PostSubject: Living in VT?   Living in VT? EmptyMon May 16, 2011 5:35 pm

In the past three days I've gotten two job offers from firms in VT. One in Rutland, one in Springfield. Anyone know anything about living in the green mountain state? How are the taxes? How are rents, and other cost of living stuff. I honestly had no inclination to living there, but if two places want me, I must be doing something right. Laughing

I know that there is no need for a concealed weapon permit. Everyone* is allowed to carry... open or concealed.

Congrats on the job offers!

Vt is not too bad. There is income tax, but your used to that.

Rents are not too bad, if you go with Springfield either Springfield or BEllows Falls are decent for rent (my parents rent an apartment in Springfield, so if you go that route let me know) or the trailer at the bottom of my driveway is for rent.

No permit conceal is nice. People are pretty laid back, and it's a much more free spirited type of place.

Springfield is pretty close to me, so if you need any more specific info let me know, I know the are well having spent half my life working at my parents apartment building.

Thanks Doug! I hope to hear back from the one in Springfield tomorrow. They seemed pretty enthusiastic about my resume, but its only 30 hrs a week to start. If I do move up there I feel like it would have to be worth the expense and time to do it, and something tells me 30 hrs isnt going to cut it. But i'll let ya know. But if I do move there, I know where I can change my oil easy! (jk Laughing )

Hey Justin

That is great two job offers! I'm familiar with both places. I would suggest to you that you take a day and drive up there. I am familiar with both places and was at both places this past Saturday. Springfield is right up 91 from you, and Rutland would be about 45 minutes west. I believe Rutland is the second largest city in VT and if I were 24 years (and I wish I was), I would choose Rutland. There definitely would be more to do and is about an hour to Burlington which has a lot to do. Springfield is not a bad place, but not a great fit for a single guy. Sounds like the 30 hour week will probably eliminate Springfield anyway. My vote--Rutland

Thanks Tom! I like the sound of Rutland more too as its more "city" but I would also rather be close to home, thou I realize Rutland isn't "that" far either. I don't know many of the specifics on the Rutland job yet as I just got the email tonight. Hopefully he'll get back to me tomorrow and I can really weight the options once I know more.

Close to home is nice, but sometimes you have to go to where the work is... That is why I spent 4 years in Mississippi.

Vermont is beautiful. I spent two summers working just over the border in Salem NY.

You'd need to buy a Subaru. And some flannels. Lots and lots of flannels.

And. Uhm. Unfortunately, you'd probably be the prettiest face you'll see up there, too.

I wouldn't even know where to look for stuff like that. I suppose it's good that you are familiar with that stuff.

You could get a job almost anywhere, just some places ya gotta look harder....VT is just right there and convenient. I think you'd be happier holding out for something in a better location is all.

Is this based on experience or what? Seems pretty close minded. If he is looking to party there is plenty of that in Rutland or Burlington, but since I know Justin a bit, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's not the kind of guy who goes to raves...

What would make him unhappy about VT? Having lived a good part of my life there, and now the rest of it within spitting distance in NH, I can tell you that of all the places I have been (And I have been around), no place has ever made me want to stay away from home for more than a week. It is rural enough to be safe and give piece of mind, it is close enough to bigger cities that you can spread your wings when you want to, and it's just simple.

Not to mention it is where he was OFFERED work... why would you tell him to walk away from two offered jobs? Maybe if it was Harlem I would tell him to keep looking, but either of these is still relatively close to home, and let me tell you, it makes life a lot easier to start out on your own if home is only an hour or two away. He can always take a break from real life and go get a home cooked meal on a weekend or whatever.

I don't know being young and adventurous and raves were synonomous with each other? Where did you came up with raves and partying? I'm actually pretty open minded, and having been to VT several times, staying there for a couple days at a time...knowing people who live there...I, personally, would never move there if my life depeneded on it or even if you offered me a decent paying job. As I said before I mean that in the nicest of ways, sorry to offend you Doug.

