| Now what! My tranny line (the upper one that goes into the radiator on top) apparently rotted through in three places at once a few days ago, noticed the stains under the car, then investigated tonight after I got the car back from my dad who had borrowed it. The line is seeping fluid in a few spots and it's getting all over my exh. system as I drive the car. Still has a decent fluid level but I'm not gonna drive it. Anyone know the best place to get a line? Is this a PITA to do myself or should I just have someone put it in? lol | |

| RMS has the line(s), possibly Napa auto parts if you don't want to wait for delivery. | |

| Tranny cooler? Or does it use the Radiator? Mine rotted out where is passed the radiator to go to the cooler. I just went to napa, got some line, and made my own. Pretty simple. | |

| Thanks for the replies guys - I was actually looking at the ones RMS has, but it didn't say what years they fit and I'm not sure the LT1 cars used the same parts as the TBI cars?
My car just has the standard lines that go into the radiator and back out, no ext. cooler.
I'll try to figure out what the P/N is and see if RMS does in fact have those

| I'd cut the lines at both ends right at the point where you get good metal (leaving about 3" or so of line stiill remaining at each fitting if you have to go to the extreme). Then run some of the rubber hose that's rated for trans coolers along with some heavy duty clamps. Just go into a parts store and look for the hose that they sell to go with aftermarket trans coolers. Then just make sure you route the lines away from heat sources or areas where they will rub excessively. I've done it this way on a few cars and never once had any problems. | |

| Believe it or not, I'm with Brad on this one. Just cut it to good metal and run some rubber hose. Flare the ends a bit if you can so the line has less chance of blowing out. Plan on doing the lines (once you get them) at the next mod day. Someone'll give you a hand. | |

I was thinking of doing that, but I didn't know how to flare the line out. Do I need to get a couple special tools to cut the line (maybe one of those little pipe cutters for plumbing) and to flare it?
I called a guy I know to see about having the line just done so I wouldn't need to think about it, might have it done Monday, but I'm considering this. However, the line is bad for about 3 feet of the hard line. Probably from about 3" below the first turndown out of the radiator, then all the way down the the next turn and then all the way back under the engine is rotted. It's bad. So I'm afraid to actually use a rubber hose for something with that many turns...

| Those turns don't mean anything to you. They are bent like that to clear everything since the metal line doesn't bend or flex. You just cut to clean metal on both end with a small tubing cutter and then run enough hose to reach, with enough slack to be able to tie it up out of the way of everything. It's not as complicated as you think it is. | |

Easy job, cut out the bad with a little pipe cutter, put in the new. Form it so there are no kinks, tie wrap it so it won't move. Like Bill says, flare it if you can, but if you can't don't worry about. Make sure you slide the hose over the pipe about 3" and double clamp it. Check tranny fluid. Done!

| I'm going to try this tomorrow when it's nicer out, I'll check AZ and Advance for the hose, then go to NAPA if they don't have it.
I'll post pictures when it's done!

| Pinhole The hole was about 5" below the cut right here behind the radiator... I cut it down under the harmonic balancer just to get as much of the crappy area of the line out as I could, it looks like the other one was replaced (partially) at some point with new line. Got some 3/8" hose, had to return it because it was a too big, apparently the car is 5/16". Bought a cheap flaring tool at Lowe's, but it was useless because I couldn't get it in where I needed to do it. I considered doing the whole line with rubber hose back to the tranny since I bought enough, but it looked like a PITA trying to use my tubing cutter back there since the lines are right next to each other, and I didn't feel like removing anything that might start leaking. Hopefully this holds up, I cleaned everything off and nothing has leaked yet, I left about 3" of metal line inside the hose at the top and bottom. Thanks for the idea you guys! | |

| Just remember when you do oil changes to check the line for signs of rubbing and make sure the clamp is still tight and not corroding too fast on you. If you keep tabs on it every once and a while you'll be able to catch any issues before they become big problems.
On a side note you can zip-tie the rubber line to the original hard line running next to it so that you'll know that it's clear of the pulleys and such.

It was pretty tight as it was (I did leave slack though so it wouldn't be stressed) but I did put a zip tie on there onto that other hard line right after I took the pics.
