PostSubject: The two door thread   The two door thread EmptySun Sep 26, 2010 9:43 pm

Ok guys so if I do anything to either of the cars and I put it up on the site I'll put it up here. I'll also have pics of the red and white cars showing why I'm sitting and waiting with the red 84 and focusing on the white 87. As of now my folks think im keeping the 84 as a parts car ( Wink ), I technically am seeing as I'll use parts off of it, but I would like to hold on to it so I can do what I've wanted to do with it for a while. Also its my first car and the first car i worked on when i was really old enough to help and i learned a lot of driving in parking lots with that car. The 87 is in great shape and I just want to build a nice cruiser out of that one, which should be easy cus I found out tonight in the rainy weather that is has a posi in it Very Happy

So to start it off here are some pics of the red caprice....you'll see how much work it would need

The roof also has some nasty dents from a tree limb hitting it.

the other side is only a tiny bit better...

The red 84 is rough, obviously, but the white 87 is great and is getting a carb and possibly an intake swap this winter.

Here are some pics of the 87 two door car.

The A-pillar pic looks familiar. I studied mine and I can tell you why it happens if you're curious. Just to prevent it from happening on the white one Wink

Hint....it only happens on the drivers side

Its the drivers rear, same side as the bad rocker. Here's the floor from under the car before I did anything to it.

My passenger side is starting I think.

It's the way the window trim clips in around the windshield. It makes a spot for water to sit and at the same time it rubs through the paint in a few spots. The rot actually starts low and crawls up the panel. The drivers side usually gets more water in it from the wipers pushing the water over the top of the rubber strip and into the channel. That's why I'm suprised your passenger side is worse. Usually the wipers pushing the water speeds up the process.

Good luck getting all of it fixed. I know where you may be able to find a few A-pillars if you need them.

Huh, I wouldn't have thought that. I was thinking the vinyl top that it probably had was the culprit. I was thinking it had the front half of the roof in vinyl instead of the back section like my 87 has. Luckily nothing has started on the 87, so that was another reason why I thought it might be from the vinyl top. Maybe over the winter I'll have to take the trim off of the white one and make sure everything is all set and clean.

And thanks man, I don't know when i'll need them but where are they? I might be interested.

North Smithfield has 2 delta 88's in stock last time I checked. I was going to snag an A-piller from one of them for my car, but never got down there to get it.

Take a couple of pictures so you can mourn it.
That cars history. You'll kill yourself working on it & it'll never be right.
Rust is the enemy.
Not trying to make you feel bad.
Save your $ for positive fixes, not things like that.
Just my opinion.

Thanks for the offer. I have crazy ideas but thats the 59309480394th idea ive had for that car. Honestly I want to patch it up and drive it into the ground. But I'd also like to keep it around. Im a pack rat from a family of pack rats, so that doesn't help me either. I'll get rid of it someday obviously, but i like it so I'm hanging on to it for now. The thing ill probably do with it is save the parts i can for my white car.

That was actually my plan until I found the white one in NH, that one is very solid believe it or not. Not Arizona solid, but almost. I plan on making that one perfect and playing with anything else I have. I might get a four door and swap all of the red cars stuff onto it as a DD. I have plenty of thinking to do lol.

Well, she is really running a lot better...the written warning proves it Neutral

I put a 10" edelbrock open element air cleaner on it, lubed all of the linkages and put half a can of seafoam in the carb and ran another through the tank.

I changed the pcv with a hose on it, but there is one on the drivers side valve cover with no hose, I'm guessing its only there because the crate engine came with one on each side? I am wondering if it would be better to find a spot to hook it into the system or to just plug it? Maybe a breather? I honestly don't know which is best to do.

I also installed a tach the other day, but I plan on re-doing it because it was getting dark and cold when I put it in. I'll get a pic of how it is now.

Hopefully I can get my rallys and BFGs on the car before the round-up, then I'll be much more confident in the trip. Still going no matter what though Arrow can't wait!

The drivers side should be hooked up to the air cleaner directly to pull air into the system. The other option is to run a breather if you don't mind some oil vapors making things a bit dingy after a while. The passenger side has the pcv to let air out of the engine and into the carb. I have a spare chrome breather but it may not be the right size for your valve cover.

well its for the 87 and up center bolt covers if that helps determine it or not. I might just try to get some big hose and hook it up to the nub on the bottom of the new air cleaner. Thanks for the info Arrow now I know why the hell its there lol

Yeah, there should be a breather element inside the air cleaner that a hose connects to from that other hole in the valve cover. I would just go to a junkyard and see if you can grab one as a pocket item. Laughing

Don't buy anything for it yet. I'll bring the aftermarket breather and the stock air cleaner tube from my car and you can see if either works for you.

Hey guys. I've been doing a few things to the 87 in the BFS ( Big Fu*&in Shed, as named by my friends, its a pop up tent garage thing)
The two door thread 154232_489948406088_744261088_5939813_2937056_n
I was bored so i decided it was time for the air pump to go in a box, I temporarily used backwards vaccum caps to plug the lines as I plan on getting some headers later on sometime in April or May.
The two door thread 67143_489951271088_744261088_5939866_7186463_n

The two door thread 63550_489948796088_744261088_5939829_3987483_n

I've got some work to do on the roof but it will probably have wait until the it gets a bit warmer. I'm planing on smoothing it down and using either that silver master coat primer or the SEM stuff to kill the rust, fill in the holes then I'm going to hit it with some white rustoleum for now. The car will hopefully be painted sometime in the next two years so I'm not too worried about it just yet

I would actually rip that roof off immediately, then clean it up the best you can and put a temp coat of something on the metal for now. There is probably moisture festering under there! Oxygen can rot metal fast too so I suppose just peeling it off could accelerate the process as well, but I'm no expert...

