PostSubject: Frame Off (but only a little)   Fri Sep 10, 2010 2:03 pm

So after watching the high mile 95 marinate in the bay for 4 months
and waiting until the outside temp dropped below 100 deg F
I decided the day of judgement had come.
I threw the front frame & rear axle up on jackstands.
Jumped under the car with my 15mm & a pipe & started on the body bolts
Nut on #3 (drivers left foot) spun free @%*& but I kept going
#4 (between A&B pillars felt bad so I used Toms suggestion & drilled thru the top for a PCBlast.
That worked, thanks Tom.
#1,2,5&6 came out with a little praying & a little more cursing.
#7 was history, I knew that going in. (Anyone drilled thru the trunk to access this???)
Stripped the stuff off both wheel wells, yanked them, mainly for access to #3 (both sides)
Separated the bumper cover, loosened a couple of holddown clips & tried to think of what I forgot.
Took a 2x3 & nailed it to a pc of hardwood from a sheet metal skid
Put my jack on the wood under the B pillar & separated that body like nothing.
Still need to raise the rear a little to get those bushings out but the front is there.
Judgement:
Matt will drive this car. The frame is fine. Not M. Ross fine but solid.
Sheet metal is sketchy but I'll patch this up as needed to buy it enough life for his 1st car.
It'll be a car without a guaranteed future (as his 1st car it's future is questionable anyway).
I'll make it mechanically sound, have Doug on speed dial.
If he wants to keep an Impala none of the parts will go to waste.
Another day as productive as this & I'll be in good shape.
Now to decide where to go with the motor & drivetrain...

Good job, Steve! You're a braver man than I! Body bolts up here make me cringe. Wink

Matt's a very lucky young man.

Remove the clutter w/out disconnecting anything.

Cell phone pics FTL

We have lift off.

This is how I made it happen, the g-lift method.

I was afraid to work anywhere on the floorpan so I chose the rockers.
They'll need to be replaced anyway, will probably try to bend up the replacements at work.
Because they're low I can maybe get away with it.
I need to talk to Glen or Mark so I can hear how & where they grabbed the body.

So the body was completely up.
I'm changing my numbering system.
Originally I counted the core support as 1, now I'm doing it right.
Interesting enough the softer (e-4145) energy suspension mounts come with 8(per side). They include the core support & #5 but dont give you the lowers for 1,2 or 3. No
Body had to come up almost 3-4 inches to get #3 out (A pillar) as opposed to 2 in for the core, 1 & 2.
Gave me a good view of the uglyness inside the POS frame.
Solid enough...lets move on.
Couldnt get the rear to separate enough with the uniform rocker lift method.
Didnt have the guts to raise it anymore in the front. I knew I'd pop an AC line.
Put core support lowers & upper #1,2 & 3 in. Put lowers & bolts in 1& 2
Will attemprt to pick up the just rear tomorrow.
Body likes to move around when separated. I was working slow so it didnt scare me pale
Found the factory aligning points & put it back in position.
M.Ross sent me some leftovers & 1 of the core bolts was exactly what I needed.
Thanks Mark.
Alls good.....until tomorrow.

How did you get the rears out? I've had to cut holes in the trunk floor to access them on some cars.

#4 #5 &#6 tomorrow.
#7 drivers bolt was rotted thru, passenger collar was total flake so those are out.
When I jacked the rear 1" higher then the front the body slipped forward 1/2-3/4 inch.
I stopped leveled it replaced & torqued in #1,2 . Put #3 cushion in but no bolt.
Will be jacking JUST the rear tommorrow in hopes of seperating enough.
Did drill thru the trunk for #7.
Thus far the tank is still in. If this becomes a huge PIA I'll yank it so I dont ef it up.

So the rear was babyfood.
Grabbed the rear rockers (reinforced due to rust) & up she went.
Seperated easy & quickly. NO problem.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Spent some time rust converter & undercoating then put the rest of the bushings in.
Dropped it, put in the bolts, torqued & done.
Used the mueller bushings for the missing 1,2 & 3 lowers
Once the bumper cover is back on I'll re-shim the core support & look for the next job.

Considering you're doing a mini frame off, and have an extra tranny and rear in the corner of the photo, it's time to change your name to Mini-Mark.

Good work Mini-Mark. Glenn will be proud Laughing

And seriously though, good job with the mounts. I wouldn't have the balls to try to undo them on a New England car! Smile

(On some of our cars) if you wait long enough they just undo themselves!

Ya, they pretty much did.
I went after this only because it was either get it back in sound condition or part it out.
I also have red poly in my 96 & I've had just about enough of that. Practice round.
I knew this 95 needed help because when I R&R'd the fuel pump I saw #7 drivers side was gone. I drove this til the day I had it lifted into the bay (4ft loading dock).
I was amazed at how bad some of them were but still came out. PCBlaster FTW

Steve, if you were smart you would just drop that car back down on the new mounts and not become a mini-Mark... With the intended use (Matt's Car), and the miles, I would not dive much deeper into it...

Have fun!

Thats the plan. Arrow
The rearend I bought from you way back was for this car.
Existing rear had started to hum (posi has been dead for years) possibly bearing(s).
I have rear control arms so thats a 1 shot deal. May want to just get some stockers & save/sell the good stuff.
Still need to do the essentials like brakes & exhaust, possible front end. Have all that covered.
Need drivers side emergency brake cable & would like pedal to tensioner if possible.
Will be looking for a driveshaft.
The rest is cosmetic. I wont be going to deep.
Now Matts list is completely different.
Based on his annual income, his would be the WISH list. Razz
So grab a big box, label it "Post Honeymoon rescue fund" & fill it up lol!

Today
Cut off the exhaust, 2 cuts, 1 after cats & 1 after mufflers
Dropped driveshaft.
Had the rear ready to come out but the lower trailing arms didnt want to unbolt.
Niether the front or rear bolts were cooperating.
Had to scoot at lunch so I'll figure that out tomorrow

24" breaker bar, You'd be surprised the size bolts you can snap with a little extra leverage. Smile

Impact would be better.

Already hit it with the 1/2" Impact wrench.
Sawz all wont cut those bolts will it?
Arent those Grade 8+
Of course one of the problems is I cant get a 3 ft pipe on it
Its only up 18inches or so on ajckstands
I think the bolts rusted all inside the sleeve too

If you are using a breaker bar take the socket off and rotate it 90°, then you should have a better angle.

Gun is OK I think, might have the regulator presure down (didnt check that)
Yes, I'll use heat next, I didnt want that rubber stink through the shop.
Tomorrow AM, 3 cups of coffee & I'm on it
Rear is dangling there. If I have to support it for a bar, I will
I wont be denied. Rear out by 8AM even if I need to cut the arms in 1/2

The bolts rot inside the sleeve and everything freezes together. That's why Doug cuts the arms and send the rear-ends to their new home with dangly bits.

That works for Doug, he's not interested in the carcass.
Both sides of the frozen bolt need to be gone for the arm (or pc's) to come out.
If I need to I'll cut them out with a torch.
Hope I repaired those fuel lines properly affraid
Watch for me on the news Shocked
