After 2 VERY long nights of work we have the impala moving under it's own power.

Pulled the pump out of a parts truck I have, swapped it over to the Impala tranny...a VERY scary job I have never done before, and I got lucky and it worked!

Tomorrow I'm doing a rear end flush and fixing the rear shock bolts that are a little elephanted from my rugged masculinity. After that I'm going to try for a couple hot laps around town.

Tomorrow evening I'm hoping to start mocking up exhaust.

Very exciting stuff!

cheers cheers cheers That's awesome! And the sale price just went up! Laughing

If you have a camera with video capabilities, please make a video soon!

She moves!

After a rear end flush, fixing the shock bolts, putting the brand new chin spoilers on (Thanks to Glen for those bad-boys), and buttoning a few things up, I was able to take it for a rip around the house. No road rips yet, because it was a raining.

Pics to come tomorrow.

A few things to wrap up: fab up exhaust system, intake piping, swap stock seats back in, and get a set of Corvette coil covers to clean up the motor

Boyah!

I know it's not a video, but here is the proof, she drove up on the hill in the yard under her own power. Makes the whole 2 years worth it!

I can't remember the last time my garage felt so clean and empty, it might be time for a mod day!

Last major stuff to do is align the hood, fab exhaust, and make intake, with any luck I will have everything to finish up this weekend!

So I have been on the horn this morning order up what I think will be the last of the pieces I need: exhaust clamps and offsets, intake piping, and fuel rail covers. With any luck that will be the last of it!

Doug

Picked up all the exhaust pieces, hoping to start to assemble tonight and tomorrow night, get it to my welder, and hopefully have for the weekend to assemble... *Fingers crossed*

Today's UPS included 2 little presents that I was very excited to see (Too lazy to take a pic of the other one):

Really hoping to have the exhaust done, intake done (if parts make it in time), and fuel rail covers on.

Also, some hot laps around town!

Pics and video to fallow

Took the old girl for a shakedown run this evening. I don't think the angels have ever sung louder. Nothing intense, I'm still nervous, but put 3 miles on!

-Intake parts never made it in...Had to steal an air filter from a friends car that is in the garage

-Mufflers I was going to use are junk, had to order a set...

-Installing the driver side fuel rail cover was probably the biggest pain in the ass of the whole project. There was a fair amount of trimming needed, but it looks pretty sharp

To do list for tomorrow:
-Find hood latch spring at junkyard
-install rear sway bar
-Install passenger fuel rail cover
-top off all fluids after the shakedown run

Working on pics, can't find the damn cord for the camera.

No pics, gonna be Monday before you get them, camera cord is at the store

Took a nice 10 mile rip, things are coming together nice, however when I got home I found a pretty significant injector leak, got lucky to find it before it got too bad. Seems I have an o-ring not seating in the rail, so we are down till I can get o rings this week

Pics Monday

No pics or video of driving, because as soon as I was about to get the wife to take a video I found the injector leak....pretty major leak, coated the intake and ran down the wiring harness and somehow missed the headers...

I had the whole engine bay assembled with the PITA fuel rail covers installed and everything...just waiting on intake pieces (stole my friend small air cleaner to practice runs) Also have a Gary's Wiring battery harness coming to clean up that alternator wire going across the intake.

Wiper motor had to be flipped, have yet to build jumper harnesses for them...

Wiz wheel as a Dremel... Watch out!

Pic of leak, turned out to be torn injector o-rings...

Suspect o-ring, got all 16 today to replace them all, not sure if you can see it, but the top has a pretty significant piece missing

Pic of the exhaust i mocked up, just needs to be painted and install the last heat shield below the passenger feet, and waiting on mufflers

It feels awesome. Even if I have not gotten to really get after it, just having a couple years into it makes the joy riding worth it.

Time for a little update:
I have been driving the car now for a couple weeks to work, around town, and about every other day or so. I am loving it! Still working out some bugs, but it is way faster than stock, but still pretty tame considering the 5.3 is stock.

