It's awesome because you can get to EVERYTHING and make it like brand new...but then it sucks because of all the work I only did this because I had to, you may want to drive the car for a while before you blow it apart!
I think I've driven it about 12,000 miles in the past 4 years. Thats enough driving more blowing apart lol..

Subject: It's COLD but I've been working! Thu Jan 24, 2013 12:30 am
The weather has been bad-ish, so the money is good. And now that I'm back to just three days of classes a week, more time for the good stuff! After work and on weekends I've been hanging around the garage and doing as much as I can, I was waiting to post a bunch of pics but....its too friggin cold! So I haven't been down recently. The last time I was there it was warm enough to slap some paint in the final spots that needed it. The pesky little seams of the repair and box section panels. Now that is all taken care of, I am next going to seal them up a bit with the best stuff on earth, JB Weld, per suggestion by none other than SD Stick!
Anyway, pictures are always better than words in a build thread so here are the latest and greatest!
Yuck! This is AC Delco! Why isn't it US! Oh well, I SEM'd over that anyway! Just figured I should show off the fancy NEW control arm
Not really sure why they didn't wrap the cotter pin WITH the grease fitting...but that's not my department...
SEM PORN!
These were annoying and not necessary, so I wanted to pop them out...that wasn't as easy as I had planned but they came out!
Then the little block off plates for the box sections needed paint, and to break up the TONS of black I wanted to use that lame ass blue that sometimes comes out nice looking and other times....gey! This time kinda GEY! Oh well, If I don't like it the other side is SEM'd so I can always just flip them.
Prepped....kinda
Primed
Painted, with plenty of runs
More little updates to come, probably (hopefully) tomorrow night. Thanks for looking!

Well....sdstick woulda told you to put the JB Weld on BEFORE any surface coating but....it'll be fine I'm sure
Just wondering what you did those plates with?
Perhaps water balloons filled with primer / paint?
Yes...it's easy to be critical sitting here in my warm office.
PS: In the world of BLACK....only contrasting option is SILVER.

Yeah yeah, but I wanted the paint IN those seams do there's no rust. And you may be right with the silver, but I already bought a can of blue

There's been worse mods
It dries darker which helps a bit, but still.....
Anyway, the heater is sweeeet! I can deal with this work temp.
mixing up JB
Then using it more as a "body filler" for smaller pinholes and seams along the frame. With paint it'll just look a little cleaner.
Then the inside reails still looked clean, so I grabbed a can of rustoleum and hit anything I could reach that was still clean bare metal. Fluid film kit will follow, yes I'm serious! I hate rust, I don't care if it isn't show quality.
That's all for now, I may even start assembling stuff next time I go!

Definitely coming along! Don't forget though that this is a labor of love, I know no one will see the damn plates but sand them and do them again. You are going through alot of trouble on this car, don't let a little runny paint get in the way of perfection, I'm not being an ass, I'm being serious. It starts out with something simple like this and then progresses to bigger shortcuts/half asses. Do it right, it's not the cougar. 4 light mist coats of paint is better that one or 2 thick ones with runs. If it takes 10 coats to do it then that's what it takes. Sand the runs down smooth and hit them again when you do them green. <--- just my .02¢
On another note I just recently picked up a reddy-heat heater from a guy at work. He got it at lowes it hooks up to a propane grille tank and the fan runs on regular 120v. It's small and puts out 35,000 btu. I now work in 65-70* conditions They work great in tents and sheds! Put the tank outside and keep the heater inside. Has auto safety shutoffs and all that. Might be worth it in the future.
Keep at that frame! Summer is right around the corner. Before you know it there will be a mod day in reading.

Me too! I was glad to find the places I used it on my 88 Suburban back in like 2004 had still held up when my friend bought the damned thing off Craigslist last year...even though the rest wasn't pretty. I ground down a couple rust spots and glazed over them to hide the pitting, lol.

That's exactly the type of heater I am using, they work pretty well, but this one sucks propane and kind of burns your eyes with fumes
LOL the green was a joke, plus I planned on fixing the paint on the plates. I'm going to try silver and then try black then blue to see what I like better. The sway bars are already that color, the springs will probably follow suit.
Calipers will be "as cast" color, maybe gunmetal. Or SEM It is a labor of love and I want it all to look clean so that's why this is all happening. I'm getting excited for the point where I can actually assemble everything...or well at least something

