Body shops for rust work Empty
PostSubject: Body shops for rust work   Body shops for rust work EmptyTue Mar 01, 2011 9:28 pm

I'm thinking about having someone do the rust repair to the roof profesionally, not my way of bondo and rustoleum. Does anyone know of any good body shops that do more than just collison, because so far in my search thats all anyone can do.

Let me know what you've got! Arrow

Thanks!

I called 10 shops today and asked if they do rust or only collison work. Collision! Surprised

Ordered Por-15 today, going to get some practice in fiberglass and bondo work I guess.

Add another car in the forum that will have a rustoleum paint job.

This body work thing aint for me! Who's got any suggestions close to me in the Wilmington MA area that will do this type of work? Every place that I've called says they only do collision work and don't do any type of rust work. This is becoming a headache Surprised

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

My only issue is what to use. I have the Por-15 stuff but I'm not sure how it will look once it is painted on. Then again I could do that and bondo as a cheap fix until I can afford to have a resto shop stitch in the clean section of roof from my other caprice.

I'm just not great with bondo either and I'd have to be using a lot of it. I'm sure I could figure it out with practice but its still a tricky procedure on a roof of a car, everyone will be at eye level with that. But I always have to remember the available option of having the clen section grafted on sometime down the road.

I think I will have to do it myself. I will have to experiment with the POR 15 stuff in the trunk this week then decide if I want to use it on the roof.

So your using the bondo to fill the dents where the rivets were?
If you never did body work just have a shop do it.
If you want to diy be patient, less bondo = less sanding = better job.
Prime & sand, prime & sand until everything blends.
The pock marks of rust will need to be converted first (this will only buy time)
You can POR then sand, POR & sand. eventually you'll get it smooth.
If your not spraying a final it'll never pass the eyeball test.

Do you know a guy who hands out unlimited time? Surprised

If you can do a repair to this roof without needing to weld let me know now so we can make an arrangement, but if I have to get the interior out I'd rather have the other section welded in. But I need time to part the red caprice first.

But you wont miss out on painting it in a few more years Arrow

I'm no expert....

...buuuuuut wouldn't recommend using POR 15 on anything that's cosmetic, I've always viewed that stuff as being used in hidden areas and stuff like that if at all...I would use something like Rust Bullet or that silver paint stuff I used on my cars thinned out with something like mineral spirits to make it suitable as a primer, but even then you have to shoot it with a gun in visible areas and then have that gone over with primer/paint.

I would just sand that roof down, treat any rust spots with naval jelly, clean it up, paint it with a spray on primer, go over that with some white Rustoleum, sprayed on. Find a white that matches the car. After the primer, you could probably fill any pinholes with JB Weld or Quiksteel for now. Then paint.

After the paint is dry and cured for a while, maybe wetsand it a little and try polishing it out with a rotary polisher when the good weather comes. Then save up some money and shop around for places to get the roof done. Hopefully you won't have to do what this guy did:

I think its the same guy who hacked I mean helped save my rear quarter. And I'm still grateful for it Laughing

Oh and Matt, the only body shop I know of that does rust or restore work is Don Roy's in Chicopee. Everytime I drive by there are always a classic or two out in front. They do decent work from what I hear.

Bill If you can do what was in Matt's link above...maybe I'll have some work for you next winter once the red cars cut up.

Maybe if Bill can't do it I'll have to check that out.

I think for now I'll have to make it work...but look nasty.... Rolling Eyes

BUT the old man is digging out some contacts from the back of his head so hopefully I'll find someone to patch this roof and make it look nice too.

Maybe you can find someone that does sand/media blasting and have them do the roof so you can get a better idea of what's needed

post some pics of how it looks now. i did my hood it had some surface rust so for now ( gotta hit it again, damn sander lol) all i did was sand it down nice and smooth got rid of rust completly then prime it.and were there was any little dips from sanding i used glazing compound, (bondo makes it) to fill in the tiny dips then sand again smooth compound again if needed the prime it again.heres a vid i found it might help ya.also ive never used this but i heard from a few shops that it was good.http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-rust-converter.html?srccode=ga110070&gclid=CNz07LHkwqcCFYHb4AodpnHbDg
