PostSubject: Looking for a cheap, reliable car for in-laws.   Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:56 pm

Hey Guys,

I got my in-laws a 97 Saturn SL2 a couple years ago and it's been a great car and they loved it. It got hit this winter. It won't pass inspection.

I want to spend around 500 bucks and it has to pass MA inspection. They do carry the grandkids around in it, so it needs to be safe.

Know of anything?

TIA!

$500 buys you a car that is awful close to the junk yard. You will be looking for another car in 6 months.

Paid $500 for the Saturn 2 years ago and it's been awesome. AC even worked great.

And I've rocked plenty of $500 cars. Wink

Thanks for your input though, Tom.

And no, no riviera for them. I said RELIABLE. lol.

You must be a better man than me then, Glen. And have more money than I do.

Was it a hit and run involving the Saturn when it got hit? (Probably a dumb question as you wouldn't have posted this if they got paid for the wrecked car, lol)

Actually he was driving down a road in Malden and a girl opened the door to her parked car right into his right front tire/fender/door. Hit it so hard his car got airborne. Ruled 100% her fault. But MA is a "no fault" state so even though it was clearly her fault, they "split" the cost. Her insurance thought their car was a throw-away because it was valued at around a grand. So they gave them $199 and let them keep the car. Really nice of them. Suspect

So now I am looking for a third car for them. First one was a Plymouth Acclaim (Dodge Dynasty? one of those) about 5 years ago for like 300 bucks. He popped the 2.2 in that after a couple years. So I found them this Saturn a couple years ago. Paid like $600 for that one and it's been great for them and they loved it. Til the accident. Sad

Keep in mind they have public transportation down there and really don't deserve a car. They don't work, are on welfare, and are a giant part of the general Massachusettes problem. I just try to help them out if I can, and it makes it easier for them to run errands and bring KL's nana to doctors appointments and lets them go see their other grandchildren. (Bella has NEVER been in one of their cars, and never will be, btfw). So in reality, me spending a few hundred bucks every few years saves me a bunch of trips to Malden and a bunch of headaches. So I do what I can to keep them in a car.

Thanks for help and the ill-informed judgements.

(and I'm not laughing, Glen)

You know its often a huge PIA doing the right thing.

Your the better man for it though & they should be grateful.

My company had a Sable wagon that I put $1K into in 2009 to get it ready for inspection.
I never got it inspected cause it was spitting oil onto the front cat, smoking & stunk up the inside 10-15 minutes into every drive.
If it wasnt for the oil problem, that might have been the car your looking for.
One's bound to turn up.

They replaced the oil pan because a hole rotted in it.
Think they just jacked on the motor to get clearance because if you went from reverse then drive it felt like the motor wanted to jump out of the bay. Maybe torn a motor mount.
The car did ALOT of sitting later in its life in the salt air of Revere beach. I just couldnt see spending any more $ on the car.
I sent it to my friends garage in Everett to dump. Hasnt moved yet though (& I could care less). He claimed almost anything is worth $1K nowadays. I think its worth junk value only.
AC didnt work...oh wait, it works now but not in the summer...lol

Wow man, that sucks! I always though that no-fault only applied to bodily injury though, if someone causes and accident and they're at fault, they're supposed to pay for your damages, like that brain donor who slammed into my Blazer on his motorcycle! I kind of think something got screwed up there...I've had to send threatening letters to insurance companies to pay out money due me before. I guess it's all moot now though...

Hopefully something pops up, never know. I'll keep my eyes peeled
