96 Fleetwood

Full tune up(opti, plugs, wires, water pump, coolant temp sensor, t-stat) done about 25k miles ago

It's developed a long crank. Runs perfect once it's started, no skip or stumble or anything.

When I crank, it'll turn over for about 7 seconds and I'll stop and turn the key back. Sometimes it'll catch, stumble a little, then be fine. Most of the time though I turn the key back, then try again and it starts RIGHT away with no issues. Anybody run into this problem before? It's embarrassing lol. I have no CEL. Don't know what to start checking first! Thanks guys -Paul

fuel issue. Weak pump, clogged injectors, dirty sock or filter, bad regulator. I would check fuel pressure at start up. A weak pump will cause your condition.

Thanks for the reply Billy. I'll check fuel pressure at start up if it ever slows down at work, its been crazy the last couple weeks. As far as injectors go, what would be the best way to clean them? We have a machine at work thats supposed to clean carbon out of the engine and clean the injectors, it's not motorvac but similar. Uses BG products. Would this help?

Couldn't hurt.

Listen for fuel pump prime with key on without starting engine.

turn the key forward, let the pump run turn back off, turn it on again, let the pump run again. then start it. if it fires right up u deff. have a fuel delivery/pressure issue.

I've heard good things about this process (when done right) but never knew anyone with 1st hand knowledge.
I'd be interested in what you thought if you have this done.

Agreed sounds like fuel delivery or pressure. A couple of checks can be made to pinpoint the problem. 1) Get a good fuel pressure gauge (one that goes to 65 psi for fuel injected vehicles)and attach it to the fuel rail pressure fitting close to the the fuel pressure regulator.
2) With key on and engine off, check the fuel pressure reading, should be at approx 43 psi and stay there. 3) Shut off ignition (key off) and check gauge, it should stay at 43 psi and not bleed down. If it bleeds down slow, could be FPR (fuel pressure regulator-pull vac hose at FPR connection and see if it's wet with gas, if it is, replace it) or partially stuck open or shorted injector(s). If fuel pressure bleeds down fast it could be fuel pump check valve. 4) If your not getting fuel pressure at or near 43 psi it's the pump getting tired.
5) To check for the different bleed conditions, you need to disconnect the fuel line feed at the fuel rail, and plug it with a fuel line plug tool and verify bleed down or not. Key on engine off, if no bleed down that means the fuel pump check valve is ok, and the bleed would be 'downstream' from the plug tool. 6) Re-connect fuel line. 7) you can then double check the FPR and the injectors. Some people pull the rails with injectors and place a pan under them, put key on engine off and look for leaking injector(s). Hope this helps. Usually I like to do some quick diagnostics to help find the worn out part before digging in too deep. -Joe

I know a bad connection to the coolant temp sensor will cause a hard start. Its worth a look.
