LO5 Oil Leak Empty
PostSubject: LO5 Oil Leak   LO5 Oil Leak EmptyWed Mar 27, 2013 4:43 pm

So I have a weird oil leak.

Right before I left for FL, the timing chain started slapping. Swapped out with new. Now I *thought* the cover was sealed and gasketed properly. But by about halfway down I was down about a 1/2 quart of oil. Until then the car has never used oil. However, the oil was leaking and sitting above the water pump, close to the intake. But the intake is dry Suspect Flash forward to today. Pull off the airbox, its has a rather thick film of oil and the bottom of the car has oil spray on it. So I have NO clue now.

My first thought is the timing cover didn't seal right and the oil is being blown around by the belt. Car is running fine otherwise no CEL's, low oil light or engine noise. Just leaking oil Surprised

My concern is that to get the gasket that goes between the oil pan and timing cover correct, the pan needs to come down, and doesn't that equal the motor coming out? We loostened about 4 bolts back on each side but I dont think it was enough to seat the lower gasket correctly.

Lower timing cover is a good possibility! when I did the gear drive in my truck i had to loosen ALL oil pan bolts to get enough clearance to seat the gasket,
Drop the pan and get the felpro one piece oil pan gasket.

Did you change the crankshaft seal on the timing cover when it was off?

I got so pissed from dealing with timing chain gaskets that I switched to a 2 piece timing cover so I never have to deal with the oil pan gasket when doing timing chain/cam work,
