| My wife is looking to go back to GM. She has asked me to keep a lookout for one of the following cars for sale. Must have the 3.8 liter N/A or Supercharged. 97-03 Pontiac Grand Prix GT or GTP 97-03 Buick regal GS 96-04 Pontiac Bonneville SSE, SEI, SEL 95-99 buick Riviera Oh, btw. She would also take a 2000-05 Wimpala, as long as it is powered by a 3.8 liter. No 3.1 or 3.4 engines in any thing listed. 3.8 ONLY.

| Having a 97 Riv myself I gotta say its fun to drive. Make sure its supercharged! Someone a few blocks from my house has a 2000ish century for $500, I think the engine is shot from what the sticker says. | |

| Late 90's Oldsmobile 88 LSS had a supercharger option. Like Crovo said, the Park Ave Ultra too. They are not W-bodies though.. the Bonneville and 88 are H-body and the PAU is a C-body. Same Idea as B and D bodies. H is a shorter wheelbase C body. | |

| Why not just get another B-body? They're better cars overall and get almost the same MPG if you get the smaller motor, etc. I do realize they're older, though. And RWD. What I'd avoid- 1) Any mid 90s W-body. Period. Any engine. 2) Any Pontiac W-body. I don't care how nice they look. I don't know what it is, but they aren't screwed together as well in every case I've seen. Out of curiosity, when was the last time you've seen them on the road? The older version, for me it's about once every two weeks, if that, and the 2000ish generation, maybe once a week. Most have been scrapped! Be especially careful with the supercharged cars, unaware previous owners tend to neglect their maintenance, and the supercharger grenades, rendering the car basically not worth fixing from a financial standpoint unless you swap in a used one. A new one costs big $$$$$. I've NEVER known of the last generation Bonneville being a good car, I've known two people with them having to dump cash into clean examples with low mileage. BUT, I did like that GXP they made just before the end of them, I drove one and it was nice! I'm no authority but I've seen too many disasters with these cars and they scare me! If I had to choose, I'd look for the Buicks, LeSabres and Century/Regal. I've generally heard good things about those for some strange reason, it's like they were built in a completely different factory with better parts than the rest of the cars on the same platforms...but pay careful attention to the garbage plastic intake manifolds some use. I think there was an updated one that you can retrofit? The early 1990s H-bodies were great cars compared to the later 1990s ones. I don't think you're looking to get that old of a car, though. Also, no matter what early 2000s W-body you get, you WILL have rot issues on the rockers from the front wheels to the back, the only difference is some are worse than others. Guy I work with has a 2003 Century with 60K miles and it has holes starting, he's had it fixed once already. Saw a Grand Prix, late 90s 4 door, a couple months ago that was completely rotted away from front to back as if it were sitting in the Salton Sea for a few years! The thing with the GPs is, the GT and up packages have lower body cladding that hides all the rot from view. For some reason, I've never seen a rotted Wimpala. I just can't stand the taillights on those things though, actually the styling from the rear doors backward. Just playing devil's advocate (you guys prob. already know all this anyway, lol). Check out carsurvey.org too.

I'd really like one of the early 90s Olds Touring(?) package 88s, or 98s. Those are nice clean looking car that used a lot of the same options as the overloaded Pontiacs, IIRC

I'd really like one of the early 90s Olds Touring(?) package 88s, or 98s. Those are nice clean looking car that used a lot of the same options as the overloaded Pontiacs, IIRC Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite Touring Sedan. They had a shitload of options. They are also quite rare. Even more rare than an Impala SS.

| Also to add to the supercharger maintenance (from experience). The original lower intake manifold gaskets on the Series II (not sure if this applies to the series I) are plastic that cracks and will leak coolant into the oil. I got my riv dirt cheap because of this, caused a real nice loud rod knock. I bought a JY engine with 60k on it and immediately replaced the gaskets. They were cracked and if they weren't leaking yet, would be soon. GM has an updated gasket set that is aluminum and fixes this issue. You can kind of tell by looking around the intake if they are plastic or not. If the oil looks like caramel, run! | |

You are on the money. She does not care for her car she has now. She got it to replace a car she liked even less. She wants a pontiac. I convinced her to look at other options with the same drivetrain. While the ultra is cool, it is not what she would drive. I think her words was "no grandma cars" As for the b-body, I let her drive the 9c1, but she did not care for it. The only b-body she likes is the Impala SS. And even with that, she likes Pontiac better. We have been looking everywere. Craigs list, ebay, local ads, autotrader, and only a couple cars plus the dark cherry riv excite her. I was hoping someone had one or knew of one not listed for sale. And yes. Her next car has got to be exciting for her to buy. |

I didn't get the truck that I wanted from there. I also know a friend who went there and the tires had the belts showing through and there was no talk of the dealer replacing them...at all. I would stay away.
