Running Lean Empty
PostSubject: Running Lean   Running Lean EmptyFri May 28, 2010 11:14 am

I just installed CIA tri y gen II headers with no cats, RAISS intake with a 3.5 MAF and I can not figure out why I am running lean. I am running lean from both banks so I have searched and searched for vacuum leaks found one on a hose that goes from the front of the intake to the drivers side fixed that and light still came on. I had the PCM programed by PCMFORLESS and they insist it wasnt from them they say they do a ton of tunes like that.
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with them or if I would need a tune with that few mods?
I plan on checking the fuel pressure when i get a chance to grab a gauge but was hoping I could get more ideas of how to fix this on here.
Thanks

ive used both alex at (PCMperformance) and brian (PCMFORLESS) there both excellent. ive had no problems with either one. im sending my spare to be reflashed to brian. because hes worked on it once. so i wont to have to pay for a complete rework. was it running lean before you did all the work? when the guys get off work later today. there help you a lot more then me. im(guessing) Embarassed only its a sensor. keep us posted. ron.

Any chance you can put your old tune in to see if it runs normal again? Odds are very good that it could be Brian's work... Wink

If you open up the breathing as much as you did then you need to get the fuel tables tuned for all of that. That would suggest it's not tuned quite right. At the same time if one of the sensors in the intake or an o2 sensor isn't hooked up right then that would cause the same issue.

I'd check the o2's first and make sure they're connected well and there's nothing burnt up in the wiring. Then I'd check the intake sensors (iat, maf, etc) and make sure they're all plugged in and functioning. Then I'd check again for leaks using the carb cleaner method. Finally I'd look into the tune.

Don't get too frustrated. It's easier to solve these sort of problems with a detective mentality as opposed to being a raging nutcase. I speak from experience Laughing

It wasnt running lean before i did all this work. and I can not put in the old tune cause i sent mine out then they sent it back. PCMFORLESS said it was definetly caused by the breather filter i put in so i reconnected the tube to throttle body but that didnt work

I will go threw everything again tomorow cause i got plenty of time

I searched the code it is throwing and i found something were someone said in rare cases it can be thrown by a unseated dipstick which i would have never thought of cause i didnt realize that that could bring in air but mine is definetly unseated cause after the headers were in i couldnt get it all the way in so i just left it barelly in so i will find a way to get that all the way in but id be suprised if thats it!! has anyone heard of that causing a lean code???

I've heard of weirder issues than that.

If the dipstick isn't in place then air can be sucked into the crankcase which could then over pressurize the pcv and pump a stronger stream of vapor into the intake. Remember that the pcv system enters after the maf so the system can't compinsate for the increase in airflow since it doesn't see an increase at the maf. Hence a lean condition would be picked up at the plugs and at the o2's while the maf reads everything being normal. The question is why would your engine be pulling that much vacuum through the crankcase scratch

if your not running cats then you need to get the PCM reprogrammed at a high performance shop

i just sent it out today so i should have it by mid next week and they said they did not tune it for the bigger MAF which clearly was stated in the form i filled out so they just didnt look at the form closely. so thats definetly what threw the code but i will have it in next week then i will be 100% sure i will let u know when i put it in.
lean was the only codes that were coming up so they did tune it correctly for the air egr and cats removal

what is your fuel pressure ? you need about 43.5 lb with the vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator pluged

I am going to stick my nose in and say you have too much air coming in, and not enough fuel to match. The 3.5 maf is probably the culprit I have been using PCMperformance.com since they started and all three of my tunes have been spot on for what I asked for. I have never read anything negative about their work. But I have read that pcmforless has had more than it's share of bad tunes as of late for some reason.

my fuel pressure is far to low changed fuel filter jumped up a bit to 38-39 light takes longer to come on now but still comes on when remove the vacuum line it jumps to about 42ish.
im not to familiar with this but cause its only at 42 with the vacuum off means it would be the pump and not the regulator correct?
i have a freeze frame scaner and the light always seems to come on at very low rpms
