Also, pretty sure my father didn't pass on the body work genes to me. He put me to shame... Embarassed

Welded the holes shut, bondo'd the low spots and currently sanding it out....

Thanks. Wish I could take the credit, but it's all my father. Laughing The covers have really grown on me. I miss the white rallys but until I get some dust shields/ more paint they'll do.

Also, end of day 1. I don't care what the SPID says, this car never had woodgrain Laughing

Tomorrow we're going to do the other side as well as one spot on the tailgate and my neighbor is going to weld the quarter. He'd do it quicker and nicer than we could. Next weekend we're going to sand the whole car and maybe shoot a coat of primer. Tuesday I'm going to get the estimates for the paint. Hoping I don't get hammered too bad. Surprised

Body work is done. Going to finish welding the passenger quarter this weekend. Been getting paint quotes all over the place. Most wanted between $1500-2000. That's out of my league budget wise. Talked to a family friend who owns a body shop, he suggested that unfortunately my best bet is Maaco. He said just tape the car before on key areas they might miss to prevent them f**king it up and pull the tails/ headlights and it shouldn't be too bad. He also mentioned a god compound and polish after paint will make it look loads better. So, I went down there today, $575 to do the wagon with a single stage with a urethane top coat (whatever that is...). So I think at this point I'm going to let them paint it, hope they dont screw it up too bad and then get a good compound and buff.

I got the company car painted there. Close to $800 with clear coat. There were some major runs in the paint. They didn't paint the lower half of the bumpers that are parallel to the ground. Overspray on the windows and door jambs cost an extra $100 each. The hood and the trunk count as jambs. When I opened the trunk, there it was. Unacceptable 2 tone. Boss was super pissed. Just FYI. But, it's not a show car, and is budget friendly. I'd go back.

Well, it's staying white so it wont have to be jambed thankfully. I guess the one I went to isn't as bad as most, apparently they actually try to get most of the car painted Laughing We'll see.

•Harbor freight spray gun
•borrowed air compressor
•your choice of Paint
•Few lengths of 20' 1" PVC pipe
•appropriate corners and elbows for 1" PVC
•roll of duct tape
• walmart plastic painting sheets
•one box fan
•one bed sheet
•free rmw fenders from you good ol' Doggy friend Wink

Build a tent and spray it yourself.
Practice on the fenders, until you get it right. Sand it off and do again.
It would probably come out better than macco and be cheaper, I'm gonna do my wagon that way Arrow

Have the compressor, but it's starting to get too cold at night to let the paint cure. That and I just don't have the time to be building a pop up and then practicing it. besides, if they f**k it up, I'm not paying til they fix it.

1) You have a garage (replace all the pvc & stuff with a cheapy heater)

2) I bet they take your $ long before they touch your car

Bet cleaning & hosing that garage out gets you more on your plate at dinner Arrow

Doesn't change the fact of NO TIME. Laughing Seriously. Between having to clean/ build storage rigging a heater, practicing until I'm comfortable with spraying then actually spraying. While still working both jobs 5 days a week. It's going to be much easier to have someone else do it. Yes it's Maaco, and no, they aren't the best shop. But right now, with my budget. That's the best I can do. And thats the last i'm going to say about doing it myself. Razz

And they're not getting dime one until I see their results.

If you really want a nice job, why not just paint the parts you worked on in rattle primer and sand it out to 600grit to get it smooth...Why waste money and add another coat of BS paint. It's going away for winter anyway. Gives you $600 toward the good paint job and time to save, ppl in the car club can admire the good job you did on the body with or without a shiny paint job.
Just my $.02. I'd wait it out.

Well for starters, as I said above. I'm not painting it. Period. Everything we've worked on IS in primer which is all 4 doors, the hood, fenders, quarter and tailgate. So that leaves the roof. Plus, we've already sanded it down to 1000. Like I said, at this point all they have to do is spray the thing. Car isn't going away for the winter, still a DD, and I'm not going to daily a primered car. Looks like shit. Like I've said dozens of times. I'm not expecting the moon here. It's a single stage paint. Plus, its not a show car, its a 19 year old daily driver. I'm not taking it to Barret Jackson. A sub-$1000 paint job will suit me just fine. And as I said above, unless I like how it looks they're not getting a dime until I'm satisfied. Besides, my budget would be the same now as it was then. Once the wagon is done I have other stuff that is going to take financial precedence so there won't be any extra money come spring. My mind is made up, do I want a $2000 paint job with a two stage paint and all the bells and whistles? Yes. But its not feasible for me. Maybe a couple years from now if I still have this car I'll get a proper paint job but for now. I'm sticking with this.

