Ground straps Empty
PostSubject: Ground straps   Ground straps EmptySat Jul 31, 2010 5:37 pm

While I was attempting to replace the plugs in my Caprice today (Epic fail, I'll have to buy some shorter jackstands to use under this thing and go through the wheelwells, another story altogether), I noticed a ground strap that goes from the back of the driver's side head to the firewall. It's rotted off at the firewall.

My car has had problems with radio reception since I've owned it, so I'm definitely going to replace this right away. Anyone know of any other places the 91-96 B cars have, or should have, a ground strap?

On my truck, I found both straps broken from the frame to the pass. head and from that head to the body, I don't know how it was running as well as it did. I fixed those, and added one from my alternator shell to the engine to help ground it out better, I heard that sometimes the alternator can't ground well through it's bracket due to dirt and corrosion.

I added one from the a/c compressor stud to the frame rail. It made the under hood light shine nice and bright and it always worked once that strap was added. I'm sure it helped in other ways too but never noticed how.

That strap meant that there was one from the battery to engine, battery to body, engine to body, and engine to frame. I never got around to adding one from battery to frame or body to frame though.

I'll have to get some more of these at some point, only found one at VatoZone.

I replaced the engine to body at the firewall strap that was broken, what a pain that was. Took me over an hour, and I cut the crap out of my hands! The bolt for the engine side of it is a strange one where when the bolt is in the head, there is a stud coming off the top with a lock washer and a nut to hold the strap's eyelet on. The damn thing was all frozen together, and there was no way I was getting it apart even with PB Blaster. The bolt came right out of the head itself and the threads looked brand new. Laughing

I just looped the new strap over the bolt and put it back in the head.