A few things I have noticed...

-It revs FAST! This thing is just BEGGING for a turbo... wish I had the cash.

- The exhaust is loud (Dynomax stainless muffs and full length headers), but I put bituthene (Roof under-lament, just like Dynomat) over the whole floor, and it does not drone. It's hard to hear the tires burning though over the exhaust...

-A blown tranny cooler line will DESTROY your day, thankfully I was half a mile from home and it was down hill. Repaired to better-than-new and working great, no tranny damage.

-HIDs are F-ing awesome compared to the stock crap...

-Lastly....DAMN did I missed having a big, bad car!

Few things left to do:
-Wire up the wiper motor, I had to flip it for valve cover clearance, just need to lengthen the wires.
-I need to tighten up my throttle cable, seems to have a little slack.
-NEED to get rid of the BF Goodrich tires...Those things search like crazy. Need to get back to some Nitto 555s
-Tranny shifts funny, since it is a truck tranny and PCM. Need to tune up some shift points and should feel a lot better.

This winter:
-Shes getting a cam, rollers, and springs, fallowed by a dyno tune.
-Get an 07+ water pump (Difference coolant intake) so I can actually hook the cruise control cable up
-Smoked "clear" headlights
-I fear the tranny is eating up too much power, so I am seriously considering a T56 this winter... might need a good rip in a T56 B-body to remind me how nice it would be.

That's it for now, no new pics or video, enjoying driving it too much to bother.

Doug

Once again, just a couple weeks too late! I just sold my rebuilt LS1 T56 a couple weeks ago!

Anything I own is always for sale...just might take a few more bucks to pry the keys from my hands

And how the hell did you not tell me you were selling a T56? DICK!

Nice to see you're keeping it (for now)...maybe that means I will have the chance to sojourn myself to the nearest garage and overlook this Impala's board of fare.

A few things going on with the car lately, finally making some new progress on it.

I replaced all the front steering parts; center link, tie rods, EVERYTHING. Got an alignment and this thing is like driving a brand new one! I still have a set of Bilsteins to install, but I need the shock tool.

The car had always had a bit of a hesitation at low RPM, nothing major, but just enough to annoy me. On a hunch, and since I figured they were still stock from the motor, I replaced the plugs and wires. Boy am I glad I did, what a difference it made, no more hesitation and it feels much smoother. The original plugs were on the driver side, but the passenger side had been replaced (Who does that?) The passenger plugs also had a healthy does of never-seize on them, which after some research can (maybe) cause similar issues to what I was having with the hesitation. (Obviously a plug swap should have been done when I replaced the motor, but you know how it is when you just want to drive the damn thing)

I had a very minor coolant leak that turned out to be a clamp not fully tightened, so that was a nice easy fix.

I am currently running a 2-piece inlet hose from the radiator to the water pump, I am pulling it off tonight to try to find a one-piece that will work at the local parts store. I had no luck last time, but it's constantly nagged on me that there is a potential failure point there, so I am going to try it again. I am also doing a full fluids flush since it has been about 500 or so miles on a used motor, so it seems like a good time to try that hose again.

I guess it's not a lot that I have going on really, but it just feels nice to see some progress and having this thing running near perfect (Id like to bring up the line pressure in the trans).

Next on the list is having perfect power steering lines made, the ones in there work, but they are a little long. I may also use this time to throw in a power steering cooler also.

Now I need to try to get to a club meet!

Doug

P.S. I will work on getting some video too.

I'm glad to hear the plugs cleared things up for you, I need to do my truck. Have the new wires already. I've been told numerous times how much of a difference it makes on the LS engines.

I'd love to see this show up at a meetup!

Here you go guys: http://youtu.be/useX5aOUNvE

Took me long enough huh? Even this is short and lame, but it lets you know she is alive and kicking. She sure loves to rev, definitely needs a turborator...
