...One that actually looks like something that would be on the forum too... Laughing

With my truck out of commission I REALLY needed something I could drive right away so I could store the 74 and then have a little pressure taken off on getting the rear end in the truck fixed.

Car is a 93 Caprice Classic, 57,000 miles on it, white with blue cloth interior. Power everything except seats. 305 TBI. I was hoping it would be an LTZ, but whatever, it's a nice car! I was actually surprised that it went decently getting onto the highway, wasn't a slowpoke...

I drove the car, it goes damn near perfect. Brakes are excellent, has a new exhaust system from tailpipe to the engine incl. cat and resonator, runs nice and smooth, no hiccups, was well maintained, clean oil and trans fluid as well as coolant, inside is real nice with no damage anyplace.
The only problems I could find are the left turn signal won't cancel after you take the turn, driver's door hinge squeaks and needs some silicone or something, needs a bulb in the trunk and underhood lamps, and the car is all filthy on the outside with tree goo. When I first saw it I almost didn't have high hopes, but I was wrong.
The tires are whitewalls and since the car hasn't been driven much lately, they've bled all over the black part of the tires. I'll take a better look at them and see if they need to be replaced or just cleaned up. It really did drive fine on 495 at 80 MPH. Super smooth.

The e-brake wouldn't stay down when I first stepped on it, so I pulled on the release then tried it and it worked fine. Weird.

The underside has some surface rust but not bad, I can get it off with a wire wheel and then I'm going to paint the frame rails with black rustoleum then undercoat them. The trunk doesn't smell musty so I doubt there's water going in.
There is a small blister on the bottom rear of the pass. qtr panel, but it doesn't seem to be the trademark rear quarter rot these things get up toward that corner, it's back further and seems to have been a rock chip that rusted. I'll grind that down and paint it, the car is white so it'll match easy.

I'm not going to do much at all to this car other than clean it up, drive it and keep it maintained, but I might toss some Impala SS wheels we have sitting here on the back porch on the car if I find some center caps, or a set of steel 9c1 wheels with rings and centers, and I'd like to put a white Impala SS grille on there. Probably wait on any of that stuff though...I have other stuff on my plate at the moment.

The car was owned by an old lady who recently went to a nursing home. She was from RI and her son was selling it, who is a 50ish year old guy who works for Raytheon I believe. I guess one of his relatives who "is 80 years old" drove this car once a week for now so it wouldn't go to rack and ruin.

I'm picking it up in the morning, I'll post pics after I wash it. I think I'm excited!

I know a guy with a full blue leather (power) interior that would work in that car.

I heard he's got some sweet wheels that would work too. I think there might be an Impala Grille in his garage too.

I've got the spring you need to fix the uncancelling turn signal also. Had the same problem and never bothered tryna fix it.

Sweet ride brah!

I love this friggin' thing! Laughing

Still no pics, unfortunately. I meant to take before shots, but I forgot my camera, then went right to a car wash to blast the tree sap off. It was EVERYWHERE, every seam on the car was full of maple tree gunk and helicopter seed pod things, up under the bumpers to the roof of the car, down the belt moldings...the inner side of the door mirrors near the glass and other areas had green mold growing on them. I presoaked, then scrubbed with the brush, then had to put the wand about 3 inches away from some spots to get it off the car, I spent 18 bucks in change at the car wash. The car is white and of the era of that bad GM primer, and I did notice that in one of the roof seams at the C-pillar it's starting to peel, but I think it will be ok if I just touch it up for now, it's not onto the roof panel yet or the C pillar or anything, just down in the seam.

Anyway, the car is excellent. I cleaned, scrubbed, and detailed the interior which looked like ass on wheels. The dash had 1/8" of gunk and dust on it, the carpet looked like it was bombarded with spilled coffee, and the seats had a couple of stains. Just about everything cleaned out, and even though I don't like to use it, I put some Armor All wipes on the dash pad because it was all chalky and faded. Looks fine now.

