| Snow chains add about an inch to the overall width of the tire. For the wheel to come off of the car it needs to come far enough from the hub to clear the studs. Once you pull the wheel out that far with the added width of the chains you start to hit the inside of the wheel well. So for the sake of speed and ease they narrowed the rear to allow greater clearence for changing the wheels out. Since these cars have plenty of room on the backside of the wheel it's really not an issue to decrease the track width on the rear.
Unless your buying aftermarket wheels and need to figure out backspacing, or are buying new axles, it's really not anything to even think about. | |
