3.08 swap to 3.42 Empty
PostSubject: 3.08 swap to 3.42   3.08 swap to 3.42 EmptySat Dec 19, 2009 4:48 am

Help me see the light at the end of the tunnel full of bull sh$t. I'm going to be doing a rear end swap in my '96 9C1 with a set of 3.08's. I've found a '94 9C1 parts car with a rear that has 3.42's. correct me if I'm wrong, but wont I get worse gas mileage with the 3.42's? But the response from the gas peddle will be better in the city and help me forget about my wallet? I'm not sure if I should swap it in temporarally(to have the 3.08 rebuilt) or keep it in and not swap it back out once (dwindling)funds rebuild the 3.08's in the spring. Discuss...

Just swap rearends if you can. 3.42S are going to hurt fuel milage, because with them in place, you are going to be on the go pedal alot more. Go for it, or wait it out for some 3.73s.

It's a good thing my '96 isnt going to be my daily driver then, given the 3.42's. The speedo is gonna be all messed up, so my GPS will have to substitute.

Screw those wussy gears! Go 4.10's!!! Very Happy

(yeah, I know, the 3.42's are free. Wink just swap in the whole rear. Either I or a few others could fix your speedo with a lappy)

The higher the number the higher the rpm's when cruising on the highway. That makes for worse mileage and more wear on the drivetrain. For around town your mileage may not change that much since the car is getting more "off the line" ability which translates into less power needed to move from a stop.

And I'd suggest getting a tune done at some point to take full advantage of the changes being done.

And don't forget that when you swap gears out from the housing you need to swap in a new abs reluctor to match the gears. That's one reason why it's easier to swap entire rear-ends.

Thats what I'm doing. Swapping the entire rear end. Nothing comes for free. $600 for the whole pile with an LT1(already sold)/with tranny(sold) and I had to come up with 4 wheels and tires. But I guess I will stick with the the whole swap then, and meet up with someone to program it!

IIRC before the crash there were a few people on that other forum that went with 3.73s and city mileage improved.

I will have to read up on some of that. My Monte Carlo SS has 3.73's, but that car gets terrible gas mileage as it is...

Bill hit the nail on the head here^^
Around the city your going to see better mileage IF you stay off the pedal
High RPM will eat more fuel
