

I think I had more money into the solder and tape than the cost of the resistors.

Bingo. If I ever got a 94+ car this would be the first thing I do, even if the passkey is working fine.
