Does anyone know if you HAVE to use a T56 trans with the lt1? Or can you use any manual trans?

Well, a T56 is a direct bolt-in in place of the 4L60. But you could do any, T5, muncie, saginaw, whatever you like. But there will be more work, such as the custom driveshaft and you'd need to convert the cable speedo to electronic and whatnot. But you could make anything work with the proper amount of time, ingenuity and moolah.

Ok well right now it has a 3 speed with the granny low, I think it's a Muncie or a Saginaw. If I put an lt1 in it I'd like to keep it manual, but I don't wanna pull a hole shot and grenade the trans. What would you recommend for everyday use but will take a beating? The $$ is no big deal for conversion stuff, but I don't wanna spend 1500 on a trans if I don't have to.

F me Sad, if I could make it to ME I'd be all over that. will a 2 piece drive shaft work with that? How long is a t56 from bellhousing to the end of the tailshaft? I have about 10 driveshafts kicking around, but no big if I have to get one made. Also does the shifter go directly into the trans or is it external linkages.

Same length as a 4l60 or 700r4.

No idea on the 2 piece DS. Don't see why it wouldn't.

Shifter bolts onto the top of the tranny. No external linkages.
