'94 Caprice with L99.

Bogs down at highway speed with a check engine light. Symptoms then went away after a few miles. By the time we got home after a long drive (40 miles) the car started to stumble and then rev to the moon and then stumble and so on. I'd say the revs fluctuate between 500 and 3,500 give or take a bit (no tach so it's an educated guess based on almost stalling and surging to the point the brakes didn't want to hold it). The idle problem didn't change based on the gear. Even in park it was doing it. No check engine light during erratic idle.

Would a bad temp sensor cause this? I know the one on the car is broken and not fully seating.

If not that then what else to look at? I'm thinking test egr, clean maf, clean iat, maybe clean iac.

I just need some areas to focus on to make the diagnostic/repair as quickly and efficiently as possible. I'd like to have everything sorted out and fixed in the span of a few hours.

I'm pretty sure it's a bad sensor or ground somewhere. The volts started reading a little high the day it started and today the volts are reading very high. I'm going to swap out the temp sensor and see where that gets me. If the problem comes back tonight then I'll have to play with the wiring around the coil and the icm.

On a side note the aux battery post is deffinetly running hot. The color isn't right and the plastic cover has a hole melted through it from resting on the post wrong. Hopefully I can track down the brass post. I know when I swapped it on my car a few years back only one dealer had any in stock and I had to reuse the original nut.

I have only had one car with the aux post issue. It was fixed under warranty with an upgraded brass one. But I remember the car would either not start, or stumble driving down the road. The coil wire harness is another place of concern, as is the opti harness if it is just a stumble.

We replaced the temp sensor which was broken, and the air filter and pcv valve. So far the car is doing much better and that's after driving the same distance and amount of time on the same roads as when the problem started. I'm going to do the fuel filter on Thursday just for the sake of doing it.

The maf looked clean and the throttle blades looked pretty clean so I left them alone for now. Same with the egr.

As of this moment I'm going to say the problem was the broken temp sensor and it is now fixed. I just need to bleed the system some more and top off the fluid. Hopefully there are no other issues to deal with for a bit.

I am going to swap the post though as soon as I can find one.

Good spot. That's the place Billy listed that's clearing their inventory. I'm going to hopefully snag one locally though. That ebay one is a fallback.