Car goes great down the road, I've been driving it all day, from Westford to Salem to Malden to Saugus then to Beverly then Peabody and Salem again...now I'm home. Haven't had any mech. problems, tracks straight, blah blah.
The rear tires are junk, it was skidding at every stop light I pulled away from, yet I had no problem in the snow if I was easy on the pedal, I kept finding myself doing 60 on the highway in near blizzard conditions.

If the weather is nice tomorrow I'll clean it again and take pictures, even though I cleaned 99 percent of the car off today, it started to rain and I didn't have time to finish. I HAD to get that dirt off, it looked so nasty!

Oh, the rot is a little worse than I thought on the quarters, but whatever. The pass side has a small hole halfway between the end of the car and the rear wheel arch, and the driver's side is doing the same thing but is in the beginning stages. I'll have to figure something out about that problem.

Inside the car I found about 6 ice scrapers, a pair of green carpet samples, a roll of scotch tape, notes on how to use controls in the car written on index cards, and this:

That thing has to be about 30-40 years old! Laughing

I went to replace the bulb for the trunk but found it was messed up in some way, I think a wire got chopped by the trunklid hinge, which happened in my yellow Impala as well. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

I like the hubcaps, too. Very Happy

Thanks man!
I like that trim too since it's color matched. Regardless it wouldn't have been a sticking point, I got a smokin' deal on the car so it could have been pink for all I care...actually wait, no that would have been a problem actually.

I'm decoding the SPI label right now. I was in a restaurant earlier and a cop in uniform said he liked the car... Laughing

Still not really planning to mess with it too much other than try to do something about those rust spots and maintain it, but here's a general idea of how it'd look with an SS grille and wheels...

Hey, do you think those wheels/tires you have from the LTZ would hold up in the snow?

No. In fact I know they won't. The rear are too fat.

I have that other set though with the 235/70/15's that'd be much better.

I pulled the trim off of mine since it was starting to fall off anyway. The front looks fine as the bumper chrome blends into the wheelwell trim, but the rear looks funky cause it just stops at the edge of the bumper. I'd recommend keeping it on unless you decide to do smoothies.

Yup! Wasn't expecting to find something this nice.

Yeah, I like the 95 mirrors better, but can't complain, it's amazing to have power mirrors that work! Rear Defog too! I think the A/C even works in this car. All the modern conveniences...I wonder what the poor people are doing! Oh wait, they're buying white 93 Caprices from craigslist. Laughing

I just tried to set the parking brake when I put it away, and it's sticking again like when I tested the car out. I can push the pedal all the way down but it bounces right back up again and won't stay locked.
That time first time, I pulled on the release handle, then it worked. Must be something with the release handle because it seems like the cables under the car are moving and stuff when I push the pedal.

Heh, I know, I've seen that happen before too!
I fixed it, there is a short cable running from the T handle to the parking brake pedal mechanism that releases the pedal...that short cable is frayed at the connection and binds up a bit when it goes back into the sheath. I'm going to try and take the one out of my brother's 89 and swap them because it appears to be the same, but the one in the 93 works now...lubed it up.

I was looking through that kit, it almost appears as if it were never opened. That tube of antibacterial ointment is so old it's all dried up inside.

I got a set of Dunlop SP60s in 215/75/15 put on (with the whitewalls facing out) and after feeling like I was going to die driving in the 6" of snow this morning where I had to work, the difference with the new tires is night and day. The rear tires on this car were from 1995 apparently. I had to drive up from Malden to N. Andover up Route 114, down my way it was mostly rain, as soon as I got through Middleton the snow was NUTS and the traffic was going about 4MPH. The car was fishtailing up hills and I thought I wasn't going to make it. So glad to have gotten the new ones on now.

These tires are AMAZING. I already highly recommend them...driving in the rain feels almost like dry pavement with these, and they're not even that wide. The tread is pretty deep and they look like they'll be great in the snow.

NOW be EXTREMELY careful on the dry roads because with those skinny little bastards you'll go sideways in a heartbeat
I wasnt happy with Crovo pointing out old school snows in the front were a mistake
but after mounting & running them yesterday (in that Middleton type snow) & today
in the dry, I wasnt as disappointed as I thought I'd be
No big deal, once the snows are on I only drive the Impala like a Caprice anyway

Finally got the car inspected yesterday, passed with flying colors! Before I went to get a sticker, I had to temporarily remove the trunk drainage mod because I was afraid they'd give me the third degree over it...

