Engine compartment improvements. Empty
PostSubject: Engine compartment improvements.   Engine compartment improvements. EmptyTue Mar 10, 2009 9:51 am

I am going to be swapping my engine later this year and I was looking for some ideas on how to improve the engine compartment a little more. I originally went with a generic GM blue for the engine to give it a little more of a pop, I did the intake in aluminum, the accessory mounts in flat black and the air cleaner, thermostat housing, and valve covers in black wrinkle coat. I am not a fan of chrome so adding a dress up kit is not going to happen. I was wondering what else to paint under the hood to bring more focus on the actual engine. Here is what my engine compartment looks like for the most part.

I am going to be painting the alternator flat black for one, as it is a major eye sore and draws your eye to it. I was thinking about painting the A/C drier, A/C compressor, master cylinder, wiper motor, and the overflow and washer tanks flat black. I was thinking about painting the A/C lines, the fuel lines, and the throttle cable bracket gloss black. I will be replacing the wiring harness covers with black tubing, as the original tubing is falling apart.
Does anyone know of a paint on manifold treatment that will not burn off in a couple of days? I think the manifolds are ugly and I would love to change that too.
Any suggestions on anything else would be great too, thanks in advance.
Ray.

Painting all the tanks in the engine bay black will certainly draw attention to your engine. I plan on doing the same. I am gonna mask off a line on the side of the washer and coolant tanks so I can still see the level. For the manifolds I would paint them a dark grey with appropriate paint for the location. (high temp)

I painted my tanks black with Krylon Fusion and it really helped to make the engine compartment look less cluttered. To check my levels I have to pop the caps off and look inside, but the tanks had turned yellow with age anyway so I was already checking the levels this way.

One note, you may want to lightly sand the tanks before painting them. My coolant tank came out great, but the washer fluid tank had small lines in it from the manufacturing process that were invisible until the paint brought them out.

One of the best ways to bring attention to the engine would be an Electric Fan swap. Also, like everyone said you can paint the water tanks.

An electric fan swap is coming someday but not during the engine swap, I do like the ram air set ups too. I have some mental plans for my own cold air set up using a dual snorkel modded factory air cleaner. I will paint the tanks for sure, I just have to figure out if I am going to use flat, semi gloss, or gloss black paint. I am also going to look for a darker blue engine paint to closer match the GM blue that was in use for so long, and to match the interior a little better. I would go with vintage Buick green but there is no way to tie it into the rest of the car and I think it would stick out like a sore thumb. At least it doesn't look like a bag of skittles Laughing .

What? This isn't what comes to mind when you think of Skittles?

Honestly your engine looked awesome, it is the green hoses that killed it.
Now com'on it isn't even your problem anymore, and I did use a smiley isn't that the universal "I was joking" sign.
lol! geek scratch
