I recently purchased 4 Roadmaster wire hubcaps. I already had a set so now I have 8. I chose the best 4 of the 8 to go onto my Oldsmobile 88. They are in really good shape. But, I want them looking new. I picked up some Never Dull. It works amazing on stainless. I took one cap off and brought it in the house and went to town. I didn't take a before pic but after about 2 hours here are a few 'after' shots with and without flash.

Ignore the slight scrapes on the edge. This is the worst of the 4.

Let me know what you think I worked hard on this it was tedious work. I used Never Dull, a microfiber towel and Q TIPS!! Also, cleaned with some glass cleaner when I was all done.

I kinda have a thing for extreme attention to detail. Crovo makes fun of me for it. "Do you wash that thing every day?" lol

It's something like a sickness... it occupies a lot of my time and when somethings cleanliness, or shine is not "up to par" I tend to clean it and keep going until it is completely spotless. Everyone thinks I am crazy. This is why I lost my old "detailing" job. They said I did "too much" to the customers cars. A full detail is a full detail. They were hackers. This is also why I don't do dishes. I clean each dish for a good 2 minutes... after a while I cant stand there anymore and my back starts to hurt!

I would like to start my own REAL detailing business. But I am a broke 22 year old so the funds cannot allow it right now. Not a lot of people know what detailing is. They think washing their car at the local car wash is detailing. Me taking these caps off and cleaning them front and back is what I would call detailing. Very Happy

i feel better knowing im not the only one who suffers from the detailing sickness.
i work in a reconditioning shop at a dealership, if its slow (and the boss isnt around) i can spend 5 hours on one car. ever use an air compressor for cleaning interiors? makes everything so much easier.

Yes I always use compressed air when detailing interiors. When I am done with these caps I will have at least 8 hours into them. Shocked

I will admit to that I use the little cans of compressed air to clean the nooks and crannies on my cars. I miss being able to clean my cars. Thanks neon driving bitch!

Yes...thats called OCD. Every good detailer should have it.
If your old employer had vision he'd of had a GasTT special.
He could of bumped the price in levels.
The OCD special even cleans the inside of the hubcaps Very Happy

....it's all about LOCATION, find a bay in an affluent neighborhood, hand buff the right guys car & off you go.
You will no longer be 22 & you will no longer be short of funds Exclamation

There are alot that dont have a clue, but once you start dealing with 7 series BMW's, Mercedes, Lexus, Corvettes, etc you'll find they not only know...they think nothing of dropping $4-$500 for the OCD special

You are absolutely right about the high dollar car owners paying big bucks for details. After all, it is a small portion of their cars actual value.

Hey if I had the $ to do it. Id drop that on my '03 VW. Then again, if I had that kinda coin I probably wouldnt be driving an '03 VW Razz

Also, since we have a couple detail guys here. Anyone know a good leather cleaner? I've yet to find one that did any good on freshening up/ cleaning minor dirt off of leather. Also, whats a decent carpet cleaner?

Zaino makes a good leather cleaner & conditioner. Thats 2 products not all in 1.
I always use the high tech spray from AutoZone (or where-eva) to clean the carpet.
Has that chemical 1/2 good-1/2 bad smell for a while but I dont really mind.

The husband of my wifes friend used to do high end detail work
Had Celtics (Parish) & others waiting in line. They had $1K packages.
Guess they had to make sure there were no seeds under the seat. Razz
He used to keep their cars for days getting EVERYTHING
Would of made Tim feel right at home.
I think a divorce ended that business, not sure, he just went away.

I'll give you some advice from a business stand point.

Go to some big local car shows. I'd suggest the Foxboro show or one similar to that. Pass out business cards and offer some people a discount dirt cheap price for a full detailing. Tell them that your giving them a discount price because you're hoping that they'll tell their friends about how great your work is and drum up business. All it takes is one guy with a show car to say yes and if the job is done right he'll spread the word.

If you really want to drum up a bunch of business fast then offer a full detailing job as a prize to the show winner or as part of a 50/50 raffle. That way people will associate your detailing with show car winners. It's suggestive advertising Wink

Just make sure you have a name for your detailing biz so it looks professional. And maybe even offer detailing at their house so that they can have their car done in their own garage. That'll appeal to the trailer queen crowd.

Take some hub caps and finned valve covers around to show how good your work is. If you can clean up those 2 things then they'll trust you to do damn near anything. I've seen people spend big money and ship parts across country to get valve covers cleaned and polished.

For leather I use Lexol. It is a little expensive but it works. The cleaner is $10 and the conditioner is also $10. You use some water and a terry cloth towel. Dunk the towel in the water and wring it out. Then, spray the cleaner onto it and work it to a lather. Scrub your seat with the towel. Get another clean damp towel and wipe it down. Then, wipe it dry with a third dry towel. Then apply the conditioner with an applicator pad and buff off with a microfiber. Your leather will look, feel and smell new.

For carpets and seats I usually just use a diluted All Purpose Cleaner. Spray on, scrub with a brush, rub with a towel.

I can detail pretty well, I also own a high speed buffer. But, I have not had any GOOD training with it. I can use it, and have not burned paint but I need to learn to remove swirls and other imperfections before I start taking potential customers. I can do a pretty good job by hand though. But, that is time consuming and I consume enough time detailing as it is. Here was my caprice when I first got it after hours of hand buffing.

I used Meguiars Scratch-X, Turtle Wax ICE liquid polish and Meguiars glaze.

About a year ago I bought my Oldsmobile Silhouette van. I had plans to put lettering on the windows and make it a mobile detailing rig. I still hope to use it for that purpose soon.

OK you can start with the 95 in my bay at work.
Anything you do to that will be an improvement.
When you perfect your methods we'll move on Laughing

Master it? Have you ever used it?
You spray a lube (water with a little soap) & rub the clay. DONE
It is amazing & you will think your going to screw up, but you cant (as long as you dont drop it in the dirt)

I have a gallon of simple green concentrate. Think a dilution of that would work? Any idea what a good ratio would be?

Yes 10 parts water 1 part SG. Use a finger nail brush to scrub the "grainy" parts like your arm rest and steering wheel ect.. where dirt builds up.