Justin, don't let these two guys (boojum & JRS), well for the lack of a better word L-O-O-S-E-R-S, discourage you. You have got an education and potential jobs. Not bad.

I'm guessing that these guys don't have either. Well, they do probably work and their jobs involve asking people if they "want that supersized"? (McDonalds)

Oh yeah, one other thing, you can bet they still live with mommy!

Tom, once again you're spreading manure and making assumptions that aren't true. We won't have that kind of name calling and character assassination here. It's happened in the past and we've seen how that worked out. For an old guy, I'd think you'd know better. So take it somewhere else.

Ever think maybe that post was meant as a joke, to play on the vermont stereotype? Grow a sense of humor, while you're at it.

Don't worry, I wasn't offended, and the rave thing was just a comment on the fact that I don't take Justin for a "city boy" who needs constant distraction. I just didn't understand how without knowing him too well you could say he would be happier elsewhere... it was just the way you said, "never go to VT. Ever." I just didn't understand what the downside is. In fact, if he is adventurous VT is probably one of the best places to be. My wife hiked the Long Trail last year with a friend and had the best time of her life...

He states that he has no inclination to live there, but wanted to know about taxes, rents, etc. I just think we should keep it to facts, and maybe a few good natured jokes, rather than opinions. It makes no sense to discourage him unless the cost of living was astronomical and he would not be able to afford it on whatever he makes for pay.

With the scarcity of jobs these days one has to be very open minded, and perhaps make sacrifices to keep a steady paycheck, I just hate to see him be turned away from a potentially good job in a decent (Even if it's not ideal) location.

Plus, lets me honest, if he is closer to me he is going to come use the lift often and therefore I will have to buy less beer for myself.

Maybe I did get a little carried away. Point is, Justin is looking for a little encouragement. A little humor is OK but..........

Jobs are scarce, he has some opportunity. May not be his first choice, but not bad. I'm also guessing that Justin has some student loans, so he can't dilly dally too long. It's his first job and I doubt his last. Give it a try.

And one other thing Glen, at least no one is mad at you this time! Ha Ha

I've applied for jobs in DC, NYC, Boston, and San Diego. And besides those, I would rather stay in MA as I know MA law and it would be easier for me to get a license there (Except CA, everything would transfer). But if I can get something in VT that pays good but I find out I dont like living there, it'll be something to put on the resume even if I only stay there for a year or so.

I'll put it this way. There is almost nothing better than packing up the car and going camping for a weekend. That, and I'm an eagle scout. Pretty sure VT should be like my homeland. Laughing

Which is exactly why I am taking the interviews and getting as much info as I can. I'm sorry, but if I can get a job even before I graduate and I would make more than sweatshop rates. I'd be stupid not to take it.

1. Go f*** yourself, you literally know NOTHING about me.
2. I'm currently enrolled full time in school.
3. I still live with mother, exactly like the other 95% of people my age in college.

So if you want to call me a loser you should probably do it to my face. That should go over nicely.

It was a joke. The problem with jokes is that in general someone gets hurt.

Wow the hate in this thread is strong. Who pissed in Tom's coffee?

Anyway, in my opinion sometimes it's not all about the short term money. You mentioned that without experience, you're worried you'll continue to get poor offers.

You need to take a job somewhere in the field you want to work - no matter what the pay - and parlay that into a real job in the future.

$13/hr is enough to live on, especially in Vermont. I wouldn't toss the job aside so quickly, especially if it's something you'd enjoy or be good at.

Or just continue to work a part-time job and hope something falls in your lap....

Idk, after taxes 13/hr is less than 450 a week, judging by the fat chunk Uncle Sam takes from me now. I did some math and based on a $600/mo apartment, utilitities, gas/car stuff, food and health insurance I'd be short about $200 at the end of the month. Thats not even including stuff like entertainment to keep me sane.

I'm putting out resumes locally to see if something comes up, my folks told me I can stay at home as long as I need/want. So I figure, find something local, stay at home, put aside a nice bankroll for something next year or so.
