| Every year, my wife and I plan on doing some home improvements. We sit down after Christmas, and decide what the up coming year will be. Last year we were unable to do anything because of time, other obligations, and my exteded vacation. This is the year of the lawn at the McKay residence. My lawn has gone down hill every year to the point it is no longer lawn. The two major killers is weeds, and salt/sand from the road. I have tried weed killer, grass seed. You name it. But the weeds still win, as does the sand near the road. Any advice on bringing it back to life would be great. On a side note, Bill C, is that vinyl siding I see on your house in your sig pic? I could swear I just don't remember seeing it the last time I was there. Was the pic taked during instalation? As the side looks unfinished. Either way, looks awsome. |

| My house is falling apart, i'm a horrible house keeper, it never ends. Next week they start on the second half of my roof, guy started it 2 years ago, did a nice job, but took him a week to do one side. so i hired another guy. I'll be glad when its done. 1000 bucks later. | |

| Good thread, Billy. I wish I could help you out with lawn tips, but I suck at it. I've been trying for 2 years (on my 3rd) with overseeding, fertilizing, etc my lawn to no avail. Been using all name brand, Scotts materials. I still have brown spots and weak spots and thin spots and places where it won't even grow. *sigh* I either have to till it all and re-sod it or call tru-green or someone. So good luck with yours! And good eye on siding. We're about 3/4 of the way through doing it. Should look nice when it's done. I also have to replace a couple sections of stockade fence, build a swingset, build a shed, and insulate and sheetrock the garage. And I really want to get that all done before summertime. You guys busy between now and then? | |

| Bill M maybe put some bricks at the edge of your lawn to protect from the salt/sand? | |

1000 bucks later. Are you kidding me?! That's cheap. I got an estimate from $5-7000 to do mine. So I tackled it myself with the help of my Brother for less than $500, for the one side facing South. That was Nine yrs ago and I had to replace about 10% of the boards due to a fire before I bought the house. North side is overdue a couple years, got to get on it this Summer.

| You guys will see my never ending project next weekend, been a year this month since I started working the land and today Laura and I got about 65% of the yard ready to seed tomorrow! There is still some siding on the outside to finish and some trim in the apartment. Then there is about a million things I would like to do in the garage, but those will take time and money I don't have right now. Billy(s), about the lawn, when it gets to the point where nothing else is working you have to start over. Loam spread out about an inch thick, raked out, seeded, lightly raked over to lightly cover the seed, and covered in hay. Water daily (this is the most important part). I make lawns happen where they shouldn't be for a living. Doug | |

+1 if your starting over. But plenty of starter fertilizer & forget the hay, just keep it wet. All grass needs to flourish is fertilizer & water. Few actually use both frequently enough for real results. You CAN become a slave to your lawn, DONT do it The other thing NOT to do is roto-tilling. Unless you have a very small lawn, you WILL curse the day you thought of tilling. You'll end up raking 3tons of rock & grass remains then wheelbarrowing it somewhere at the expense of every muscle in your body. Yes....I am experienced. Next time (if ever) it's heavy equipment FTW.