This car only came with one set of keys, which is kinda crappy. However, when I pulled the panel back in the trunk to survey the damage, look what was down there right next to the hole I pushed my finger through earlier:

Has it's share of scratches and paint swirls but it looks nice when you put some effort into it. I think it will look awesome in the spring after some passes with a rotary polisher.

So far what I've got to address:

-The hole in the quarter, there is one JUST starting on the driver's side but it's currently not even bubbles, it's gotta be cut out though.

-Cruise control doesn't work. The brake lights work, including the CHMSL, so I don't think it's the brake switch. If I turn the cruise on, then put the switch all the way over to the right where ACCEL is and hold it, the car accelerates, but it won't hold a speed.

-That left turn signal that won't cancel. Maybe related to the cruise problem.

-The back window and windshield are scratched to hell and the hood, roof and trunk have bad paint swirls in them. I think that this car was constantly covered with pine and maple sap, and someone was using a harsh brush to get it off the car. You can see where there were blobs in the paint they damn near scraped off and ruined the surrounding paint. I can get a free windshield, and possibly a back window if they are chipped or broken. Twisted Evil

-I want to replace the grille, I wanted an SS piece but I think now maybe I should just replace the original with the same but nicer.

-Gotta look into that noisy blower motor, it's driving me insane!

I have an SS grille that I got from Billy that I may not end up using. If you change your mind about swapping to the ss style let me know.

So I had my first setback today- the alternator went!

Since I got used to the car I noticed the whir of the alternator was a little weird, like a spaceship. I also could have sworn I'd seen the headlights flicker from time to time for a blip of a nanosecond. I thought it may have been the drain from the AC compressor cycling, but this was when the car was driving.

Today I was in line at the car wash and noticed the the battery idiot light was on, and the whir of the alternator was absent. I went home quick to yank the old one (10 minutes) and bought a new (not reman.) one at Advance with a lifetime warranty on it after my dad gave me a ride, then slapped it in the car. Quickest alternator I ever changed before, that's for sure.

So now I'm into this car with new tires and an alternator now, I hope nothing else serious goes wrong... Shocked

Thanks guys!

As far as the centercaps go, I was about to drive up to Hollands and look for Venture caps. I stopped in this place in Malden called Spadaforas that always seems to have the part you need but actually has like 10 cars in the whole junkyard. Laughing The guy was like "Yah I gut a Olds Silllawette minivan out theyah, but s'not a Chevy...so...but I do gutta'n Impala..."

It was one of the 2000ish Wimpalas with the 16" wheels that looked like SS wheels. They were kinda messed up, one had been scuffed in a light impact with another car's tire so it had a rubber scrape on it, etc. But I took one out to my car and surprisingly it fit! Apparently they're the same part, but with a bowtie on a gray checkerboard pattern. I went back and grabbed the other 3, the guy wanted 30 bucks so I offered 25 making note of their crappy condition, I just wanted some caps quick since I had none. They actually cleaned up nice with Simple Green, a gentle scouring pad, and my fingernail. Very Happy I think they look awesome!

Has anyone else used these? I never saw mention of them in a search on ISSF, am I some sort of a pioneer?

Laughing

I don't know what to do about that, lol. I got a lot of compliments at a BBQ on this car, and a lot of them were "I like the grille" so....

I wanted to paint it white with the mesh still black but it seems like it would be a pain. I'm afraid of the white paint chipping and showing black underneath, the other one I did actually got chipped a lot so I just took it off. It still looks okay, I'm going to touch that one up then put a few coats of clear over it all.

I might just repair the broken stud on the back of this one with a piece of threaded rod and some JB weld, then polish the black paint and leave it...but I haven't decided.

Alot of people use those caps when putting ss wheels on Caprices. Suprisingly GM used alot of caps that will snap right into ss wheels. And someone found out once that mustang caps fit those wheels too Laughing
