I've been seeing some low price CVPIs out there pretty consistently. Some as low as $2500.

You're on the wrong forum for an unbiased answer. But I'll try and give it a shot Wink

That said, they really are different cars. I've driven both and both have their pros and cons. The P71 is a good riding car, the 4.6 has enough power to get you moving. If I found a clean one at a good price with decent miles I pick one up.

Highly doubt that the cops replace the timing belts on their cars, but they do keep up on maintenance...normally. I'd rather the LT-1 because parts can come cheaper and the engine is much simpler than the sohc or dohc 4.6. I have a cougar with a 4.6 and i like the car a lot, but I think that has to do with the sport/luxury feel of it. If I got a Crown vic I'd get a "sport" model with the console, leather buckets, mustang esque wheels, body color trim, and other plush options.

personally, I like getting biased answers. eventually I'll ask the question on a Crown Vic forum
You can generally get good information by taking the two extreme biases.

from what I can tell, the 03 CVPIs got 240bhp and 282tq and the 04+s got 240bhp and 300tq. Not as much as the LT1 though.

the thing I was most concerned with was safety.
Wouldn't you think a newer CVPI would be safer? aren't they rated to take an 80mph rear end collision?
I think they all have LATCH too. (at least the civilian ones do)

I need to convince my wife it's safe for my kid

I can't say if one is safer than the other. However I would feel very safe in a crash in either. That said the cars with the side curtain airbags scored higher in crash tests. One other thing, they DO have the LATCH system in the civi, taxi and Grandma Marquis versions. My guess is the P71 does as well.

I got one for free, or 37 of them atleast lol. They are fast, durable, parts are expensive. Some of the ones we have, the dash fades out. You have to bang on it but the new dash gauges have to be back ordered and cost a fortune. the mechanic takes very good care of them. I'd say, if you want one, get one. But I agree on the sport package. I almost bought a 2009 lx sport package. Leather, air ride in the rear, center console, tach, overhead console, digital climate control, nice wheels, so on and so forth. They wanted almost $20k in the end on a 50k mile car. CRAZY!!!! Anyway, my .02

Part of the reason they were so batchit expensive is '09 was the last year of civi 'Vic production and Ford didn't make all that many, plus the Sport pack cars and the Marauders were low production numbers to begin with so they fetch a premium.

I'm still trying to figure out why an OEM VW/Audi gas cap costs $35 Laughing

Lol, my friend is a Mini technician, the 1st gen automatic cars have a CVT trans in them. The transmission, if it blows, is like a 6-8K dollar repair at the dealership! He just bought an '03 for 1500 bucks with 43K miles on it because the trans was bad, just so he can fix it himself.

I like the CVPI as well. I feel bad that NY is being forced to move from those to some stupid Nissan van as the official taxi soon. Cab companies just ordered a TON Of new Crown Vics to try and stave that off...I guess that Texas just ordered a bunch as well for the state police there?

I definitely think that the B-body is a simpler car, but in the realm of cars produced in the last 10 years, the Vic is the closest thing to it, and you can find them just a couple years old. Fords are harder to work on overall than GM (my Tahoe, for a newer truck isn't that bad...a Ford Super Duty???, uh yeah.), but the Panther platform is so ancient (1979 as far as underpinnings) it's just from another era altogether.

I'd like to get one of those metallic graphite colored CVPIs for a daily.

I too, am waiting for the day to get a CPPV... but until then I'll need to get something reliable and safe for under $3000.

Mod4.6s have T-belts? I thought they were chains

Ask anyone in law enforcement who had the opportunity to drive a 9C1 with an LT1 vs. any crown vic, even a new one. They would take back the 15 year old 9c1. More power and an all around much nicer car.

One of the biggest things I've seen in a $2500 CVPI vs a $2500 9C1 is rust...

I don't want to deal with it... at all. if it's rotting, I don't have the time or skill to go welding stuff together.

One issue with all the 4.6's is IF the timing chain needs to be replaced, it's ten hours of labor. The 98-02 cars were great otherwise, but starting in 03 the steering, suspension and wheels are not interchangeable with the same parts from the earlier cars. Drive by wire in the newer cars has produced an "unintended acceleration" issue, or "engine surge", that Ford has a program for with my agency, but I've heard that only a few law enforcement agencies are getting mitigation. Civilians have no TSB. All CV have a hydroformed boxed frame so are at least as strong as a B-body.

I've sold some GM gas caps that are approching the same price range.

I once had a Ma statie pull up next to me at a Dunkies in an unmarked expedition to tell me before they gave him the suv he had a 1A2 and he didn't want to give it up. He asked to buy it before they auctioned it. Arrow
