like the title says....
went to Als last night to r&r outter seals and bearings.
one side was leaking so figured id do both sides and the bearings.
well... the side that had the leaky seal had a f'd bearing....
and.....yep you guessed it.... an f'd axle... yippeee.
so hopin somebody has one hangin around they want to part with, cheap.
ive already looked int new replacements and will go that route if i have to.
but, this speed bump may have the car off the road til next year... No
so, hopin somebody can save the day...

No probs. I could see his logic too. All that work for one little piece. Btw, I saved this info from when I was scoping parts for my rear end:

Civi axle: 30-3/8"
9C1: 30-7/16"
Wagon: 31-13/16"

im pretty sure the 9c1 axle is 30-3/8"
i threw a tape on it real quick when i got back from Als the other night
and looked to be 30-3/8, gonna put a couple straight edges on the ends to get an exact measurement.
not questioning your specs, but where did you get those measurements from???
i searched on the big board for a little while the other night and couldnt
find any solid info, just a bunch of factory part #s, and cross referenced part #s, etc etc., all useless information to me.
i can never understand why when it comes to information like this some body who has the measurements cant just post.
1 is xxx"
2 is xx"
3 is xxxx"
etc.
who really cares about old part #s, and new part #s for 50 different axles, from 10 different companies for 4 different width rears.
you need to be a freakin rocket scientist to try and sift through pages and pages of crap.

ok, im done ranting...

i thought there was only 3 different 8.5 rears that came in b bodies?
and then there was the 7.5 rear?

That I don't know. All I know, unfortunately, is what I listed above. Those are the part numbers and lengths for a '93 Caprice. So maybe there is a difference between TBI and LT1 axles.

You aren't alone. I knew there was a difference between Wagons and Sedans but who knew that difference would go to 9C1's, SS's and Civi cars, and between LT1's and TBI's. Rolling Eyes

Btw, if I added to the confusion, sorry about that, really thought giving you the lengths I had would help. Laughing

didnt add to the confusion at all.

i know for sure there are 3 different length axles.
1. 9c1
2. ss
3. wagon
other then that i have no clue..

BUT, for the record..
on this the 16th day of september 2011.
the length of a 96 9c1 axle.
measured 2 different ways.
1. with a magnetic straight edge on the shaft end, measuring to the wheel mounting surface, starting at the 2" mark to eliminate any mis measurement from the tapes riveted end.
2. with a level across the shaft end, using the same error free way as measurement 1.
(30-3/8")

i may pull an axle out of the ss rear and measure that to....

Chevy
91-92 sedan
1566mm - narrow (all)

93-96 sedan
1566mm - narrow (9C1 - disc & drum & some other drum applications)
1598mm - wide (Impala SS - disc & B4U - drum)

Buick 91-96 & Fleetwood 93-96 sedans
1566mm - narrow (all)
NOTE: Fleetwood housing is unique to the application - 4-channel ABS provisions

91-96 wagon, all
1642.5mm

All 93-96 7.625" (ring gear) housings are 1598mm wide (Chevy sedan only)

Sedan housings, in both widths, have the same lower control arm bracket location/spread distance, and will fit any other sedan frame. Wagons have a wider spread distance (approx. 2") between lower control arm brackets on housing, and corresponding wider frame lower control arm mounts.

8.5" axle shaft information - sedans only

yes and no...

that clears up that there are only 3 different width rears in b bodies.
but, doesnt help with the length of the axles them selfs.

and so if this info is true, there are axles from various manufacturers that vary in length up to an 1/8", some being 1/16th".
im by no means an axle expert, but is there enough play to allow an axle that is 30-1/2" to work in rear that came with a 30-3/8" axle??

and just one more rant...
why the hell is everybody always post measurements up in millimeters???
where do i buy a mm tape measure??
and yes i know how to convert from one to the other, theres even a convertor on my phone..its just f'n stupid...
so why not just give a standard measurement???
end rant...

none of this directed toward you Tom.
thanks for joining the discussion.

No help with the axle but ...

I needed two Moog tie rods today, $51 for the pair.

So instead I used a code and got three for $47. Smile

I'll buy the fourth sometime later to meet a minimum to use a code.