At least your tent garage is cleaner than mine. And apparently on level ground. Mine has crap all over the place inside around the car. Laughing

I plan on quickie ripping it off saturday as I need to get it covered up. The tent isnt exactly "dry storage" so I want to cover it with some rusty metal primer for now and order some heavier stuff for when its a tad warmer to work on it.

On that note, after quick cutting it off, whats the best way to remove all of that ugly trim? I have no idea where to begin, any suggestions? I can take some pics of it later today if anyone wants to see what it looks like.

Thanks

Alright so tonight the top came off forever. I'm happy with what i saw because it really wasnt as bad as i was thinking.

There are a few holes and a good amount of pitting BUT the window channel is UNHARMED! That alone made me very happy.
The two door thread 63221_490438281088_744261088_5948168_3595562_n

I scratched one section down to bare metal and scraped the adhesive off of the drivers side C pillar and I hit the roof with some rusty metal primer just to seal it up for now.

The two door thread 155565_490437656088_744261088_5948152_5447039_n
I'm not bondoing the holes yet and i had to seal up the rust so it wont progress anymore. I plan on just using body filler to seal the holes and smooth it out a bit but then I'll have it done the right way at a body shop next winter.
The two door thread 63422_490438361088_744261088_5948170_2693496_n

After that dried a bit I slapped on some white rustoleum to see what id be looking at this summer. Seems ok for a temp. fix to me.
The two door thread 154937_490438466088_744261088_5948173_255356_n

Any suggestions on whats the best anti-rust primer on bare metal, feel free to let me know! Thanks guys! Very Happy

So the Por -15 is here and I've taken off the trim from the roof. The rivets were a bitch! And me being me I kept pulling when I shouldn't have so I am going to have a bunch of dents to fill in with the bondo later on...great Rolling Eyes

I'm doing the rustoleum paint job for right now because If it all doesn't match I'm not concerned, the car needs a repaint anyway. That Will come next winter maybe? Who knows. For now though I've got to get the roof to bare metal and hit it with the por-15. Then fiberglass patches and bondo to smooth it all down.

Pics to come later! Stay tuned!

Oh yeah, any suggestions on getting the metal smooth after the rivets were pulled?? Question

Thanks for any input guys! Arrow

I would strip the stuff you have done so far down. A very light sanding, wipe clean, let dry, and spray with duplicolor rust converter. Then sand smooth and put a layer of primer sealer, then fill the ruts with fill puddy, sand, and prime seal again, sand, paint.

I would strip the stuff you have done so far down. A very light sanding, wipe clean, let dry, and spray with duplicolor rust converter. Then sand smooth and put a layer of primer sealer, then fill the ruts with fill puddy, sand, and prime seal again, sand, paint.

Question Question Question I am not cut out for body work Surprised

This sucks lol.

So far its still just scaly rust and rusty metal primer.

Where should I go from here?

I am no body guy, so I am next to zip on the assistance lol...

Regardless looking good man!
I'm glad you are chipping away at that thing and putting in some work.

All I can say with the body work is do as much homework as you can and take your time! Takes a ton of finesse!

I've been looking around and one of my dad's buddys is pretty good with body work and says he should be able to work with it. Hopefully Ill be dropping it off at the end of the month so it can be done. I really didnt want to do it myself, so I'm glad this guy thinks he can do it.

I just cant wait to drive this thing again!

keep poking in for info and direction , we got your back ( you ain't a "mega" pain.) Arrow

I'd like to but its a really visable part of the car and I would rather it look a little bit better than my experimenting would look like.

I do plan on doing my own body work to my winter car this summer because some rust has gotten to the lower 14's and near the rockers so we'll see how that goes. Smile

Thanks again for any help even if I dont end up doing it.

Had it out Monday to get it looked at, and took it out for an hour when there was no rain tonight. LOVED IT! Can't wait for the roof to be fixed so I can drive the big girl around again. Just a better car than the cougar is to drive and enjoy.

Friday it is getting dropped off at a body shop in my town, the guy was great he told me to remove the adhesive from the factory top and to get the trim off and he'll fix the rust and paint the roof for 500 bucks.

IM PUMPED!bounce Can't wait. Looks like I'll be heading to some of the earlier events!

Pics will be up the day I pick it up! Smile

Wish I could personally take the credit for the work, but the guy at the body shop is the one who did a nice job! Thanks though! Arrow

That looks so much better without the blue top on there now, nevermind the rust being fixed. Clean! How did he fix it?

Thanks! I really do too, the top was a sail and probably robbed HP and MPGs lol seriously! And the rust not there is the best part! He blasted the bad rust and did his magic with filler, but I really can't complain about that. It looks great and can't complain for 500 bucks!

He's a wicked cool guy who doesn't BS anything. Had an Impala SS at one point but sold it because it reached a point where it was too fast for him! If you need any work done give this guy a call, and I mean any work at all. Body or mechanical!
