Pulling away from a stop sign today, no first gear. Second gear does the trick tho. So I'm guessing its a solenoid. It's a GM reman put in back in 2000 and only has 45k miles or so. Well we will see...

Don't we all? None of my cars are getting interest. I put them up on craigslist time and time again, and get nothing but scammers and $h!t. I don't want to sell my 9C1 but the other 2 need to be sold.

now, what causes this and how would someone keep it from happening?
External transmission coolers?

I would say you can't do anything in this case. That's because I don't beat on the car, it gets regular flushes and filters, and its a low mileage restoration. I've also got an external trans cooler being that it is a 9C1. But for a regular B body, id add one all day long. It seems to be a common problem. We'll find out once it goes to Portland transmission.

what exactly is happening? My friend has a 4L60E powered Camaro without any issues... and he runs 9s.
I mean, it's a race transmission in his car... with beefy internals, but he says even in some of his stock 4L60E cars, he wasn't having issues like this.

Well I guess your friend has good luck with his race car that has a built tranny. As for my stock GM reman, there is no 1st gear, as stated above, and it will sometimes shutter coming from a stop in 2nd with an occasional yelp. Sounds like a whale for about a second when pulling from a stop in 2nd gear. It acts as if it were in neutral when pulling from a stop in D and OD.

do these cars have tranny coolers from the factory?
if not, do you have one added?

No.
I only know a bit about the customized 86 we owned.

I know the basics about them (Iron LT1, 4L60E, Optispark replacement and problems)
but I don't know about stuff like whether they have transmission coolers, or why they have problems with their transmissions

I know they DO have transmission problems even when stock and that they are susceptible to rust and rot

I can assure you, as the rest of the members, there is zero rust on the car in question. The police package cars came with external engine and trans coolers. The B4U tow package may have as well, I'm not sure. The impala SS came with an external engine oil cooler only. These are all factory options, however it is not hard to install. The car in question here does have these factory options. Apparently, the solenoids in the valve body can cause faults at times. From what I've read here and on the big forum, all that needs to be done is replece the solenoid. But this may be a calling to beef it up. It sounds like the remanufactured transmissions last between 60k and 85k miles. This is the first time I've personally had a problem. I've owned 3 caprices and drove a combined mileage of over 80k miles with 2 of them having over 100k on the original trans. It's a hit or miss.

oh right, no I wasn't saying you had rust. I just meant that in looking at cars, I was told to look for 3 things:
Rust/Rot
Transmission problems
Optispark problems

what's the "big forum"
I should probably be asking more newb questions there

No prob. I've had my share of salt water boat anchors. We were all new at some point. The big forum is the impala SS forums. Just Google it. Lots of good info there, many different styles and personalities, so if you havnt seen it yet, you will there.

oh, ok. I'm over there. I just lurk.

I've found that the 'larger' forums can have 'non-newb friendly personalities'

or what we, in real life, call: dickheads and assholes.

IIRC a bad solinod Smile will set a code but not the check engine light.

I had one go bad (open) a couple years ago. You can ohm it out from the PCM connector. If it's bad I think you lose 4th gear also.

Ok. Thanks for the help. I'm gonna research that sensor, and have a flush done this week. Is it the input speed sensor maybe? Im not a big tranny guy. Al needs to jump in here too. I shall return...

Yup, sounds like a bad shift solenoid. They are both located at the back of the valve-body. 1-2 solenoid is the one on the drivers side. Check the resistance with a multimeter and compare to the one next to it. While you are there make sure the big trans connector (round one) is fully seated, they have a habit of pushing the trans part of the connector into the case. With the pan off you can push up on the trans harness, while pushing down on the body harness.