Spent most of the day doing some running around, used one of my free car wash coupons from Xmas and the salt still stayed on the cougar...LOL but after that I was at the garage doing some work. I was pissed because I should have done it yesterday but I was waiting around for a friend to call who never did you know how that goes. Anyway, progress was made.
For some reason it started with taking apart my junk yard find front bumper. Don't ask me why though
I've uncovered it! A typical New England Steel Bumper!!!!!!!!1!!!!
It really isn't bad at all, just that crusty goodness... I was shocked not seeing dead animals inside of it!
Then I filled that freakin place with smoke...HOLY COW! When you grind rust off stuff in the backyard less dust accumulates than when you do it in a shop. Guess I didn't realize
It really isn't in bad shape at all. I'm going to clean it up a bit more with the drill brush where the grinder couldn't reach, slap a few coats of my old POR15 on it and call it a day. Yes you read that right, POR15. I'll save the SEM for a future California Junk yard bumper
Next up, I created even more dust in the air by cleaning up the JB body filler and made the seams final and good or the last coat of SEM!
After the dust had settled it was time for the SEM
Next order of bussiness was to redo those plates as they certainly weren't staying in that condition, but the color stayed
sanded
Primed
Base coat black
Color coat
Clear and they look great this time

Your gonna have 1 purty frame there.....never to be seen again once you get movin on the body.
Just make sure the 1/4-20 bolts holding those plates are shorties.... once the body is on, they live in a small clearance area.
Note to self...buy stock in JB Weld

LOL! That's really not a bad idea... *calls a broker*
And purdy frame? No one can see it? That the point right? Especially when you'll have red fenders, primered doors, and white everything else...

Kind of unproductive weekend, stayed in all day today and I should have went to do some work but decided to wait around and watch the commercials Super Bowls are lame when you don't like sports!
Anyway, lets play a game. It's called: "Rubber trim or SEM rust shield!"
Tell me which one it is!
I had a tiny bit of SEM left in an open can so I didn't use harder/gloss enhancer and went to town on the previously wire brushed front bumper. This one will be on the car until I find a better one by the time it gets fully painted. Works for me!
So after that I started to assemble things...lol. It can happen!
Cant afford brake rotors yet, but these will look pretty dangling off the Control Arms once I order the other one!
And knowing I would have some paint left over I brought some heat shields I may not even use and covered them up with the SEM just because
And that's it. I kind of did research while I was there, I'm figuring out what parts need to be ordered next and when to fluid film the inside of the frame. Not really sure if I should do the big kit or just a case of spray cans. Just more to think about!

Yes, roller is the plan. I'll be assembling the front suspension, then once I figure out my rear end situation that will go in. Buying brakes I'll have the front wheels on the ground and then if I can I'll get the axle shafts re-drilled for 5x4.75 wheels or buy two 5x5 vette rallys. It'll happen as it happens, when cash flows in and out basically.
I have to write out a perm. plan for the next few weeks and what to buy first, but front wheels on the ground this month would be a sweet achievement!

Dont you have junk rotors for the front? No brakes required & it wont matter that they'll sit & rust over the time frame Just clean'em out & repack the wheel bearings. Doing a complete brake job when the time comes takes 1 hour Just an idea....& as far as the plan...YES....do it.

Yeah I guess there's no reason as to why I can't slap on the rusty rotors for now. That will give me time to save for the MASSIVE(lol) 12" 1LE powerslots!
And I love it when a plan comes together so of course I'll make one up!

Ok, so I have been doing plenty of work to this car. Just nothing worth making a post. So I'm making a larger post to accommodate all of the progress.
First, I ended any possibility for rust to form by using some fluid film and the 360 degree nozzle. This stuff is awesome...but it freakin STINKS! One of the other renters came into the garage and said "It smells like yucky in here!" while I was spraying it Who cares, I'm happy with it!
And I can assure you I'll reapply plenty more over the course of my adventure with this car!
Next I started doing some painting on the random parts I ordered and had to install.
The upper arm was an ordered piece, amazon for a good price...which I forget...but it was good! I promise, and the shipping was QUICK! Now it is SEMd like the other side.
Then praised the lord for snow and it's bountiful gifts!
Oh and these....UGH these blow! Well, they sucked to remove from ol whitey's frame! That's for sure!
Motor mounts got installed and SEM'd
Big thanks to Metric Screw and Tool Company in Wakefield for being the only place around to have EXACTLY the bolts I need whenever I go to them. Oddly enough, hardware stores don't carry much metric... And this frame takes a bit of metric. But thanks to metric screw I have the correct fasteners with no guess work! Just read the specs from the manual and ask them for it!
Not wanting to waste good SEM I painted up this filler panel, I want a minty one from a no rust state someday, but this is perfectly fine for now.
Front coils got a slap of paint, just spray rustoleum and are waiting to go in as I have the insulators, the new blue ones from GM, on order.
Then there was a long and curse filled process for getting these effers in! LCA troubles galore! One even fell and hit me in the eye...don't ask
Kind of looking like something! It'll be better once the springs and shocks are in...then the rear end will be ground down, fixed up a bit, SEM'd of course, and rolled in. Tires on the ground in April! It MUST happen! No really, I think I lose the storage in April lol!

