Hi,

I've been lurking/trolling the For Sale boards for a few days and stocking up on some of the great technical info here. I've been in the market for an LT1 wagon and will hopefully bring one home soon. Can't wait to join some events.

What are you looking to spend? A friend of mine is looking to sell his 94 Caprice. Has rust but is a solid 63k mile car.

Mike, Pawtucket, etc. Smile. I've always liked the B-body wagons, and I'm looking to replace an inherited '99 Caravan for my 60 mile commute.

Definitely interested in that Caprice, depending on how much rust. Ideally looking for a '95-'96 Caprice (I want the LT1, full gauges, and the big side mirrors) but will consider Buicks or L05s if the price and condition is right. Budget is around $4K (either for the car itself, or the car plus the work it needs -- top pick right now is a $2200 '94 Caprice that probably needs a TCC). I might even consider that '91 Olds... Very Happy

I'm only looking for a wagon. I already have a large sedan, but I'll probably be banned if I say what it is. At least its initials are G.M., though.

we have members with grand marquis and town cars for winter beaters, and mine is a cougar. They are good cars for winter, not the summer months that are easier on the cars, those are GM months!

I'll have to see what he wants for it, I think around $1000. It is a 94, LT1, light adrionic blue, no options. Rust is for the most part under the car, crusty. If your interested and I can get some pics for ya.

Definitely! Crust is doable, as long as there are no huge holes. Considering what I'm looking at now is crusty with 105k miles...

Yup, Avon. Tires are a year old, Goodyears IIRC.

Dave, that looks decent enough for a grand. Where is it? Is the rear wiper still there?

Probably the TCC solenoid acting up. The car's cheap enough that if I have to sink a couple of grand into it, it's still worth it.

How far into CT? I'll take his number, but I'm not sure I'll be able to go much farther than New London or so to look at it, unfortunately.

I think we're talking about two different cars here and geting mixed up.

The dark blue one in Avon that is posted over and over on CL is the one with the vibration.

The light blue one that is $1000 is owned by a member of longroof and is mechanically good, just minus the rust issue.

Who is he on longroof? I need to sign up there already. I haven't called yet; I'll try to tomorrow.

Yeah, it's great how the price keeps changing. Similarly, there's a '96 RMW in Springfield that was posted last week at $1995, then again at $2000 seven minutes later.

So I picked up the '94 in Avon this morning. We stopped off at the Moose Hill Reservation on the way home to do a little hiking with the kids. When it was time to go, the car was dead. Had to jump it at the alternator because the battery terminals are too rusty to get a good contact. I think it just needs new terminals and cables, and maybe a battery. The wife isn't particluarly happy that the car didn't even make it home, but she backed down when I reminded her that her $8K Grand Marquis blew an alternator in a week Smile.

Were you going to pick that one up? I'm not planning on keeping it forever; hopefully I'll upgrade to a '95/'96 in better shape in a year or two. We'll talk, as long as it hasn't disintegrated by then.

Hi: Don't know if mp775 has found a wagon yet, but I'll throw out this info (Remember, free advice is usually worth exactly what you pay for it!). I've owned any number of these cars from '92 on up + innumberable LeSabre & Electra estate wagons + Vista Cruisers and on and on. Also, I've taught this stuff at all levels for the better part of 40 years. Yet, when I registered on the forum I never intended to ever expound on anything. I just wanted to learn from you guys about these cars. But here I am doing it anyway. I would recommend a solid '94 car, if you can find one. That will give you the advantage of LT1 option, plus the last year for OBDI electronics. Don't know what the RI inspection system is like, but here in MA, they gave up on VMAS testing (Tailpipe emissions testing) and didn't want to spring for the big bucks to retrofit the inspection equipment to plug in to the OBDI (Or to be correct, OBD) diagnostic connector link. So it just comes down to whether your MIL is on or not, and then the rest of the safety stuff. Well we all know that whatever the MIl problem is, we're going to track it down and fix it someday, but we need the sticker today. So an MIL "Kill Switch" might be worth considering. But of course, it needs a legitimate purpose to exist (Like those catalytic converter "Test" bypass pipes....remember?), so lets call it an MIL circuit safety testing switch. I'll paste this from an Email I sent to a friend whose daughter has an SS signed by Jon Moss.

"........ a view of just behind the RH kick panel. That is where Connector "C205" appears to be. According to figure A7 & figure OBD, the wire going to cavity "H" is Brown and White. Probably brown, with a white stripe. Interrupt that wire with a switch, and Voila!, you've got an "MIL Kill Switch".

I may be missing something, and that is very possible but what is an "MIL". Never heard of a "MIL kill switch either.

"MIL" is the government mandated acronym for what the tire kickers call the "CEL" (Check Engine Light). Since 1995 (16 years ago), that is what it must be called. So stop calling it a Check Engine Light (That's what Homer Simpson calls it") or the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) police will find you and make you write "I will not call it a Check Engine Light" on the blackboard, 1000 times.
The reason you've never heard of it is because I invented it. I won't be living forever, and now, like Warren Buffet, feel my need to share my wealth.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp

Check Engine Light indicates an 'engine problem' by designation and is misleading to many people ... MIL designates any malfunction of the engine that is normally related to the emissions system. In an OBD2 car it will either light up to indicate a simple problem like a loose gas cap or a leaky evap or even a failing oxygen sensor or it will blink rapidly, indicating something that could potentially damage the catalytic converters... like a misfire or engine knocking.

When you get your car inspected, it's written "MIL on?". This is an automatic fail now.
Also, even if you clear the codes, it will fail due to lack of reporting information

But what everyone is leaving out, is that you can have a certain amount of systems that are "not ready" when you go to inspect your car. And, in Massachusetts, 1996 is no longer inspected for emissions, just like 1994 and prior. Safety only. So its not necessary here in MA to worry about CEL or MIL or SES even. Who care what its called. Just sayin my .02. Im interested to find out who invented the peanut butter and jelly sandwich btw.
