Why does the temp in my Caprice run just below the orange on the temp gauge. It doesn't smell or feel hot. Could the gauge be reading wrong??? Anyone else have this problem? Question Question

Not positive but i think civi caprice gauge is inaccurate .I beleive the fix is to install sensor from 9c1.

A civi guage should always read either 3/4 or off. If it actually fluctuates then it's either got a 9c1 sender and the resistor removed, or there's a cross supplying volts through the sender wire.

This is the first I have heard of this civi and 9c1 temp guage. I think you guys are talking about the oil pressure. There is a difference. The civi sits at a predetermined location, while the 9c1 guage will fluctuate based on pressure.
The oil pressure sender is the difference, and a diode or something has to be added. Billy C. can give you the particulars.

Are you sure there's no air in the system and it's running at a normal temp? If so, I'd try replacing the sensor located in the passenger head, between 6 & 8. Smile

Sorry bout that. Billys right on the oil pressure guage. I forgot you were talking about the temp by the time I started writing Laughing

One possability is that the heat shield isn't fully covering the sensor in the head and it's getting a false high reading. I don't know how accurite that guess is but I wouldn't rule out anything on one of these cars.

At one point my guage would read abnormally high for no reason and then drop back down to normal for no reason, that was a week before the thermostat blew and snapped shut.

Of course you also have to take into account that the fans don't come on until the guage just about pegs the danger zone on the guage. I keep thinking my car is about to overheat and then I hear the fans come on and the guage plumets.

How long have you been having this problem? Does it just go there and stay there? Has the cooling system been altered or worked on lately?

It doesn't seem to be too hot. It's something I've noticed since I got the car. The radiator has been replaced but it might need a thermostat also. I'll keep an eye on it next time I'm on a ride and watch it more closely. I'll also check the heat shield to make sure it's not giving me a false reading from exhaust heat. Thanks, guys. Surprised

I think you will find it will get hotter at idle rather than driving.

You can program the fans to come on a bit earlier.

There is one thing I noticed on the car. There is a replacement radiator in it that does not have the overflow nipple on it . The tube on the overlow tank is plugged off with a bolt. Also I did the throttle body bypass on it last summer. Rolling Eyes

I never trusted the plugged overflow setup. I did it on mine for a couple months after replacing the radiator and then finally just replaced the overflow with one from a later '95 to eliminate the unused nipple all together. I always suspected it would lead to pressure issues at some point.

The later 95-96 models eliminated the hose from the overflow to the radiator. So many aftermarket radiators do not have provisions for it. You would just have to block off the nipple on the overflow tank.

Just to let everyone know, I replaced my thermostat today after my cappy got pretty hot on a trip to VT this weekend. Fixed the problem, now it runs about half way up on the gauge. Thanks for all of your input. What a Face
