My old truck/my dad's Blazer has a problem- Today the truck would crank but it does not fire up or even sputter.

I got home after work and he was messing with it, I promptly pulled him away from the vehicle before he tried dumping gasoline all over the TBI. Laughing

So far, I started out by spraying ether into the TBI and cranking. It just cranks, no fire. It did sputter for a split second the first time, but it was probably for less than 1/10 of a second and that was it. I suspected ign. module, pulled that out and had VatoZone in N. Reading test it, their machine said it was good. Put that back in and buttoned the cap/rotor up, tried a good coil I took out of my Caprice a week and a half ago by plugging that in but not installing it in the bracket, same problem. I don't have a spark tester or whatever really, I'm just doing what I can with what I've got.

When the truck cranks, the injectors do not spray fuel. I don't smell gas coming from anywhere under the truck, my dad did get gas last night for the truck, but only a little and the truck drove home fine. Just wouldn't start today.

When the key is turned, you can hear the fuel pump make a whirring sound.

I tested all fuses, they were good. I tested the 20A fuse on the firewall, it was good, I also tried a fuel pump relay from another truck and it made no change, however it's not a new relay.

Any ideas on what else I should check and how to do so? I'm googling like a madman, pissed I'm dedicating my day I got home early to this crap...my dad seriously needs to sell some of his useless shit (80s camper, 73 chrysler he doesn't drive, etc.) and get a second small car or something. Mad

My first thought was Ign module. But I guess not.

Any bad grounds? No fuel... bad TB? Could be a bad pump, mine would make noise but it wasn't creating enough pressure to keep the car alive/get to the TB.

Nylon pliers holding the #1 spark plug in the wire touching the frame... Any spark?

Injector fuse is good?

If you can determine that to have spark in the plug then you'll eliminate a ton of testing....

Matt, idk if you're going to be out this way this weekend. But I have an Actron TBI fuel pressure tester you're more than welcome to borrow. Not sure if I'll have time to run out there this weekend or else i'd drop it off.

I was going to try jamming a big bastard screwdriver in a plug boot while wearing suede gloves, and trying to ark it off the exh. manifold...would that work maybe?

There was a 20A fuse on the firewall in a plastic holder, I tested that and it had continuity...I think that must've been the fuse.

I need to check the connections around the coil and stuff like that too. I wonder if the AutoZone test was accurate as well. The pump does seem to "working"...key to ON and it buzzes and keeps going.

I was thinking oil pressure switch, but if it were that, wouldn't the truck fire up and run for a few seconds?

No worries Justin, I appreciate it though. One of these weekends I want to ride out and go junkyahding with you guys!

I think I'm gonna take a break from this crap for tonight and mess with it more tomorrow. It was funny, I scavenged some things from my dad's now-screwed up 88 C1500 temporarily, and found the dist. cap RUINED, and the ICM's plug from the pick up coil GLUED to the ICM with blue gasket maker, and both wire leads cut open and green inside...maybe that's why that truck wasn't running!

This is probably just gonna have to be flatbedded someplace to be fixed, lol.

I actually can't check for spark because my dad's not here (he's driving my car)...but I'd say the truck can't have spark since it didn't ignite the starting fluid in the TB..

For the heck of it, I put a new ignition control module in the truck just now...still no start. I can't check for spark without the help of an assistant to look at the plug or turn the key while I look at the plug, so I'll wait until my dad comes back, haha.

Think I'll look at the oil pressure switch next, but I dunno. Weird wild stuff.

I still want to say fuel pump, or fuel related. My caprice did thiswhen the POS bosch pump died.

Once I know if there's spark, I'll have a much better idea! I whacked on the gas tank with a shovel, I should probably look for a rubber mallet to concentrate the force a little better and that will let me lie under the truck as well to hit it in different spots. I have to work down the Cape tomorrow and Tues. morning so maybe I'll mess with it when I get back...

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the pump. The pump was about a year old when I bought the truck in 2005. And my dad is one of those people who thinks it's okay to put like 20 bucks worth of gas in the tank, wait until it's almost gone, then get 20 more bucks. Surprised

Today I took a snowblower plug and tried a spark test in my Caprice. It fired when I started the car with the plug in a wire and jammed against metal I assumed was grounded. I did the same with the Blazer, no spark while cranking, I tried grounding it out in four different places on both sides of the engine. No fuel from injectors either...

Considering the truck also didn't fire when I sprayed all that starting fluid in the TB, I'm going to go ahead and uh, deem this a no spark issue, mmkay...
Any TBI gurus here? 93 Blazer no start... Lumbergh

Tomorrow I'll take the ignition module that's in the Blazer right now, and put that in my Caprice, maybe put the Caprice's module in the truck too, just to rule out that I got a bad module from Auto Zone.

Still messing with this-

As of tonight, I KNOW that I have

No spark. Used a spark tester...
No injector pulse. NOID light test....
The rotor turns when you crank the engine over, so the timing chain isn't snapped. No fuel anyway though...
I put the ICM from my Caprice, which is known to be good, in the truck, and no change. The new Auto Zone one that was in the truck is now in my Caprice and it runs fine.
We found a badly corroded and chafed orange wire going from the oil pressure switch (which is tied into the fuel circuit) and cut out the bad section, then redid it, but it still won't start.
Checked all fuses again.

The truck has one of those stupid 90s era Pursuit alarms in it. Years ago when I just used the keyless entry, the fob broke, so I took out the alarm siren and whenever I had to take the battery out or whatever, I used the button under the dash to disarm the system. It did seem a little finicky though. I wanted to remove it but couldn't figure out how.

Don't know if that's causing it or not, but it's gotten to the point where I've had to charge up the battery from it sitting and not running, just cranking over.

You have power between the icm and coil
Checked all your grounds? Free of corrosion?

Dont those alarms all have a ground circuit that grounds out the coil to prevent starting?
Maybe if the remnants of the alarm are still in there, you can find that ground & elijminate it?

It's a reman. one. What happened was my friend came down with his tools from work and we did what we could in the driveway. Found a corroded wire behind the dizzy, but the truck still had no fuel or spark after fixing it. Tried everything, then it got dark, haha.

My dad had it towed to a shop where a guy who used to work on his truck came "out of retirement" to work on it special, lol. They traced it back to that, which I figured was probably the problem since we tried everything else.

After this fiasco my Caprice now has a new ICM, and a rusted screw broken off in the dist. housing for the cap. So now I have three zip ties, formed into a long zip tie, holding the front of the cap down. Probably going to leave it like that! Very Happy

It was weird, the cap is only about a year and half, 2 years old maybe? I tuned the car up the spring after I'd gotten it (which was in December of...09?), and the screws were rusted to hell. The ignition module screws were also kinda rusty (but original) and the cap's terminals inside all had buildup, which I removed with emery cloth...it runs smoother now...the cap probably has only 20K on it! WTF!

O I C. Sounds like the caprice is a graduated daily driver. That l99 car I sold recently had the wipers zip tied on. I was like Wtf!? And just left em. That was when I got it in Sep. '10. So 2 winters like that. Something else ridiculous was zip tied on that pig but I can't remember. Indie would have to fill in the blank here. I wish that I had the time and money to make that car what I imagined, but he's already taking care of that with his own creative mind. :rantover:
