I know most of you guys have a truck in your stable. I'm hoping someone has one for sale or knows of one that could be had. I only have a few pre-req's and they are nothing too major.

Price must be under $1,500. The lower the better of course
It must be automatic. I can't drive a manual
Only looking at GM's and Dodge's
Prefer short bed
If it's a pre-96 then that would be a bonus

Post up what you have or leads on ones that you know about and I'd be very gratefull. I'm already searching craigslist like a diabetic looking for a kidney.

I saw a previous generation Dakota within the past couple days on the side of the road for 1800 bucks, I think. And I saw an OBS Chevy for 800, I think.

I'd be interested in the Chevy. The boxy Dakota I can find for less money locally.

I really loved my 94 Dakota and I really loved my 88 k5 Blazer. I just really really want to get another truck bounce

It wasn't a boxy Dakota. It was the roundy one. But not the boxy roundy one.

All 8 are diesel. Not a fan of diesel engines. Mainly because of not knowing how to fix/maintain them, plus sometimes it's hard to find gas.

20mpgs, anti radar paint and solid as a tank change your mind? It is Diesel, not gas. You will find it hard to find "DIESEL" Razz

You'd be suprised what's available at the times and locations I find myself in. I've thought a few times it's a good thing I don't drive a diesel or a turbo car when you end up at a pump that only has 87 and 89.

Otherwise I'd be all over that. I really need to have a truck that can survive a desert raid, in the winter in Mansfield Laughing

Nice thing is the Blazer cucv M1009 has 3/4 ton suspension, and 3:08 gears, and gets an honest 20 mpgs empty with driver, where the 1 1/4 ton m1008 pickup and M1028 Ambulance come with 4:56 ratios and probably get 12-16 mpgs.

My neighbors were thrilled when the red caprice left cus i wasn't running it on Saturday mornings anymore lol. Now they don't like me again because I come home late with the white one which is just loud enough to disturb them.

But really that's bulls**t. Kind of like Matt Trakker's neighbors calling the Fire Department on him for running his blazer.

To keep things on topic, my neighbor sucks. Always has. But, I, as well as our other neighbors across the street, clearly witnessed him watching porn through an open window on his house...and we took pictures of it while laughing our asses off. So I can always upload those to the internet if he ever bothers me again.

Laughing

Oh wait, yeah.

Brad, I'd concentrate on the OBS Chevy trucks (88-95 TBI) and stick with that. I'd definitely say those are the best bet when looking at less than 1500 dollar trucks, everything else seems to have at least a few more problems turn up, have problems passing emissions inspection, etc. There was a clean ext. cab one on CL for a while that was in your price range.

Lol matt.

You could always try looking at little s-10s, the v6s arent that bad and they get decent mpgs. the s-10 blazers arent a bad deal either.

S-10s are not bad, but stay away from the 4x4s. They seem to have the most issues. A nice 4.3 2WD would be a good choice.

I say avoid the s10s if possible. I've never heard a good thing about the last generation ones, it was always ball joints, head gaskets, blown intake gaskets, someone I knew even blew the engine once because they left some plastic door for the oil filter open, and it caused it to overheat or something. Laughing

These are the reasons I said 2wd 4.3. Basicly no problems at all. 4X4s had ball joint issues. I have not heard of the 4.3 having any issues, but I have heard the 2.5 having problems.

Laura had an s10 blazer. Don't want to go down that road again. The front end was a nightmare to work on, tuneups sucked thanks to one plug being buried, and the spider injection system sucked. Not doing another s10.

It's either an old GM 1500 or a Dakota

I really wish people would respond when you try to reply to their ads. I e-mailed someone about a truck a few times over the past 2 weeks from 2 different e-mail addresses with different subject lines, and not a single reply. I know it's not getting filtered, so they must just be jerkoffs. Funny thing is they keep relisting the ad with a lower price every week. Makes me wonder why they don't just sell it to the people who were interested in the first place instead of acting desperate.

And for the record, a 4x4 S-10 is really a T-10 and a S-10 is a 2wd. The same way a C=2wd, and K=4wd in full size trucks.

Ok so now I found something and have an issue. It's a truck that is great in every way except the frame is dying. The catch is that it comes with a parts truck with a great frame that needs some work to be made road worthy. I can't do a frame off here and even if I could I probably wouldn't.

So if anyone can clean up the frame for me on the truck I'm looking at then they can have the other truck for free. It needs some work but the frame still has the original paint and it's a 4-speed manual with a small v8.

2WD s-10s are not troublesome like the 4WDs are.

No clue yet. I'm going to see it next weekend if all goes well. He had the rear shock mount replaced at one point since it was pretty bad, but he says it passed inspection without a problem since then so he never got around to doing any other work on it. It's his daily driver at the moment so it can't be all bad.

I'll know when I see it. I'm an expert on rot Laughing

I've got feelers out on a few trucks and a couple phone calls to make tomorrow. There's a few I may be interested in but they're all a good distance off in NH so they're getting pushed down the list for convenience reasons.

Depending on how my calls go I may be asking if someone can take a look at one for me in Franklin, NH.

What kind of truck? It makes a difference no what the frame issue is. We did a ford years ago, and it took more work than it was worth.

Never touching a ford. Too many problems. I'm only interested in GM and Dodge. Dodge's tend to be rust buckets, but if you can keep gas in them they work hard for a long time. GM's are slightly less rust buckets and way better on gas, but they have the usual GM design flaws that I always seem to run into.

Fords aren't bad, they have their issues and the Chevy's do too...but it seems the 88-95 Chevy and GMC are indestructible, and when something catastrophic does happen if at all, your repair bill is way less. Ford seems to overcomplicate a lot of stuff and put parts in the way you have to remove to reach bolts, etc. The Fords tend to have spark plugs rust into the holes from the angle they're pointing (salt and water collects), the exh manifold studs go, spring shackles rot out, etc. The GMs get bad rear cab mounts and cab corners, the trannys generally need a rebuild around 100-150K, fuel injectors go...the 10 bolt rear ends are crappy and dont last as long as the 14 bolts do...Dodges just suck. Would it be inappropriate for me to get an old Suburban considering I'm usually driving alone, or at most with 2 other people in the car? It seems a bit big for my needs, but I'm not sure if it's still considered an acceptable use of a vehicle.

Dude... Have you ruled out a 2wd s10??? I've seen TONS of them on CL for less than a grand in decent shape. Perfect beater. Especially the 4 cylinder ones, cuz they are great on gas and have a bed for hauling... And they are C-H-E-A-P!

Just a thought...

No on the s-10. Plus I don't want another beater. I want something decent that can become obnoxious with little effort Wink

Too much work for a little pos with an electrical nightmare drivetrain.

I'd rather an LQ4 if I'm going to do all the work Wink
