When I did my last oil change, I decided to switch to synthetic before the dyno tune on the Subaru. So I went with Quaker State full synthetic 5w-30 oil. After about 500 miles on the oil, I noticed my oil pressure dropping. I lost about 30psi hot cruise (90psi to 60psi) and 20 psi hot idle (30psi to 10-12psi). I was like, wtf???? So at 1200 miles I drained it, and it came pissing out like water!!!! Really? After only 1200 miles? So I changed the filter and filled it up with Rotella 15w-40 and my oil pressure came right back. Will report on it later... pig

I use Mobil1 only. On everything. Sucks about quakerstate. I would think they are a decent oil

The VW gets Mobil1 Full syn since the day i've owned it. The Caprice Gets M1 high mileage.

Yeah, but for some reason all the Subaru guys say to stay away from Mobil 1 in the scoobie engines. Linked to more engine failures than other oils combined or somesuch nonsense. So I figured I'd go with the crowd and stay away from it...

It was odd, as the oil was still fairly clean, just wicked thin.

My friend runs it in his Forester with no issues, another runs it in his WRX too. 150k on his car, not one issue.

When my Sterling (British Acura Legend) was getting long in the tooth. It had wicked valve tapping. (common issue) I switched to 5w50 as per the Sterling bulletin board and the noises went away for the most part. But with such a high viscosity range the oil didn't last as long. I would get about 2.5k-3k before it had to be changed. And it really needed to be changed at that point. Black as coal and somewhat thin. The car never burned or lost oil but it would tell you when it needed to be changed. You could hear the tapping inside the car. I had this problem the whole time I had the car. If you used the recommended 5w30 it would tap like crazy till it warmed up.

The Oil was Castrol Syntec 5w50. I never had an issue with it.

I switched to M1 HM in the Tahoe with absolutely no problems. I've got over 3K on the oil right now, used no oil at all so far, and it's still clean! Considering running it on the Caprice (but wary because it's just an old car, although isn't super high mileage), but I don't know about the Impala. Don't want it leaking out all over the place. Thinking about the Rotella you are using right now.

The first thing I would attempt to eliminate would be that if something peculiar about your engine, or combination, may be causing the thinning, like fuel possibly.

It might be worth while to have your oil specimen independently tested for any foreign (thinning) contaminants.

One major reason I use synthetic lubricants in my vehicles is to make use of their flatter viscosity curve against temperature.

As I'm sure you already know, Syn-lubes are thinner than conventional oils at low temps, but maintain a flatter viscosity curve as temps rise, so that they are not so dangerously thin when running hot.

This is a big plus in my 8.1L dually, because I am most likely to use this vehicle when its EXTREMELY COLD outside, and synthetics make the truck run and roll MUCH better (effortlessly), especially when the frozen trip begins.

I use it in both axles, the engine and the transfer case. The transmission contains the OEM Allison trans fluid which is also most likely a synthetic.

I know there are probably some formulation differences (additive packages) between Mobile 1 and the Quaker State version, but I find it hard to imagine that the oil itself would literally FAIL just like that.

The only down side I've encountered so far with synthetic engine oil (after the high initial cost of course), is that sometimes the 9310 nickel alloy mechanical lifter roller wheels can scuff landing on the closing ramps of hardened 8620 cam lobes in competition engines.

Its also advantageous to keep synthetic oil clean in order to benefit from it's resistance to breaking down prematurely, -> (longer oil life) = (lower operating cost).

Conventional oils break down prematurely as compared to synthetic formulations when operated in very hot (id est: turbo) engines.

It would be very interesting to find out that Q/S Synthetic oil actually is SO poor that it breaks down like that.

Perhaps Q/S will be willing to do a free spectral analysis on your specimen to help you determine what went wrong, if you can trust the fox being in the henhouse.

I will certainly stay tuned for whatever you find out!

Those are good points. I wish i had thought about oil analysis when I drained it. But unfortunately, I drained it into a dirty contaminated pan. Sad

HEY Like a Star @ heaven
Throwing in bad 1 liners is my job tongue

I will say that I had heard to stay away from Quaker State LONG ago.
This was before the synthetics came out & I dont have any supporting evidence.

We need Matt to TRAKK down the facts of this issue.
