PostSubject: Lets talk cams   Sat Feb 20, 2010 8:12 am

When and if I do the conversion from my car to Brad's car, I am not going to use the engine out of the SS. It has way too many miles to justify using. I still have a complete 87k engine that just needs a crank, as it lost a rod bearing that put the crank in fubar state.

What I want to know, is what is a good cam, who makes it and how much would I expect to pay? I woill be doing the 1.6 rockers and beehive springs as well.
I keep hearing about an 845 cam. Who makes it? What about the Hot cam? My plan would be to make a solid 350hp at the flexplate. Am I in the ball park? I will have some mild headwork performed, gasket matching both intake and exhaust, and smoothing ports out. Back in my Furd days, I would have used a ford motorsport cam with J-302 heads to get to that 350hp mark.

No doubt in my mind that I personally would go with the hotcam. Everyone always says that there are a lot better cams but with the right drivetrain setup it is very hard to beat. We're talking at least 4.10s and a 3000 stall but I have no doubt you'll see 325 rwhp, especially with ported heads.

But I'm guessing you don't want that radical of a setup though? Question

Billy you would be better off spending more time in the bowl area around the valve guide and the short side radius.the port near the push rods are very thin ask me how I know affraid
I hope you hot tank that block all the metal ends up in the oil galleys

Talk to Lloyd Elliot and tell him your mods and have him suggest a cam.

I have the GM 846. I don't like it, but it meets your goals. You can have it for $150. It's a little light in the bottom end but pulls like a freight train above 3 grand. If you're staying 4L60, some stall would really help it out. Smile I'm going to get one from Lloyd. Smile

I might be interested. Is this the cam in your ss now?

Bobby, I saw the pics of the head work. I have done some headwork in the past on Ford heads. But just gasket matching, and smoothing the ports, and bowl area. No major stuff.