If you think the lower control arms are hard to put in like that, try it while having a spring in there like I did. I didn't want to fool with a spring compressor so I used a floor jack under the control arm.

Stock control arms and bar for now, I'll upgrade when I can afford it or when something breaks! I'm going to rip apart the rear end once the ground dries up and see what needs to be ordered, the plow money for the last few storms hasn't come in yet so I wont spend it too soon on foolishness. Next order will have one(maybe two diff. bolt pattern axle shafts) rear shocks, fresh wheel studs and lugnuts, and some alignment shims for the front upper arms so I don't have to tighten the crap out of the bolts to make them stop wiggling around! Driving me nuts.

I would love to have gotten the springs in with them, but, without the weight of the body, the manual's method of getting it done just isn't possible. Spring compressor is standing by.

I write lists of what needs to be done (big or small), and try to just keeping trying
to cross stuff off. You be surprised how much this helps.
Keep up the good work!
SEM, FTW!

Thanks Al,
Very nice to hear that from you having seen you do a few time involved projects on this site!
I DO write lists, but they end up getting lost after a few things are crossed off, or nothing is crossed off and I start over lol. But it does help keeping a list and crossing off parts needed and stuff that needs to be painted and installed and all that, now seeing the arms hung it really makes me feel better! What really helps is going back to the first few pictures in my album of this project and seeing the transformation, that keeps me motivated. My desktop background is the frame in the driveway with the engine in it still! That was in June, funny what 9 months can do right?
SEM is awesome btw! Glad I used it.

Oh, and also exciting news is my parts came in! Tomorrow I'll get them installed and the springs in (hopefully lol) and all will be well with the world!

I have to post some pics of the stuff I grabbed, but my computer isn't uploading pics for some reason...

So I'm not sure if it's St. Paddys day or what, but this is one lucky freakin weekend!
500 dollar caddy for Chris
And I score twice in a row!
Blue Bonnies yesterday and NOS front fenders today! Does it get any better!?
I've seen these go for over a grand in boxes, I got mine out of the box but still protected for much, much less! Thanks again Al!
Oh yeah and before the coffee attacked me while I was dropping them off at my garage I managed to slap the tranny Xmember in. After that I was going to put the springs in...but holy crap I had to get out of there.

Coffee? What happened that made you have to run so badly?
That's such a great deal on those. I have some NOS parts for the Impala that were given to me, and I almost don't even want to open or use them!

Is it bad that I almost don't want to use them LOL! If I find clean used ones I feel like I'd use them first. These are too perfect. When the car gets painted I'll probably use them, but for now that red nose will be on the car like Rudolph for a while.

The only way you could hate me more is if they were red! I got all excited when I found them, when I saw how well the matched in the caprice I was even happier!
Well, you heard it here first, Crovo has Dibs. I'll go write his name on them!

Well I didn't have chain so I used a big fat strap around the frame and the jack and it didn't really work, little 2 ton jack just pulled forward and moved around. So...
I grabbed three 70 pound sand bags, my winter trunk weight from the cougar, an that helpe but didn't cut it. Enter the 38" Goodyear military tire for the one kids M1009 Blazer, still not enough. Then my girlfriends brother came in for his ban practice and after laughing at the setup he sat down on the side I worked on. Still giving us trouble. Then he pulled out the "Irish bar" as it's called down there which is a bug heavy 5' pry bar, and he sat back down. All I had to do was pry an inch and the snapped into the pockets!

Ok so here is a little bit of an update for you guys.
As you can see from above, I did indeed get the springs in. It was tough though and I had to get...creative.
I used a 2x6 and one 70lb bag of sand for a weight in the back to keep things level while I piled on everything I could find to the front. This included two more 70lb bags of sand, a weight unknown 38" goodyear mud tire military spec on a heavy steel wheel, and one 170lb friend! I also utilized a giant pry bar, something I will have to purchase eventually...just because. Good news is though, they are finally in!
Now I needed to get her on the ground! I am using old rotors because they don't really matter to me, and as Steve mentioned I should wait to put on the nice new ones until I'm actually ready to roll. Can't argue with that.
coming down...
Now this, this is a beautiful sight to see!