Nothing big to report. Quarters are in cheers cheers cheers Going to SEM them up this weekend. SEM'd my rockers today and added some more of that roofing adhesive to some of the seals to keep them watertight. Finished the sanding on the rest of the car. So it's just about ready for paint. I'm going to tape the roof rack before I send it in for paint as I see them either A) Not taping it or B) Removing each rail thus creating one giant water leak when they put them back on. Laughing

I need to decide whether to swap the rear I got from Crovo in or replace the bearing/ axle on the passenger side since thats where the whine is coming from.

Probably after the roundup I'm going to do the new suede headliner with Blazer overhead. Arrow

I've had a couple cars painted at MAACO, and they were ok. One was an 88 Full size blazer and the other was an 86 IROC. Both were worth what I paid. Just try to view some of their work. Find out who painted the nicer ones and have him spray it.

Nothing wrong with a cheap paint job on a daily.

But be prepared to be frustrated by overspray, orange peel, and runs. Expect any more than that and you will likely be disappointed.

I've been mentally preparing my self for the whole gamut. From a "good" job to a "holy shit I'm not paying for this" Laughing . But I'm hoping they do a semi decent job that could be cleaned up with a good wetsand and compound. And more time on the interwebs has explained that to get a decent look out of a MAACO job that's what you'll need to do after. At this point as long as the car is one color and I can still see out the windows, I'll chalk it up as a win. Laughing

Thanks. Honestly, now that the quarter is in and it's 1/2 primered I finally feel like it's almost there. Last night I was feeling pretty bummed about it because the battery was dead and the car was still in pieces. But That was yesterday. Today equaled progress. Arrow

Well if you do white, yoah 'aposedah use sum lightah primah kehd! LOL

I'd keep it white, no jamming anywhere, and even if you find any blemishes in the body, white hides all, better than any other color. It'll look "shahp".

I realized that by the time I got to the D pillar and really hoped it was going to dry lighter. Mad

Also, I'm hoping once I back it out of the garage it'll be lighter Laughing

And for some reason the only primers I could find between Vatozone, Advance and Walmart was either the light grey filler primer which I dont think is meant for whole cars, this stuff, and the maroon/brown stuff you spray on welded metal. Surprised

I believe the dark self-etching primer is needed over areas of bare metal and bondo. Sand it out, and Then a coat of filler primer in areas where there are big scratches and pinholes. Sand that out with 300+ grit and hit it with some regular flat grey primer (walmart should have it)
Sand that out with 600+ grit.

I have found That if you don't use self etching over bondo, the area "bleeds" through the base coat and will show up in the clear coat as a darker area. Maybe I did something wrong? But I know that stuff took care of it

I'd stick with the white, and you know me and black cars Smile that "TBI white" it really slick.

If you go black you could just swap the doors with SS ones in front (good time to upgrade to 95/96 mirrors Wink ) that will save some jamb work. Only need to find a black wagon for rear doors Shocked

No idea, but I would like to know if you plan on rusting the hood or not? Negative camber? Various (and offensive to some) German symbols? Laughing Razz

A kid in Billerica (border town to mine) has an ugly stupid Jetta with a different color but not rusted hood, C4 vette wheels and a biggass Valkyrie symbol with a VW in the center of the circle... gay

I'm glad your effort is going into the caprice Justin! Make sure its at the roundup!

Home stretch!

Got the drivers side in primer today. Two spots I need to hit with the sander as they are a little high, and need to put one more layer of filler on the drivers quarter to get it even but other than that, I am just about DONE. Going to swap the rear end before it gets cold and that will be it. Still debating on what color to paint it. Laughing
